Girls - Season 5 Episode 3 "Japan"
It's a little late, but what did you think?
Trump Room, lol.
I don't know how I feel about most of what happened. This show makes me feel vaguely annoyed and constantly awkward. :-/

When Shosh is sad my heart breaks. I love Shosh and I think she is the only character who isn't damned to hell. I guess I see her as somewhat innocent. I thought the whole arch of her loving and going all in on that lifestyle was sweet. The way they started the episode with her in Japan and the titles I thought great a whole episode dedicated to my hero. Then they had to go bring in naked girl, oh no! But all was not lost when they were doing the photo shoot they were some funny lines. Then the Adam Driver stuff which makes me kinda pissed. I'll let them have that if I get more shosh and the hello kitty headphones in that pop art house. Well I guess the writers have to stomp on our dreams and get Shosh back to her venomous friends. Anyway one thing if they are going to show an all girl Japanese pop punk band, it should always be Shonen Knife that should be a law.
New names for Girls girls.
I was so sad that she lost her job, just when she seems to have found herself in Japan. I'm guessing at the end she decides to stay, correct? I feel bad for her boyfriend though. That was a pretty crappy way to end things - I mean, it's not Abraham-TWD level, but it's still crappy.
I can understand Hannah's upset at the pics in the phone. I'd be all WTF about that and probably delete them too. Sorry, but that's the truth. I shouldn't be shocked she'd replace them with photos of herself (I wouldn't), but I guess if he's not going to view *stuff online* like every other red-blooded American, she has no choice. I just worry she's going to lose the best guy she's ever had.
I'm just over Marnie in every step of the way. She's just so full of herself and tried to be all hippie and easy going, which is the total opposite of who she is.
I saw the Jessa and Adam thing brewing even when Hannah went off to college. Just shocked Jessa is actually following Girl Code to some extent. Not sure how I feel about them, but I would think that her friendship with Hannah would implode, which necessarily wouldn't be a bad thing.
The way Marnie pronounced Ecuador - they just keep finding small new ways to make her so insufferably pretentious.
I'm conflicted about the photo thing. I'm very anti-porn (I know, I'm one of 10 people in the world) so I admired Fran's reasoning, but on the other hand, I'd be annoyed if my boyfriend had naked exes on his phone too. I think Hannah stepped well over the line deleting them, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing. I like that this show makes me squirm uncomfortably sometimes when it has the characters do or say things I might relate to but feel slightly ashamed of.
And poor Shosh's boyfriend. That wasn't cool. Though I can't remember if he's actually a good guy or not - did he encourage her to go to Japan?
I'm firmly on Fran's side of the naked pictures of his exes department. I'm not saying that's how I'd roll, but assuming none of them contacted him and asked him to delete them, it seems like he's making a moral and ethical choice to spank to them, and was honest about his intentions when confronted with them. Hannah deleting them was straight up bullshit. Hannah has the right to be offended, and she has the right to choose to dump Fran for not respecting her wishes w/r/t being sensitive to her insecurities, but she has about as much right to delete them from his phone as he would burning every poem any boy has ever given her in some box she keeps, or a piece of art Adam gave her, or any other emotionally valuable piece of her relational history she'd choose to keep for whatever private reasons she would have. It was so pre-meditated and vindictive too. No way they recover from this.
In principle I respect Jessa's attempt to be a stand up girl for Hannah, but Hannah is pretty awful, and her and Adam are pretty cute together, and I'm sure it will make a glorious wreckage when and if it falls apart, so I hope they go for it. That said, perhaps the only thing keeping Jessa for being her usual terrible self is her clinging to The Code, so maybe abandoning it will fast forward to said glorious wreckage.
Shosh in Japan would have been right at home as a Sailor Moon origin story, so of course I was onboard for EVERYTHING that happened. I hope she does stay. As always, I could do with a bit more transparency in her dealings with her putative American boyfriend, but he seemed to get the message, and I'm sure he'll be fine. I thought it was interesting that in the behind the scenes interview Dunham said the Japanese parts were a result of tons of research into Japanese culture and she wanted to show something that would resonate with the majority of Japanese young people that might watch the show. I don't know anything about Japanese young people, but I'll eat my TV remote if that's "representative", unless she means it in the same sense of the word that she uses when she says Girls is "representative" of 20 something life in Brooklyn. In other words, more aspirational than representative, and only to a very small slice of a very particular piece of culture and demographics. But what the hell, it was, as Girls is itself, entertaining. Having said that, Shosh and ridiculously cute Japanese guy (Yoshi?) aren't right for each other, either. He doesn't seem the type to support the occasional crazy night out, which seems like a lane Shosh needs to swerve into from time to time.
Marn... is she even a real person at this point? The only thing I really feel in connection to her is disappointment in Ray that he can't look past her "crazy attractive in a Peter Pan sort of way" features to see how dull and incurious she is. Even if she lost her mind and settled for him, they'd be so crazy unhappy it might bring on the seventh seal spoke of in Revelations. It's too bad Ray decided to start giving a damn about his life after Soshanna broke up with him, but so it goes. I forgot about Ray in my previous analysis of the series. I like Ray, I like Ray and Adam as roommates.

What about Elijah? He seems to be a main part of the show now. Guest Corey Stoll is his new thang. Most of the time I find him annoying, and a little bitchy. Sometimes he can steal a scene with a quip or comment. The last episode where he asked naked girl if she had a spinal ailment during the photo shoot got a good laugh. I would like to see him become a better person rather than a rip on the Jack character from that 90's sitcom.
Elijah is hilarious, but I like that he's small doses - I don't want to see a whole storyline about him, it would be too much. That thing he said about smiling like you know cake's coming cracked me up, because that's pretty much the only thing that would get me to smile for a photo!
I think I'm more firmly with you on Hannah deleting the pictures now - at first I was like, "Okay, that's not cool but I get why she did it", but the more I think about it the more an invasion of his space it seems. It's kind of like reading someone's diary and then ripping out pages you don't like.
