Oh, Jim and ARon....

DrKenDrKen Chicago
It just cracks me up to hear you guys.  In the Magnolia 'cast you both say "I would have an impossible time maintaining a friend network of more than 10 people"....

Bald Move.

I listen to you guys everyday.  I know I can't say I'm your friend but you guys have a night of free drinks and boring conversation on me whenever we get within a few miles of each other.  I suspect I'm not alone.

Thanks for all your work.

Also, forgot to mention, the night of free drinks and boring conversation is also extended to anyone that gives me the code word of "Bald Move" as well.

  • something I've been thinking about for a longtime that I finally decided to bring up here...

I'm a independent hip-hop label owner in Chicago. I've talked about my
label before on the music thread, a few board members were familiar.
We're not huge by any means, but we have been around for 15+ years and
have had a lot of success (as far as underground hip-hop goes). A few of
our releases are considered Chicago hip hop classics, and our artists
(including myself) have toured the US, Europe & Japan extensively,
all on our own (not tagging along as opening acts, etc).

That is all to preface this thought I've been having for a few years...
as a huge Bald Move fan, I always thought it would be cool to organize
some kind of event here in Chicago merging music with some sort of
appearance from Jim & A-ron. My hang-up in mentioning this (I've
started at least 3 emails to the guys that I never sent) was that I had
little to no idea what Jim & A-ron would want to do at an event like
this. I first thought of this years ago, but now that the guys have
started the Lunch with J&A and Drinks with J&A (which admittedly
I've never checked out, I'm an audio-only podcast guy), it seems like
maybe there would be some legs to this idea. When I heard recently about
their appearance at the Con in Alabama, it started sounding even more
    plausible.

My idea was that we would have DJs & artists from my label (as well
as other local artists, to keep it diverse and not just hip-hop), and
have Jim and A-ron maybe be at a booth to 'meet & greet' with fans,
sell merch, etc, and also do some sort of on-stage 'performance'...
which was the part I wasn't sure would make sense. I don't think they'd
want to get up there and do a live podcast type talk, and they aren't
stand-up comedians or anything (that I know of), so I couldn't wrap my
head around what their performance would be. However, now that they have
started branching out to more than just TV/Movies/Culture podcasts, and
are, more-or-less, coming up with 'original material', I think that an
hour or so of them on stage would be something they might be interested
    in thinking about.

I have plenty of experience organizing shows for my label here in
Chicago, and have the right connections & venues that would fit the
event, anywhere from a 400 cap room (thinking Chop Shop/1st Ward in
Wicker Park or Reggie's in the South Loop) to even an 800 cap room if
necessary (Bottom Lounge on Lake Street). That side of things would be
no problem for me, and with the combined draw of the musical acts and
Bald Move, I think we could do it proper.

Feedback on whether or not this sounds like something worth pursuing?

I love the idea of a hip hop show pausing and being like so who wants to record a live Game of Thones podcast?

hahaha... i know... that was my initial hesitation. however, we're kinda on the more nerdy intelligent side of hip hop. our fans would mesh OK with the Bald Move crowd, most of them anyway. we also cater to stoners and graffiti artists, but still.

but in reality, it wouldn't be strictly a hip hop show, we'd bring other artists in as well. more of a musical backdrop for a Bald Move event than the other way around, at least the way i've envisioned it.

and @Hatorian, all good, i was the one who jacked the thread with my 4 paragraph essay anyway.

  • @DallasJacksonG4 I'd really like to sample some of the stuff on your label.  Send me a PM with some more details so I can check it out.

That's an excellent point, Dr Ken. The hand full of times we've done meet ups were always very, very fun and natural. It's a weird asynchronous type of friendship, but it does feel more like meeting old friends than new people.

As far as physical meet ups, I think it's almost inevitable at some point that we'll do some sort of PAX like Bald Move meet up. We talk about it all the time privately. I don't want to speak for Jim, but personally I'm up for appearing for almost anything aside from like a fucking Klan rally, so long as you can get me out to the place and put me up. We used to do more ironically before we went full time, because we both had way more disposable income.

So if you have ideas email us and we can talk.

@A_Ron_Hubbard I asked on a LWJ&A a while back if you were planning on a PAX East trip anytime soon. I don't think I specified why, but I was living in Boston at the time and was hoping for some kind of meet-up, even if that just meant me buying you guys some beers at a divey bar.

It has to be kind of weird for all parties involved though, right? You will have to give a run-down on how the NerdCon goes. Is this the first time you guys will have been special guests for something like that? Outside of maybe like the Breaking Badfest?
  • A_Ron_HubbardA_Ron_Hubbard Cincinnati, OH
We were also invited guests to the first few Walker Stalkers, which were pretty fun. Met tons of people at the first two WSCONs in Atlanta and the first one in CHI. Memorably got to do my Rick Grimes impression to Andy Lincoln at the first one. Got to interview Gwendoline Christie at the latter, which was awesome.

But it kind of dried up as they got bigger and we couldn't afford to travel. The BrBa Fan Fest which you mentioned was incredible for us as well. I'm excited for the NerdCon. I've been to Huntsville loads of times, and it sounds like from my mailbag that lots of people are going to be stopping by.

I sat back and hoped theyd come to NY because I know there's no way I'm going to Alabama alone to meet two gentlemen without my fiance giving me a serious side eye.
