This excellent video on the visual style of The Wire may add fuel to the format debate

I especially love all the carefully composed shots of frames within frames. They not only create a sense of voyeurism, but the repeated motif of squares within squares often calls to mind the chess game metaphor, and also how the characters feel boxed in. Of course I'll check out the HD version, but I would much rather view it in the format for which it was framed.

Spoiler warning: this video contains scenes from all seasons of The Wire. It also includes a scene from Breaking Bad Season 2 and The Sopranos Season 3.
