Forgive me if this has been addressed already, but if I buy a commissioned podcast now, will that count toward your goal now or do you wait until the actual podcast is made to cash in on that? I fully realize there will be a significant wait due to amount of commissions.
I already upped my membership and chipped in a donation as well but have been wanting to commission a podcast for a while, seems like the perfect time.
I had the same question; A. Ron confirmed that the payment given towards a commission does help them when given. I put some money towards 12 Monkeys... Can't go wrong with that.
Yeah, and we're running out of stock. One of my big priorities this week is to move a bunch of proposed commissions from the recent thread into the store.
Get on Patreon. I support a number of podcasts, channels and projects there, but doing so in many different places is not conducive to regular giving for me.
We used to be, but it didn't really fit us. In particular, there is no way to marry the existing club to the patreon services. They really force a certain relationship between creators and fans. I mean, we could add a patreon account to just take money, but there wouldn't really be away for people to get the extras. I wonder how well something like that would even work? But I understand the rub. There is this existing e-wallet for supporting content, and we're not on it, and how many fucking e-wallets do you want, anyway?
I have no interest in the extra content. Just like the podcasts. I am interested in donating on a regular basis, but I'd rather not have to donate somewhere other than Patreon as I use that for all of my other donations. This sounds like a "me" problem, though.
I just subscribed to the $5/month Club Bald Move. I'm feeling a little ashamed that it took me this long to start kicking you some cash. You guys have such insightful commentary on so many things -- it's really a refreshing change from most podcasts (and I should know --- I subscribe to 614 podcasts, cuz I'm just gonzo like that). I mean, you guys reviewed Primer!! When that episode popped up, I actually jumped out of my chair at work saying "YES!!" OK, summing up: good luck, guys. I hope this helps in some way.
Fuuuuuuuuuck this noise. Bald Move is NOT failing. I won't let it.
If I have to move my ass to Cincinnati and sell MY body on the street... well... I'm open to it.
So after putting some more thought to this, I've realized that maybe there's a way I can actually follow through with it....
Here's the deal: if Jim and A.Ron reach their $25,000 funding goal before the end of the year, I'll get a Bald Move-related tattoo.
I'm sure most people probably couldn't care less about some a-hole in California getting a tattoo; but hey, if it inspires people to kick down a few more bucks to help keep the lights on, why not?

so wait, like a tasteful little ankle tat, a tramp stamp, or a forehead branding?

I don't know about anyone else, but this is getting me to donate!
@voodoorat The bald move would be to get tattoos of Jim and A. Ron under his eyes like those teardrop tats that killers and rappers that pretend they're killers get. The baldest move would be to go full facial reconstructive surgery and turn half your face into Jim's face and other half into A. Ron's.

Well, if there are enough people like you out there, it might be worth it to throw it out there. I still have contact with the Patreon folks, I need to ask them if they'd let us post a no frills support thing out there. It's just extra revenue for them, but maybe they would feel it would violate the spirit of the thing, I dunno.

I think something classy and fashionable would be best. Maybe Aron getting sodomized by a sheik on a pile of money?
Most of my thoughts on this have already been said. (And apologies if I'm about to repeat something, but there's a lot of threads on this at this point and I've lost track.)
I'll just co-sign that I didn't join the club for the extras, but rather to support all the free content I had been consuming. And yes, $12/yr was crazy low. I, personally, am happy to donate and plan to upgrade my subscription. But I do understand the worry that jumping to $48 is going to hinder growth. It's not even so much a matter of what people can afford, but what they are willing to pay, and I think that number is going to be harder for new people and casual listeners to justify to themselves.
I also agree you would be crazy to not add ads, especially now that you've shown how far your reach spans. They aren't that intrusive when done properly (beginning, middle, and end of the show during the naturals transitions). And they're easy enough to skip through if it bothers someone that much.
But understanding that some people may expect more perks for the increased price, perhaps: 1) A sponsors' ad page on the website. It seems like a lot of BMers have their own projects or businesses that I'm sure they'd like to plug. Club membership (plus a small advertising donation?) lets them have a short blurb and link on your website for the year.
2) Monthly raffle that all club members are automatically entered into. Prize can be a merch item. Or maybe they get to remote in to one of the commissioned casts and play guest podcaster for a day.
3) Feedback segments. Only clubbers are able to submit feedback for shows. You wouldn't be able to submit through email anymore, only through a premium section of the website somehow.
4) You could get a lot more mileage out of your website than you currently do. Perhaps episode recap/commentary articles for some of the smaller but well-liked shows the podcasts don't cover. I'm sure there are some great writers amongst the clubbers that would love to volunteer to cover a favorite show.

Vote up. Looking at ways to generate more ad revenue without loading a lot of extra work on the guys, getting the website into HitFix or AVClub territory would make it a more appealing site for ad revenue.
Let's build a premium media review site and make Alan Sepinwall pay for it!
One of the 4156 bad asses. Am using paypal so will have to rejig everything to upgrade. It's only just renewed (Nov 3rd) so that's annoying.
As a suggestion, could you start adding your back catalogue to YouTube to try and tap into some ad revenue that way and bring new people to your site? I know it's no silver bullet but it's a start.
Man, you just wake up from a week-long bender from the Cubs winning the World Series and find this thread with Bald Move on the brink of destruction and then some hope and then pages later to an outpouring of love to the Save Bald Move movement and piles and piles of cash.
I feel like I've been through a roller-coaster of emotion over the course of 9 pages. It's like the Cubs were down 3-1 but then rallied in improbable fashion to shock the world. Jim and ARon, our personal George Baileys, are, once again, shocking the world.
To Jim and ARon, the richest men in town -
Here's to your continued fund raising good fortune.
You guys!!!! This sucks! Your podcasts make my bus commute WAY more enjoyable, and I don't want that to change anytime soon. I've upped my subscription to the new rate. It's a fair amount of money, but I was already subscribed at the $1/month level, and honestly, for the number of hours I listen to you guys talk every month, that was actually a ridiculously low price. So maybe all this is doing is just evening things out a little.
What a pity Amazon cut you off in November! I'm assuming holiday shopping was a hefty chunk of that affiliate link cash.
From being on the higher level patreon then making the move to the annual $12 i always thought that was crazy cheap for the content that we get. For the $48 it is a no brainer to me, where i live that is a lot less than a dinner out.
I love the premium content the Lunch with J & A and on the Rocks is a real highlight of my week when it comes to content. I really admire both of you for what you have done with Bald Move and hope that with the help of all of us you can come through the other side bigger and better!
I have dropped a donation in as im with paypal for the annual and cant change my account. (i think a few pages back, someone mentioned that they changed paypal payment and it asked for the new price??)
I just want to say that I really appreciate you guys laying it all out so honestly. I'll admit that I hesitated for a second at the price increase, until I thought about how many hours I listen to you pretty much every week and how much you increase my enjoyment of so many shows, and I thought about how much it would suck if you weren't able to do this anymore. Then it became a no-brainer and very much worth it. I rarely take advantage of any of extras membership offers, but I sure enjoy listening to you guys talk! Keep up the good work! I'm going to be watching and hoping that gap closes up more every time I check it until you're in the clear.
Suggestion: Open up this weeks live LWJ&A to non members as a preview to what Lunchs are generally like. Maybe do a Dinner With J&A over the weekend so the 9-5 crowd can participate live too. It could be a special fundraiser episode.
Also, when you pass the $138k goal, 80% remaining to future BM funding, 10% to charity, 5% to Aron (to tackle that 401k and credit card debt), and 5% to Jim (to keep him from gaining controlling interest in BM).
Okay...um....72%!?!?! Holy shit. As much as I know we should just be focusing on meeting and surpassing the goals that are in place. I really am hopeful and excited to hear what you guys can do without needing Amazon support. It has to be scary to be that beholden to company. And this is why it should be scary. I am really excited to see what you do without needing to rely on them.
@A_Ron_Hubbard & @Jim to some degree has this whole struggle reenergized and excited you? As terrifying as it has and will continue to be, I can also imagine the struggle really putting a fire under your asses. Since now you are forced to make-it-or-break-it? Maybe I am just projecting.
I just came across this hashtag and didn't read this whole thread. I saw the video saying you talked with amazon and it wasn't going anywhere with people. If you haven't already, look into the linus tech tips youtube channel and he had the same issue with amazon because the didnt like how he was linking shit or something and he had to fight pretty hard or get int contact with the right people, not the low level grunts.
It might be worth looking up his struggle with amazon affiliate and watching some of those videos and maybe even reaching out to him or his team to ask for advice or maybe some contacts, because he eventually got it reinstated. It seems like amazon don't give a shit until you make a certain amount, then they look at your shit and if they see anything remotely close to a violation, they just cancel, and then the only people you can get in contact with right away is peons that don't really have any control. and people give up, yet you'll still have llinks on your youtbue videos or whever you advertise shit.
Sorry if this has been brought up in the thread, but i would not give up on getting that amazon revenue back so easily.

This is a perfect analogy and... this would make for a great commissioned podcast (IMO).
PS - I'm from St. Louis. A Cards fan and a Cubs fan come together. It's a Bald Move miracle!
