Pocket Casts not updating premium ad-free feeds

A_Ron_HubbardA_Ron_Hubbard Cincinnati, OH
Hello, it has come to our attention that Pocket Casts has stopped updating our premium ad-free feeds.  This is a bummer because it is an extremely popular podcast player, and it hits close to home as it's my personal choice for podcast players.  I reported this issue to Shift Jelly on October 14th.

This happened once before, around July 15th, and it took them until around August 10th to get it fixed.  We have verified that there is nothing actually wrong with the feeds on our end, so it's sort of a waiting game.  If you have Pocket Casts and it's working, consider yourself lucky, and try to avoid re-subscribing or changing your password if you can help it, as it seems once the bug bites you, there isn't a way for now to overcome it.

I'm not sure if additional people reporting the issue would help, or hurt to be honest, as they're a small dev team of about 4 people and might be overwhelmed / annoyed rather than enlightened.  But if you want to go that route, you can report your issues here: http://support.pocketcasts.com/

If people have suggestions for other podcast players in the meantime, it might be helpful to post these below.

  • Your mileage may vary but I've had luck fixing this by removing the affected feeds and re-adding them through the pocketcasts web app (this is a not-super-cheap separate purchase although I think there's a trial).  I had to add them with the insecure "http" rather than "https" protocol tag.  When the list syncs to the app, the feed seems to work fine.

I also just tried and it let me add the LWJ&A feed through the iOS app the same way (http instead of https w/ the url-embedded creds), and it includes the episode from 10/14 so it seems to be updated.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

I'm just listening to the feeds that regular plebians listen to. I've never once heard you guys actually do an ad, lol, so I don't know what the big deal is honestly.

Fuckkk, glad its not just me man. I'll drop their support a line, PocketCast is such a great app though.

Yeah I was affected, but then I had to send my Note 7 back to Samsung in a fireproof box.

I'm now rocking an iPhone and the apple app has been solid.

  • Can someone post the url of the premium podcast here or point me to where I can find it? I keep using the one with ads. I may as well switch it while this thread is here. Thanks.
  • I've been using BeyondPod on Android for a long time, no issues with the premium firehose feed.
  • I guess I won't be asking you for the Grey Poupon.

I can't afford it any more. I spent my last $12 on my Bald Move membership. :( hahahaha

Login to Bald Move, hit the account menu option, the select "premium features" . All feed URLs and instructions to add them to your player are all located right there. Hope that helps!

What I've occasionally had to do is, within the Android app, unsubscribe from the premium feed, and re-add it using the user:password@feed url method, and that usually does the trick until the next time it starts acting up.

  • Just sent a support email to Shift Jelly, they usually have good support. I'll report back.
  • Coincidentally, I have just this evening swapped from podcast republic to pocket casts (so I can stream my podcasts to my sonos system) and the premium ad-free feeds are working well (just got Westworld 104) .. So hopefully this is a good sign..

Should this be affecting the link to ad free casts in the Podcasts/iTunes? My bald move login has been getting rejected since Monday.
  • A_Ron_HubbardA_Ron_Hubbard Cincinnati, OH
No, it should only affect Pocket Casts.  On your accounts page, is there any unusual status for your subscription?  If so, or for whatever reason it's not working for you, hit us up on accounts@baldmove.com and we'll get you working again.
  • PocketCasts updated their iOS app today but the issue is still happening to me. I wasn't shocked as I figured it was more of a back end issue on their end and not something wrong with the app itself but didn't hurt to try.

    That was it. Thanks.
  • This is funny, I always wondered what the ad-free feeds were, because I never took ARon's ads as real ads.  I guess I just like the sound of his sexy baritone
Yeah? Well, y'know... that's just like uh... your opinion, man.

I finally took the time to get this working again but I'm also keeping some of the non-ad-free ones because I think the ads might be funny if they ever do some.

    Hi @akritenbrink

How'd you get it working again?  Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with the stuff I've tried.

    Thanks!

I just unsubscribed and re-subscribed used the instructions they posted. I did it through the web interface.

So, is pocketcasts working for people now?  I never heard from support, but they said in the ticket they were unlikely to respond to individual tickets.

Mine's working using this method with my iPhone. I just tried to use the old method(just copying the https link) and it's still not working that way.

It's working on my Android phone. Just listened to the Doctor Strange podcast.

  • Mine has been working for a while, although I had to resubscribe to the all the feeds.

Finally got it working again. I'm having to resubscribe to all the feeds using the above method (http://name:password@feedurl).

The issue I found is that the first few times you enter the URL into PocketCasts, it won't find the feed but if you keep searching over and over (I just kept adding and removing the trailing slash in the URL), it will *eventually* find it.

Thanks for everyone's comments here. As much as I love PocketCasts... if this happens again, I'm going to jump ship to a different podcast app.

  • @supermeng Yea, I already jumped. I was using Downcast while PocketCasts was messed up and now I'm kinda digging it more than PC
  • I've heard good things about Downcast also.  I'll try them as soon as I see another issue with PC.  Manually resubscribing to all the feeds was a pain and now that I'm authenticating using the URL, I'm wondering if it'll break again if I ever change my Bald Move password.  :)

Shit, I might switch too.  I love PC, but if a fellow PCer made the switch and is digging it...
