I don't know about all that. It wasn't just the ufo, which was cool but on the ridiculous end of bizarre. It was the weird pulp fiction freeze frames and the narrative device of being a documentary based on a true crime collection, and how dumb the Dakota cops were. I need to sleep on it, but my "instant take" is that was a mess, and tried to come it a bit too high at clever, and failing. The season has been really good, great even, but this felt like a stumble. Am I crazy?

Well holy shit. I can see some people thinking Fargo just jumped the shark with the UFO, but they've been constantly reminding us that it's part of this story. Remember that we wouldn't even have the "massacre at Sioux Falls" if Rye didn't get distracted by the UFO and then hit by Peggy. My jaw was on the floor for the final ten minutes ( again ) and that's what I look for in TV. And Martin Freeman narrating this episode was such a nice touch.

  • The ufos are in cahoots with Kansas City. First Rye, then Bear, maybe even used Peggy and Ed to do their dirty work with Dodd... The plot thickens, can't wait for next Monday.

Don't let your Leftovers high get you down on this episode @A_Ron_Hubbard

It was a little clunky at times but I thought this was an incredible hour of television. This show makes up for that clunkyness with STYLE. I originally thought that I would call bullshit on an alien spaceship showing up, but my instant take is that I loved it. I do hope we get more explanation on Hanzee's motives.

And concerning Hanzee, i cant help but think that the aliens have something to do with his motives to kill the Gerhardts. There's the obvious oppression and general racisim that he's endured but WE KNOW that he had an interaction with the flying saucer outside the Waffle Hut and that 2 hours passed by while he was squatting in the road. Maybe he really did get abducted and whatever he saw or found out during those 2 hours gave him cause to take out the Gerhardts.

But it does give me a weird feeling because his story is so human and personal. He's just "tired of this life". So if it turns out that Hanzee has been enlisted by these aliens to become a one man human killing machine then I guess I'll be kinda disappointed.

God I love this show!! I've been curious as to how much of the alien stuff they we're gonna do and man did they nail it. I kinda wish they didn't have the Ed and Peggy exchange about the ufo, but I really can't argue cause that Peggy line was just perfect. I have enjoyed this season so much can't wait for the finale.

  • I liked it. The UFO surprisingly didn't really bother me. Just a week or two back, A Ron said he was so engrossed, he would buy it if Mike Milligan and the Kitchen brother popped off their human heads and revealed themselves to be aliens. I thought, "uh, no." Now A Ron isn't so sure, and I'm cool with it, lol.

The freeze frames seemed in line with the split screens and other seventies movie devices this season has used. I'm cool with that, too.

    Good week of television.

Yeah, you never know how something is going to strike you until it does. I thought I was ready for anything... I was so engrossed (which was a struggle, with all of the choices made here) with the fates of Hank and Lou, and how gritty all the action was, they I fucking forgot that this version of fargo has aliens in it, and it was so jarring and had such a big impact in the plot and lasted so long that I couldn't handle it.

My problem with the aliens is this... How does/will it effect the characters?

I mean, I guess Carradine plays a good grizzled old kinda world weary Mike Ehrmantraut style guy, but do you really think that that performance portrays the level of fucked up Lou must be from staring down the barrel of a no-shit alien spacecraft?

I dunno... I feel like this takes away from season 1. The more I'm sitting on it the more I'm feeling worse about it.

Don't get me wrong I was HYPED when the spaceship showed up, but I'll have to rewatch tomorrow.

I just don't know what the aliens add to the story...

Ah enough with my bitching. What was really affecting was Betsy collapsing, and Hank taking one in the line of duty, and Lou continuing to be a cross between Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas in Falling Down, if that combination had been raised on Lake Woebegone. The pacing was excellent. The music was righteous. Is Betsy dead? Is Hank? Can molly really lose her mother and grandfather in the same day?

I think Betsy is dead or on death's door. I dunno about Hank. It's a toss up really.

Lou is such a lovable badass. I have a massive man crush on him.

The music has been great since season 1. The subtle bell ringing, the Numbers & Wrench theme... but this season has kicked it up a notch with all the lisenced music and original themes intertwined with the stylistic shots and split screens. It's really interesting. Like i said at the top of the thread, this show has STYLE.

For a show that's already hitting out of the park sountrack wise, I was blown away that they went with a Cymande track. For those who liked the mid-episode build up music, do yourself a favor and pick up Cymande's self titled album. You won't regret it.

If they manage to throw this track somewhere in before the season is done, I'll call it the one of the G.O.A.T. television sountracks:

  • I'm just not feeling the aliens. I was fine when there was allusions to aliens, but full blown spaceship and beams of light aliens that stop Bear? This was a good episode for me, even when the massacre turned into stills from a comic book, right up to when the aliens showed up. That flat out ruined it for me. Why not have some writing on the spaceship that actually says "deus ex machina". That kind of 4th wall breaking might have even saved this episode.

  • I wonder if the narration was added just to make Hanzee's motivations more clear. I personally didn't understand why Hanzee gave a shit about Ed & Peggy until the voice of Martin Freeman (?) explained it.

Unsure about this episode, but the main thing i'm wondering is what's going to happen in the finale... did Mike Milligan and the Kitchen brother just nope out of there completely or are we gonna see them again? A finale of Lou chasing Hanzee chasing Ed and Peggy seems kinda anticlimactic after the whole season has revolved around the Gerhardts.

Oh.. and did Bear survive a shot to the side of the head, or was it in the shoulder? On my crappy laptop it looked like a headshot
  • DeeDee Adelaide
So that was the massacre, right? There can't be yet another one - there are no Gerhardts left.

    That was bonkers.
    UnderwoodElisa
  • @Clareto, I thought it was a headshot on my 42" plasma at first. Haven't rewatched it, but I assume it wasn't--maybe just his ear got shot off or something.

As far as the UFO goes, I think the survivors won't know what to make of what they saw. Was it some kind of government experiment? A weather balloon? An alien starship? Like most UFO sightings, they won't know exactly what they saw, and no one will know what to believe when/if they tell others.

Worked out brilliantly for Hanzee that the idiot cops went "undercover" in t-shirts and wranglers, so the Gerharts didn't realize they were cops until they ran into Hank. Hanzee didn't plan it that way, but it worked to his advantage.

Was surprised Hanzee walked right past Bear and Lou and didn't take Bear out.

I think Hank lives for now.
    Elisaghm3
  • I have a theory that Mike Milligan will take credit for the destruction of the Gerharts. They are all wiped out and no one can really dispute it. This will move him up the ladder in the organization.

So much to enjoy here, but also scratching my head about some stuff. Probably take a re-watch or two until I figure out what I think on the whole. Either way it was an enjoyable hour of television.

The soundtrack was awesome. It actually reminded me of a couple of episodes of Cowboy Bepop. Thanks for the recommendation @Freddy. I'll definitely check out the whole album.

There was also a ton of No Country in this episode as well. Though I must say, even though the body count of the Fargo film is rather high this is getting further and further from the Fargo universe for me. I kind of felt the same way with the long-take massacre in Season 1 as well.

Lastly, the thing that probably bothered me the most about this episode was the white t-shirts. I just couldn't buy that they would be dumb enough to all wear the same jeans and t-shirts. It's better than cop uniforms, but you'd think they'd go for more variety.

  • So I just emailed some feedback. But figured I would also put it here. I am thinking there is a link between fishnado and the UFO. We clearly see the UFO is dripping water like it was previously submerged. COuld this be an explanation for fishnado in season 1?

I laughed out loud when Ben said "Oh Chirst, it's Rapid City all over again" I don't think its a coincidence that in the week before this episode aired we learned when season 3 will take place. People would be going ape shit about "Rapid City" if we didn't already know that we're going back the 21 Century next season. So I took him saying that as a joke, and it landed with me.

Martin Freeman doing the narration was delicious.  I was expecting Hawley to follow through on the UFO thing but certainly not for it to be so unambiguous and a deus ex machina, at that.  My dad was telling me how pervasive the UFO culture was during that time, so why not?  I would chalk it up to the narration indicating this was a true crime story and thus the stuff of legend, but older Lou had said something like, "I could tell you about it, but you wouldn't believe me."  Has the UFO been tracking the Gerhardts this whole time?  Peggy dismissing it made me laugh.  She's being, ya know?  No time fer thinking.

I hope Betsy is okay.  Lou has to make it home to see her.

Last night I was thinking how Wes Anderson the start was. On second watch, I saw the name of the market was Rushmore.

My DVR cut the show short. I got to the part where Lou is tending to his father in law.

I thought this episode was good, a lot darker in tone and less humor than last week.

The UFO's had to show up sooner or later.

I love the thing about there being a Rapid City massacre.

    Peggy standing by her man.

Lou's old lady, that made me so sad.

No the Fishnado was real world explained in the following episode @Hatorian

Is it really far fetched that an alien spaceship would be dripping water? I mean come on. My friend brought up a similar point, asking what was up with the water dropping from the ship...

Really people? An alien spacecraft pulls up and folks are questioning the dripping water?!?! lol
