Harlots - SPOILERS

Has anyone been watching this new original series on Hulu? I love period pieces and especially the late 1700s, so this was an easy sell for me. Plus, it's got a great cast with some recognizable names: Samantha Morton (John Carter, Minority Report, Fantastic Beasts, and so much more), Jessica Brown-Findlay (Downton Abbey), Danny Sapani (Sembene on Penny Dreadful), and so many others. The show centers around the rivalry between two brothel madams (one affluent, one working class) in 1760's London, but it's also character driven with the many 'harlots' in their employ. They just aired the 3rd episode and I'm all in. Definitely check it out!

Yes I need to check it out.

  • This sounds like something I'd like. Might as well make use of the Hulu I keep paying for.

  • I'm a sucker for period pieces too, but will wait until I can get the whole season before watching it. Glad to hear it's good!!!

It's a ton of fun, and the writing is pretty solid. (I also LOVE this time period). And goddamn, if Samantha Morton doesnt have the best whore's laugh I've ever heard!

On the downside - FUCKING MODERN POP IN MY PERIOD DRAMAS GET OUT. Yeah, it's a pet peeve. Marie Antoinette did it, and now everyone is just trying to copy it. It worked for me in that film because they went all in - same with Knight's Tale. But it's such a trend nowadays to throw in some modern music to make history edgy and relateable for the teens!!! History is not hard to relate to, they were people - write them well and your job is done, modern pop is just lazy shorthand.

We finally have a premiere date for season 2!  Mark your calendars for July 11!
  • MichelleMichelle California
Season 2 just started!  The first two episodes are up on Hulu and they do not disappoint!

Is anyone other than me watching?  If not, you're missing out!  The cast is all-star with extensive credits to their names:  Samantha Morton, Kate Fleetwood, Lesley Manville, Danny Sapani (BM'ers may recognize him as Sembene in Penny Dreadful), Jessica Brown Findlay (memorably as Lady Sybil in Downton Abbey), Liv Tyler, and *so* many others.

  • Thanks for the reminder! I forgot to finish season 1 but need to get back on that. There’s too much TV!!!!!!!!!

@akritenbrink It's soooooo good!  You're only 2 episodes in - just wait, it gets crazy!  And then there's season 2 which is off the hook!  @hisdudeness915 did you ever finish season 1?
  • MichelleMichelle California
@Michelle I just now got around to this. I've watched two episodes... So good! I love the use of modern music, the costumes, hair, makeup, etc. I love the way it recognizes the darkness in their lives immediately but also has a lot of humor. I'm definitely hooked!
Samantha Morton is so perfect in this role!  Her cackle just kills me.  But also, wow, Lesley Manville is amazing.  Like, I can actually picture her being Lydia Quigley back in the day, not just acting on screen.   But yeah, they did an incredible job with the makeup and wigs, and just little things that are so true to that time.

@A_Ron_Hubbard & @Cecily - you two are the pineapples of Cincinnati.

I *loved* the Bald Move TV coverage you gave to Harlots today!  I really hope @Jim gets into this show as well.  Yes, there's a lot of gratuitous sex but as you know, it's about *so* much more.  The political intrigue and rivalry between Lydia & Margaret is my favorite aspect of this series - but also, the struggle of these women to just survive, surrounded by awful men in that time period, makes you really care about some of these characters.

As I said in my previous comment, Samantha Morton as Margaret Wells is so perfectly cast.  She is a *gem*, and Lesley Manville as Lydia Quigley is just *chef's kiss* so good.  I wonder if you recognize Kate Fleetwood (who plays Nancy) from Les Miserables? She was the woman who led the crowd of women who angrily shamed Anne Hathaway out of the factory she worked in at the beginning of the movie.  Also, the man who played George Howard was in the train episode of the Romanoffs.

Oh also, Harris’ List was a real thing:  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris%27s_List_of_Covent_Garden_Ladies

Can't wait for your regular dedicated coverage in July for season 3 and the preview cast!

Awesome! Our plan is to handle it much like American Horror Story, instant take Wednesday night, with feedback / mailbag either part of Friday's BMTV podcast or on the following weeks show. We have no idea how popular this will be / how much feedback we'll get. But we're super excited for Harlot's return!

Sorry, we had a hitch last night and couldn't get it out til this evening. We'll try to do better next week!

Also, something happened with the levels while we were recording, and I got it listenable but it's a bit boomy. I just forgot how to record a podcast in the home studio guess.

The first podcast did not disappoint!  Loved it!
This is going to be a great season for the show and for the pod!

Question though:  last season, Fanny's baby was named Mercy.  I guess she changed it to Kitty in memory of her?

@A_Ron_Hubbard & @Cecily, toward the end of the season 2 finale the justice admits to William North that he spared Margaret from hanging and shipped her off to Virginia.  He then goes to tell Charlotte, Lucy, and Nancy.  So they know.
  • CecilyCecily Cincinnati
Oooooooh good catch, Michelle!  I'm going to have to go back and watch that again!

Yeah, William's in one of the taverns and sees Justice Hunt in there drinking also - he confronts him and asks if he's drinking away his guilt and is about to beat the crap out of him, then the justice tells him that he spared her.

While we're on the season 2 finale, question:  do you think that Fallon had any actual feelings of love for Lucy?  When the ladies have him tied up and are threatening him into giving them the names of his cohorts (Blayne, Quigley, Lidington), he tells Lucy that what he felt for her was real.  I know he was a scumbag and a killer, but even scumbags and killers can catch feelings.  When he and Lucy were lounging in bed together an episode or two earlier than this, they were really tender and affectionate with each other.   I mean, they couldn't have redeemed him anyway and I don't think I would have supported a continued relationship between them - and my gut tells me he was just using her - but a small part of me wondered if he really did fall for her.  I just watched it again the other night so this is kind of in my mind right now.   I do want her to find real love with someone, but she has *so* much to learn still.

I absolutely believe he loved her...after he manipulated her into becoming the type of woman that he was interested in.  He entered into this relationship with the intention of using her, of course, but capitalizing on her previous trauma and making her believe that she was a murderer just like he is was still manipulation.  I also believe that modern-day abusers, for example, can genuinely love their victims.  There are just more conditions attached.

If the brotherhood had gotten to Lucy first, or if she was in Kitty's shoes when Kitty was snatched, I also believe that he would have sold her out or murdered her himself, love or no.
