The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Anybody else excited about this, my Wii-U has actually been in the closet for the past 10 months.  I actually bought it 2 years ago in hopes of this game coming out.  I hope the Wii-U hardware can handle it, I heard that the demo was having a hard time keeping up to 30fps

  • I also plan to get this for my Wii-U. I though about buying a Switch but soured a bit after I read about the lack of backward compatibility. But if you're right and it lags then maybe it's worth getting a Switch anyway - it wouldn't be the first time I bought a console just to play a new Zelda game.

yeah, I specifically got a GameCube to play Windwaker,  Finished the game and eventually sold the system back to GS.  only game i ever had and played on it

  • I'm generally a Nintendo kind of guy so I'm getting it with the Switch because I'll likely play more Switch games in the future. This game looks real good though, I'm pretty hyped for open world style Zelda.
  • Initial reviews are also looking good.
  • I really wish I had the money to pre-order it.  I always missed out on the markups on ebay for out of stock nintendo products.  I heard some classic nes systems went for $1,000+.

"I don't give a fuck about your war or your President"  Snake Plissken (Escape from New York)

  • I'll get it once I pick up a Switch in a few months. I sold my Wii U almost a year ago once Nintendo basically discontinued games for it. I really enjoyed the system, but I saw no reason to hold on to it for a year just for Zelda.

I'm excited for Breath of the Wild and the Switch, though.

It does seem like the Wii U was just the middle child between the wildly successful original Wii, by all accounts a huge financial success for Nintendo, and what looks like could be a long lifetime for the Switch. It didn't have all the motion controls of the Wii but it wasn't as portable as the Switch and it seems like not many developers actually did much with the tablet part besides using it as a second screen or and inventory list for some games. Of course I did enjoy my time with the Wii U but Nintendo maybe should have just waited until they developed the Switch and just released an upgraded Wii in the mean time.

  • @darwinfeeshy I should have done the same thing, but this is the main reason I bought the Wii U dammit, so I stubbornly kept it and pre-ordered Breath of the Wild on it. I think I'm gonna play though it and then get rid of the Wii U right after.

I REALLY hope Nintendo finally stops being idiots with the way they manage the eShop and Virtual Console games, tying them to devices instead of an online account that you can download to any device like every other modern console is a deal-breaker for me. If they keep up that idiotic policy with the Switch I probably won't get one. I pre-ordered one in January but cancelled it a day or two later when I saw the absolutely pathetic "list" of launch titles. Which I regretted because apparently I could've easily doubled my money on eBay or something, ugh. Oh well, hopefully it doesn't suck and they'll have a Mario bundle by the end of the year.

It appears they are indeed now tied to accounts instead of systems. And yeah the launch list is a little dull other than Zelda but the list of upcoming third party titles is interesting, you could probably hold out on getting one until later though.

  • @Alkaid13 That's great to see, I kinda half regret cancelling my pre-order now knowing that. I could deal with just Zelda as a new title if I knew I could buy a half dozen Virtual Console games knowing it's not tied to the device. But it's just as well I guess, I'm sure at the end of the year there will be at least one console bundle to save a few bucks.

I feel like I got my money's worth with the WiiU.  Cecily and I beat Super Mario Brothers, SMBW 3D, played 100+ hours of Mario Kart, about the same on Smash Bros, and Jack was along for a lot of that ride.  Plus, Adventureland got a lot of play at parties and what not.  I am disappointed that they pushed the new Zelda back for the Switch, but I'm also not super pissed to only get, what, 4 years out of the WiiU?

The only thing I"m pissed about with the U is that they never made DLC for Adventureland.  God, with just a few more maps of Mariochase and Ghost Mansion that would have been such a great little party title.

So Breath of the Wild is already being listed 4th best game of all time on Metacritic and being compared to The Witcher 3

So I suppose given that release is tomorrow, now would be a good time to determine if there should be a separate thread for spoilers. Personally I'm not too spoiler averse and I already know some things about the game but other people might want a pure experience.

Yeah, Nintendoland was great for parties. Nintendo definitely is king of local/party multiplayer, and they're continuing this trend on the Switch with games like 1-2 Switch. People hate on it for being simple and gimmicky, but it looks like a blast to play with friends.

Was talking with two of my best friends last night, and we decided to do some real "let's pool our lawn job money and allowances together" shit. Basically, we're going to go in on the system and game, and then pass it around as each of us gets done with BotW. Friend A buys the Switch, B buys the game, then C pays A $200 for the game and the Switch. Friend A gets it first since he's putting up the most, but he also gets $200 back. I'm friend B and don't get shit back for the game, but get to play it second and don't have to fork over any money for the Switch. Friend C gains the most by getting the Switch and the game for only $200, but there is good chance that he's going to be waiting around 6 months to play it. Now C keeps the Switch and game permanently once he gets it, with A and B retaining limited borrowing rights. I (and by "I" I mean "B" of course) get first dibs on future borrowings since I'm basically paying a $60-70 preorder for a long term rental. Or is it A who gets first dibs since he's essentially paying 100 bucks or so for a long term rental. Oh well, I'm sure that one will work itself out. So there you have it, a classic case of ABC Friend Money Stuff Share. Nothing could go wrong.

So Breath of the Wild is already being listed 4th best game of all time on Metacritic and being compared to The Witcher 3

What kind of busted ass list is that? Only goes back to 1995 and GTA4 beats out every other GTA!? Yeah, great list. I mean, naturally, no Top 20 would be complete with any less than 2 Tony Hawk Pro Skater sequels and a 17 year old football game, and don't you dare put Super Mario 64 or Gran Turismo 2 in the top 100. No sir, those coveted spots are reserved for real prestige titles like "NCAA Football 2004" and "Burnout 3: Takedown".

Almost returned my copy when I saw it listed as 4th, no way it can hold up to that hype

Metacritic is like the "Nate Silver" of video game polling. Sure, today they say Ocarina of Time is the best, but then everybody votes for Pokemon Go

Jeez, these reviews. I was hoping to pick up a Switch at some point but if this is as good as they say it is and with Nintendo's weird insistence on under supplying everything it sounds like it might be a while.

Giant Bomb - 5/5. Link's most ambitious adventure is one of Nintendo's crowning achievements.

Gamespot - 10/10. Breath of the Wild is a defining moment for The Legend of Zelda series, and the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created.

Game Informer - 10/10. It represents a profound new direction for one of gaming’s best franchises and a new high point for open-world interactive experiences.

Destructoid - 10/10. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an evolution of the formula for both eastern and western philosophies alike, and a new blueprint.

Polygon - 10/10. In an open world full of big changes, Breath of the Wild also almost always feels like a Zelda game — and establishes itself as the first current, vital-feeling Zelda in almost 20 years.

IGN - 10/10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise.

Metro Gamecentral - 10/10. The best Zelda there’s ever been, and very possibly the best video game ever made.

I'm playing the Wii-U version of Breath of the Wild now, about 10hrs in, Its Amazing.  It lags in a few areas, but thats cuz the graphics that seem simple at first, are actually really really tight.  The world is huge and beautiful, it rivals Skyrim and Witcher 3 in world creation

The weapon durability thing ruins the game imo. Even weapons you get in shrines last literally 4 enemies before they break.

I can put up with cookie cutter quests that are all basically "being me x widgets for an upgrade". I can put up with the story being the exact same thing.

I can put up with the survival mechanics.

But why they decided to implement a weapon durability system with no way to craft, repair, or easily buy new weapons I will never understand.

It really kills the experience when I'm supposed to be the Hero of Hyrule and 99% of the game my main weapon is a stick or a zombie arm.

Picked up a Switch and Zelda and it is incredible. @Luke you don't play the game for long before your picking up broadswords/Claymores/energy swords, I was worried about weapon durability but about 5 hours in it's a non issue.

As for the Switch itself, I'm actually super impressed with it, I got the Shovel Knight complete collection and am thoroughly enjoying it. Battery life doesn't bother me because I have so many cords and I'm only taking it to work and theres an easily accessible plug in. The portability is really incredible. My only complaint is the trigger/bumpers on the JoyCon are insanely tiny and my fat fingers have accidentally hit the wrong ones at inopportune times. Pro controller is very nice.

I think my only complaint is the rain, like early in the game when I was just exploring it was a neat thing that it affected climbing but by the end of the game when I'm actually trying to accomplish stuff it got really annoying how much I noticed it raining.

I was pleasantly surprised how little I was affected by the weapons breaking. Leading into the game I worried about that but after a few hours I was just swimming in weapons.

the weapon durability is pretty annoying for me. Simply because my 6 year old is playing and normally I wouldn't mind him playing my game and helping me level up and collect shit. But i can't with this game cuz he can destroy all my shit and he can't beat certain puzzles and bosses by himself. So i am basically playing 2 games simultaneously. My game and then helping my son with the parts he can't get over.

I will say this switch thing is awesome. Being able to go from TV to couch to upstairs to car is awesome. Being able to continue my game when the kids want to watch spongebob is sweet. Can't wait for Skyrim. glad i didnt buy the remaster. definitely going to pick it up for switch when it comes out and put another 100 hours in.

Also so surprised about the shortages in the US. I just walked into a game store here in Singapore about a week after launch and picked one up. they only had a few consoles left and only 1 color but it definitely was easy. My buddy in Cali still hasn't gotten his and hes already tried on launch day and the restock day (queue 18 when they got 15 consoles...sucks)

Dude the Switch is incredible. Power be damned, this may be my favorite console of all time. You know leading into the release there were tons of pieces on game sites talking about how 3rd parties don't matter, people buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games and while usually true the Switch SHOULD be the system to buck that trend.

I played 80% of Zelda right on the tablet, taking it to work was just the realization of a dream alot of us gamers have had for years. This is what the Vita was supposed to be.

Seriously fuck all them people that said they don't want games like Red Dead 2 or Mass Effect or any other AAA 3rd party game on this thing. After Zelda I'm fucking depressed all these other games are tethered to systems that can't be easily taken with you.

As for Skyrim the only way I buy that is if they are porting the remaster. Skyrim is perfect for the Switch, just give me the mod support and you're gold.
