Remaster or reboot an old game

What old games would you want to see either remastered exactly as they were with new graphics or a reboot of an old franchise that hasn't been done.

I have 2.

Socom 1 and 2: the best tactical 3rd person shooter on the planet. It was one of the first true online multiplayer games for Consoles. It was so far ahead of its time that the game came with a headset. It is the godfather of console shooters. Yes counter strike came out first for the PC but nothing Beats Socom on the consoles. It's a shame nothing has replaced it. It's really frustrating that Sony who owns the IP won't do anything with it. Guess they don't want to piss of EA or Activision who would definitely lose a chunk of customers.

Original Shadowrun: not talking about the game that came out early 2000s. Talking about the Sega game early 90s.

SOCOM was great but do you think we could go back to a game that plays like that after a decade+ of CoD and Battlefield style military shooters?

They should reboot Half Life 2. They can call it something like "Episode 3"

Well that's the problem and why it probably hasn't been done. In today's ADD world people don't want to wait to get back in the action. Respawn is king. But People who like FPS run and gun, die then come back instantly have like a million games to play. COD, Battlefield, Titanfall, Battelfront l, Halo, all cater to the same style of play. Even the newer third person online shooters like Division are not the same because they have this lame RPG and gun system element that totally supports grinders.

Why can't us tactical gamers get at least one third person game like Socom where patience is a virtue and team work is critical to success and it's a very simple 8v8 or at max 16v16 with no RPG or upgrade model? Also Socom literally built the Clan battle model. In the age of e-sports and competitive gaming it seems like it would do pretty well for at least a niche group of players. I still talk to a lot of my old clan buddies from Socom days and all of them say the same thing. If Socom was back there's no question that would be the game of choice. But their stuck playing COD cuz they have no choice. And the ones who don't play would pick up a PS4 same day and happily pay $60 for Socom Remaster.

It's just like the movie industry. Big Budget movie studios only fund what they know will sell. It sucks. Socom 2 was rated number 1 in the most popular game people asked for a remaster but it fell on deaf ears. There were a few indie projects that came out for PC but no major studio has released anything since Socom 4 which only bombed because 1. They tried to become COD and 2. The PS hack hit the same week it launched.

Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist but I really think Socom would sell at least 2-3 million copies. But all of those 2-3 million users would be from COD and Battlefield customers. And Sony doesn't want to piss them off and siphon their sales. There are a few PC games that have tried to replicate the model. H hour and Insurgency Socom mod. But both are indie projects and just don't have the funds and resources to develop a solid console port. H Hour especially was supposed to be promising and even had a plan for a console version but they are going through funding hell right now and the PC version is still in Alpha which means any console version is waaay far away.

Legacy of Kain. I would love to have a remastered collection as well as a sequel to finish the story.

I would say KOTOR 3, but I don't want that because EA has the Star Wars license and they have already managed to run the Bioware brand into the ground.

I would want Obsidian to develop it, but that would require Disney to actually give a shit about quality in games and publish things themselves.

I can't imagine it would cost that much money to simply remaster Socom 2 and put some dedicated servers for it. Socom 2 still gets like 40 people a night playing on PS2 and X-link. Then if it sells well they would have s much better justification to build Socom 5.

But I read an article from one of the Sony leaders who basically said "yea we know Socom 2 is the most requested remastered game but they need to stop living on nostalgia and get with the times" which is a garbage response considering how many other old games they remaster.

@Hatorian Not SOCOM at all but your comment games that don't just respawn got me wondering, have you tried Player Unknowns Battlegrounds? It's a game where 100 players (in squads or no, if you're solo everyone else is solo) parachute onto an island, search houses and try and find guns and shit and last one standing wins. It really scratches that itch of having high stakes and approaching every situation super carefully the way you would in one of those old tactical shooters. It's a little jankier than you'd want a serious tactical military game to be since it's based on mods so maybe you'd feel the same as the other mods you were talking about, but holy shit it's tense.

@Hatorian Shadowrun for the win. It's crazy that it hasn't ever been done properly; like "one of the best games ever made. period." properly. Although, I hear the kickstarter reboot isn't bad: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun_Returns

For me, it's all about SaGa Frontier:

Such a cool universe and concept. Seriously, any fan of old school JRPGs that hasn't played it is missing out. And for those who have, you already know how deep of a well there is to mine. Hell, just make a Skyrim/Fallout type game set in that universe and you've got gold.

I know Robotron 2084 got a modernization with Geometry Wars, but it still falls waaaaay short of the two stick arcade control and frantic desperation of the original.

It’s one of those games that you'd have to not only improve the (already brilliant) cpu-controlled game logic but also at least replicate the way a human interacts with the physical arcade game controls.

  • They aren't that old, but I'd love to see remasters of both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. It'd be great to have them at 60fps. Plus, Demon's is only on PS3 and I'd love to see it updated for newer hardware.

I'd also like a solid reboot of Vectorman. I was also a big fan of that on the Genesis. But I don't want a 3D reboot.

@Freddy it would be nice to see a saga frontier remaster that adds in the cut scenario that is still mostly in the game.

I have hope that eventually Square Enix will be forced to dig deeper into its back catalog since they have re released all of Final Fantasy on every platform known to man.

Fuck yea, I loved making giant piles of those satchels in the single player and watching that grenade slowly arc over before the giant explosion. I still have the disc, tried installing it a few years ago but wasn't able to get it running.

I'd vote for my favorite game of all time, San Andreas. An absolute amazing game with the shittiest graphics.
Maybe a legit reboot of Tony Hawks pro skater, the first couple ones. Those were fun.
    Also ESPN 2k5

Tenchu remade as an open world rpg
  • bizmarkiefaderbizmarkiefader San Francisco
@Knighttowel99 Isn't that basically Dark Souls?

Yes! a legitimately great reboot of the Tony Hawk series. Online multiplayer could be fucking amazing. Like, make that happen already.

@bizmark. I've never played dark souls. Now I'll have to. After I posted I realized I was envisioning Assassin's Creed
  • bizmarkiefaderbizmarkiefader San Francisco
@Knightowel99 It's not necessarily open world in the GTA/Saints Row picking up missions kinda sense but its a big continuous environment where you can go anywhere you can see in the distance and you pick where you want to go. The combat and approach always felt very Tenchu to me, you should check it out. I got it on a Steam sale for like 5 bucks.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.  Both were great games (although the second wasn't as good as the first).  Outside of Mass Effect I haven't really played a sci-fi RPG quite as in-depth on xbox.

I guess I'd actually like a sequel but at this point might as well be a reboot of the series: Golden Sun, an enjoyable little RPG series for game boy and DS. I think some GameCube games like Mario Sunshine had some nice ideas that were just executed poorly and could do with a reboot. I wish they'd reboot Paper Mario and stop whatever nonsense direction they've been taking with that series.

    "Orbit established.  Scanning."

This was the first game that I really, really felt triumphant when I completed it and destroyed the Uhlek (?) brain-world and figured out how to save Arth.

(The second was Revenge of Shinobi)

Yeah? Well, y'know... that's just like uh... your opinion, man.

@OldGriswold Starflight above all else. Such an underrated game.
