I think it would have been far better had they done El's arc over a couple episodes or at least split this episode up. Fully removing us from Hawkins for an entire episode, especially after the intense ending to the previous one, just seemed to put the brakes on. Felt like a TWD filler almost.
In the middle of this and it's the worst episode of either season by a lot so far. I could not give less of a shit about 8 and her storyline so go take away from a runaway train so far to this clunker is really draining momentum away. Considering skipping the rest if it's just this storyline the entire time. Ugh I have a strong visceral reaction against this so far
Finished. It wasn't Objectively bad as an episode of television. But we get mad at The Walking Dead when it does this s*** every season. It completely sucked the momentum and tension out of a runaway downhill train that was the rest of the season so far.
This episode is the best case scenario for The Walking Dead flashback episode. This is easily the worst Stranger Things episode but on a scale isn't a bad episode of TV it just doesn't fit the winning streak of this show.

i imagine they’re going to explore these other kids in future seasons and they needed an establishing episode. Yea it was boring, but I preferred this instead of it being drawn throughout the season.
I liked it for a release from all the drama of the show. It makes me more excited for season 3. They were really odd. If I'm being honest.... I didn't like it at first but after looking into it I saw why it was necessary. It was nice to see their world get bigger too.
Is this just a way for them to use the ideas they had when they wanted this to be an anthology instead of a continuation? I'm really glad we didn't get a full season of these characters

Well really only one of the characters was important. The surrounding characters were just “color” for her.

I guess, but none of it mattered at all past El learning to focus her rage or whatever which can be told a million different ways. After finishing the season looking back on this episode it's just bad and super out of place.

Without knowing the “big” picture it’s hard to say that it didn’t matter. We got introduced to a new character that has super powers that could be used in the future. We saw that Elle/Jane was very much influenced by her surroundings and that if she had the same turnout as 8 she may have been VERY dangerous. Also without Elle seeing a different side of things with someone like her, her character growth could have been stunted. These are just MHO of course.
I thought this ep felt super out of place too. I didn't like it for the most part which is too bad because it was an important episode. It was El's coming of age moment and it introduced us to 8, who I am guessing will play a role in future season (this last part kind of scares me actually.) All that said, I loved seeing Pruitt Taylor Vince who was AWESOME in The Devil's Candy, one of my favorite horror films of late.
This episode seemed fine on first watch, until the end of the season when looking back, this is certainly the episode that could of been cut to keep it the same length as last season.
It wasn't the best episode of the season, but it doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting on the internet. It did so much to answer old questions and present new ones. Eleven meets Momma and deciphers her weird gibberish, learns her own origin, and gets info to find Kali. Eleven sees all the files on the similar missing persons cases which reinforces the idea that there are more test subjects. We get the explanation of Kali's different powers. El gets a power boost and some anger fuel from Kali. Dr. Brenner might still be alive. All this, plus actually leaving Hawkins, which is almost never done. You can't have a world-ending threat level and stay in a town made up of 90% pumpkin patches.
If the argument is that "It could have been spread out more", then that's a fine opinion. I disagree personally because it happened while the rest of the crew was in danger. It heightened the suspense. I feel that sprinkling this story in the other episodes could have detracted from the other character arcs. That's just me though.
I agree, it answered a lot of questions, that we didn't need answering, and takes away from the sharpness of the show.
You didn't need to know that there were others out there, and that they can have different powers? You didn't need to know Eleven's origin? You didn't need proof that Terry Ives was right about having a baby that was taken away?

Certainly don't need to know there are people with different powers. We already know Eleven's origin. We already knew Terry Ives was right.

We aren't watching season 1 again .
I partially agree with you on this. Yes season 1 basically showed Terry Ives was right and we knew the majority of Eleven's origin but I think them tying in number 8 is going to play a role in future seasons. It's clear that the Duffer brothers wanted to have some kind of story where Eleven learns to harness her powers which my personal opinion works.
Knowing how much it took out of Eleven just to "kill" the demogorgon at the end of season 1 do you think it would work as well at the end of season 2 had she not learned what she did from Kali?
I enjoyed the Empire Strikes Back homage enough to overlook it taking me out of the action. A spiritual shell of a parental figure sends her in a journey...she gets trained, to the point of trying to move a large object. Except she’s training with someone on the dark side...she actually passes her test in the cave by not giving in to fear and hate. She has a vision of her friends in danger and leaves to rescue them.
I accidentally watched episode 7 before episode 6, and that order worked out pretty well. It meant that the big cliff-hanger ending from episode 6 wasn’t hanging over 11’s adventures. It also meant that 11’s roadtrip was bookended by Nancy and Jonathon’s roadtrip from episodes 5-6, which sorta worked for me totally. And it meant that in the “its a trap” sequence, I only knew as much as 11 did and was intrigued by that mystery.
I did feel that Kali and her crew were more there as set-up for future seasons than as necessary parts to 11’s arc. It was necessary for 11 to do something and talk to somebody, and I do think that she’ll be mulling over the conversations with Kali going forward. The annoying part of a lot of the episode 7 content is that it is just left hanging rather than paying off in this season. But it probably will pay off down the road.
I hope future seasons don’t revolve around Kali, getting the new mutants gang back together, or a search for a greater truth. I rewatched Logan, and that is essentially the same plot.
