Seasons in Order of Best to Worst

Hi everybody,

I'm about to get started with this show and with it in mind that it resets every season, how would you rank the seasons from best to worst? I appreciate the opinions. I'm going to get caught up on the current season, but in binging one or two of the other seasons I figure that I may as well start with the best if there is some consensus to it.

I really liked the back half of season 1, there's a twist a lot of people didn't like but I thought it made it interesting.

  • Thanks @bizmarkiefader. The idea of an asylum setting sounded interesting to me. Just based on the title I think that one that intrigued me the most. Thanks a lot for chiming in.

    Asylum, Coven, Murder House, Freakshow

Murder House was scarier than Coven but Coven had so many more fun moments and memorable characters. (It also had a lot more of Lily Rabe, who was sorely missed last year.)

Wow @Dee Coven is dead last? Why didn't you like it? Even worse than Freakshow?

@Frakkin T I just thought Coven was even more of a mess than the usual mess I'm willing to tolerate with this show. The kept making it clear at the start that Sarah Paulson couldn't possibly be the Supreme and then after all the others went through the hoops, oh look - she's the Supreme! That and the sickening amount of torture porn put me off. Also Emma Roberts.

That's too bad. I assumed the whole way through that Sarah Paulson was going to be the supreme just because it was both the most obvious and least obvious option. Emma Roberts does one thing very well, and that's selfish brat/queen of fucking everything. Coven gave her the chance to do that, and even one memorable monologue right after she came back from the dead that allowed her to show a little range. (Have you seen her in Scream Queens? Same role, but even better.)

  • Murder House. I actually couldn't finish any of the other seasons. I started and fell off at different points. Murder House was awesome and had some real great twists.

  • Murder House (season 1) is the only one I liked enough to watch all the way through. I really liked it a lot too.

Loved Asylum, Murder House and Coven...they are all 3 different.  I have not seen Freak Show yet.

I just recently got into this show after watching the first episode of Hotel.  I tried to watch Freakshow when it was airing (I caught the episode where the clown kills the boyfriend while he was out having a picnic with his girlfriend, and then caught and caged her).  Clowns freak me the hell out, so that was a deal breaker for me last season.  But I did go back and binge watch Murder House and Asylum last weekend, and really liked both.  I'm eager to watch Coven this weekend.  So far, based on my limited viewership, I have a feeling my ranking will be:

Hotel (I *love* this season so far, and we're only 2 eps. in)
Coven (I am super intrigued by the Salem Witch stuff, and it's in my ancestry, so it ranks second for me and I haven't watched it yet)
    Murder House
    Asylum
Freakshow (I don't even know if I will watch it but regardless, based on my fear of murderous clowns, it ranks dead last)

Halfway through Coven, and my ranking has changed.  In my opinion, it's not as good as I thought it would be.  I'm actually giving up on the rest of the season and am going to start Freakshow.  So, my new ranking is:

    Hotel
    Murder House
    Asylum
    Freakshow
    Coven

    Best to worst for me:
Hotel, Coven, Murder House, Freak Show, Asylum.

I couldn't stay interested in Asylum, though I really liked the setting concept. Freak Show was kind of iffy for me, and I hated every second of the musical bits, but some of the characters, like Dandy, Twisty, and Mordrake were really awesome. Murder House was classic. Coven had a really awesome setting, I liked the idea of the house of witches, and I thought all the characters were awesome, with one exception. I also thought both Denis o'Hare and Evan Peters had great characters, and I loved how Jessica Lange transformed him from his troubled Frankenstein's monster into the loyal brutal guard dog. My favorite character was Lily Rabe's woods witch, and I was really disappointed that she suffered a fate I didn't think she deserved.

Two episodes in, the darker, more horrific aspects of Hotel have already made this the best season for me. JPM already seems awesome, and I think this will be Peters' best role yet.

  • Best to worst: Murder House, Coven, Freak Show, Asylum.

I don't want to include Hotel yet without having seen the whole season. It's funny how Asylum is almost everyone's favorite, but I hated, HATED the alien theme, as well as the "nosy journalist gets into trouble" cliché.
I'm undecided about Hotel so far, some of the characters I really like, while others I can't stand, so we'll just have to see how the story plays out.

  • I'm in the minority but my favorite is hands down Coven. I think the combination of high camp and highly stylized production is why.

My order would be Coven, Asylum, Murder House, Freak Show.

Asylum is usually considered the best season, but I found the Dr. Arden's techniques (shock therapy, etc) hard to watch. But maybe that's the point?

Murder House is a good initial season but it doesn't have the AHS style yet.

Jury's still out on Hotel, but I'm fairly certain it can't get worse than Freak Show. That went so wrong from Twisty's death on.
