Yep, this blows! Was watching Last of the Mohicans the other day and remembered how much I loved it...I smell another commission coming!!!!

General question for everyone, what's your fav DDL film? Mine is Last of the Mohicans, with Gangs of New York a close 2nd.

Translation: Daniel Day Lewis's next movie will be about a man adjusting to life after retirement.

It would be easy to argue that he has been retired from Movies for a while, except that he just made Phantom Thread. I think his extreme method acting has finally taken its toll, hearing how he was mentally after Gangs of New York was crazy and makes the performance better.

I really like his performance for "In the Name of the Father" but I haven't seen it in years to know if it holds up.

He's one of those weirdly mannered and overwrought actors that I dislike - in the pile with Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and Calculon. He can go - that old timey ACTING is tiresome to watch.

  • it really is a toss-up between whether I like his performance as Daniel Plainview or Bill the Butcher more. TWBB is definitely the better movie of the two, but his turn as Bill is just terrifying and fascinating to watch. The man brought Lincoln back from the dead, to boot.

He'll definitely be missed, as he always is, but I won't be surprised if he comes back to do his next last film a decade from now.

It doesn't matter much to me because at the rate he makes movies I figure I won't  live long enough to see many of his movies at his current rate.

I've seen seven of his films so far.

I can't deny DDL's results; he's an incredible actor and in many fantastic movies; but I cringe so hard at a lot of the method acting stories I've heard about him.

I'm always reminded of that story about Dustin Hoffman staying up for 72 hours...

A showbiz story involves his collaboration with Laurence Olivier on the 1976 film Marathon Man. Upon being asked by his co-star how a previous scene had gone, one in which Hoffmann’s character had supposedly stayed up for three days, Hoffmann admitted that he too had not slept for 72 hours to achieve emotional verisimilitude. “My dear boy,” replied Olivier smoothly, “why don’t you just try acting?”

I hope he comes back every time PTA decides he's ideal for a role.

Calculon is the greatest actor ever! how dare you speak ill to a man with a career spanning 2 millennia. The man never had to do a second-take in his life!

  • I find his character in Gangs of New York one of the most facinating characters I've ever seen.

They just skipped to take 3 or 4 :p
  • Oh my God. I don't even know where to begin to decide his "best" performance. How do you even compare any of his work to one another and narrow it down to one performance and single it out as your favorite?
(I'm not asking you that in a derogatory way, I truly don't even know where to begin.)
I could easily say Daniel Plainview, but how can I not mention Christie Brown? Or Lincoln? Or Hawkeye? Or Bill the Butcher? This guy is truly a treasure, and it breaks my heart his next film will be his last. I need to go back and revisit his filmography again. Haven't seen "My beautiful Launderette", "In the Name of the Father," "The Boxer," "The Crucible," "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" or "The Age of Innocence."

i'll never forget when the internet gave us the poster art for Lincoln in 2011 and sending it to my buddy.. 'yeah just give him the Oscar already!'

his last film will be quite a holiday gift.. especially since it's with PTA.

He'll do one more movie in 20 years time, and no matter how terrible it is, they'll give him the Oscar to make him the outright record holder for male wins. He's already the only guy with three Best Actor awards, but I think there are two others who have three from a mixture of the two acting categories.

  • @amyja89 He's got one more movie with PTA to come out about London Fashion, which sounds dull as shit but i'm sure it'll blow me away so he's going to be a contender for the 4th oscar anyway
