As the title describes, this indie film from 2014 is about a Japanese girl who finds an old VHS tape of Fargo the movie. Believing the events of the movie to be real (taking "this is a true story" literally), she sets out to find the money buried by Carl Showalter.

Hearing about this concept instantly caught my interest, so I watched it. It's kind of slow, but still enjoyable, mainly due to the absurdity of her quest. This quest doesn't really get started until about a third of the way through, however. I figured it was worth mentioning on here. Also funny enough, this film unlike Fargo is actually based on a true story of a woman who went looking for the fictional money and wasn't so successful.

I believed this story for years, ever since seeing the Coens mention it on the DVD extras. The real story, however, seems to be a lot more complicated and she apparently wasn't looking for the "Fargo" money, but actually went there to kill herself. Here's an article I read around the time of the film's release: http://kotaku.com/the-real-story-behind-kumiko-the-treasure-hunter-1694010461

I still haven't had a chance to catch up with the movie, but I really do want to check it out.

Huh, that's interesting. So that means this movie is a film inspired by a true story that isn't actually true about a true story that isn't actually true. Also sad.
