The Terror (spoilers)

I thought we could use a thread where we could discuss spoilers about this fantastic, bleak, frightening, amazing show. That said - tonight's episode was a game changer!  I did not think Captain Franklin would be taken so soon. I was in shock when the bear took him down the ladder.

The more I watch, the more I just get a pit in my stomach out of dread of what is coming for the rest of the men. It's a rare show that affects me in this way.  I don't think I've felt like this since Lost.

Riperoni Ciarán Hinds yet again, dude should stay out of the north, the cold weather just shortens his lifespan in every show.  I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised with his early out given that he has the “and also starring” credit, this was always going to be a Jared Harris show.

If we ever get a full shot of the Tuunbaq I hope it doesn’t just look like a big bad CGI polar bear, not showing the monster fully is probably a good idea.

Some behind the scenes knowledge, the events of the tv show have actually been changed significantly in places from the book due to the discovery of the real life wrecks of the expedition a few years ago. That said I’ve never read the book so I don’t know what those changes will be.

Fantastic episode. Dark, bleak, creepy and the ending was so jarring. I’m hooked.

    ***SPOILERS***

Holy shit last night's episode was bad the fuck ass.  I can't believe they offed Mance Rayder so quickly!

Yesterday I got way down a rabbit hole on the Terror.

1st off I read about how not too long ago they discovered the ship and it was a huge fucking deal in the world of archeology, a guilty pleasure of mine.  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/12/hms-terror-wreck-found-arctic-nearly-170-years-northwest-passage-attempt

Then I wondered if being in the miserable conditions...lack of sun, lack of normal days/nights could cause people in the arctic region to go mad. So I googled "arctic madness" and voila - "Piblokto"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piblokto

Next up was a walk down the lane of "Inuit Mythological Monsters"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Inuit_legendary_creatures

Followed of course by checking out pics of this sweet grocery store on King William Island https://tinyurl.com/y7cqvvrt

Then I discovered how the actress that plays Lady Silence, Nive Nielson, is in a band: "Nive & The Deer Children"

Finally I rounded it all off by educating myself on the gruesome fact that cannibalism occurs in stages.  The final stage is called "end stage cannibalism", when the poor souls crack bones in half to get after the marrow inside.  https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/franklins-doomed-arctic-expedition-ended-gruesome-cannibalism-180956054/ ;  Researchers in the 80s-90s discovered the bones of the Terror & Erebus crew members and they had knife marks and were broken in half.

So when I watched last night with the cannibalism knowledge in the back of my head, I noticed a heavy motif focusing on food, knives and utensils.  The show has had a heavy motif on food from the get go to foreshadow what's to come.  It's gonna get gross.  The gore in last night's few scenes with "the bear" confirmed this show is not going to pull punches when it comes to gore.

The cool thing about the book was the way it presented a possible story that stitches together the strange but known elements of the expedition's demise - making the supernatural elements all the more compelling. With the discovery of the Terror so far from it's expected resting place I wonder if, as you say, the show will add to the historical fiction to include those discoveries. This would be a great surprise, having loved the book, and largely knowing what to expect.

The story has been somewhat changed from the book to reflect the new discoveries of the expedition.

Posting this here - it might be a *little* spoilery given the accompanying monologue:

Last night's episode was brutal.  Watching Hickey getting the lashing was really almost unbearable.  I really disliked Crozier in that moment.  Hickey may have deserved punishment for his wrongdoing, but nothing that severe.  Actually, the idea of a lashing as a punishment (or for any other reason), even just one singular lashing, is so cringe-worthy to me that I just can't watch any scenes that feature it.

Here's my question though:  when they found the man who had been sliced in half, who put the two halves together so that the man was standing upright (or at a slight lean forward)?  If the creature sliced his torso from his lower half, fine... but did he pick him up with both claws and gently rest the upper half perfectly in position?  Doubtful.

Also - was that tobacco/snuff that Hickey found in the pouch on his hammock when he returned after being treated?  Who do we think left it for him... Crozier?  His ex-hookup?

I liked Mrs. Franklin confronting the men about the expedition being trapped on the ice.  I balked though when the one man said that if they don't hear from them by 1850, they'd act.  Uh, that's two more years!

The implication in episode was that either the monster was in fact capable of the precision necessary to surgical cut two men in half and then align them back together as a whole, or that Lady Silence was assisting it.

Really fantastic episode.  Jared Harris is just soooo good.  I found a podcast that is rather comical but does a decent job covering the show. It’s called the double P podcast.

Thanks @Elisa!  I found one that is just called The Terror podcast.  It's done by Electric Streams Media.  It's pretty good, but nowhere near as good as Jim & Aron would do.

I listened to that pod too but I didn’t like the way they kinda blamed everything on Greta Scacchi’s character.

I agree!  I'm secretly hoping they'll do a Bald Move TV podcast on it.  I'd love to hear their thoughts.

Jarid Harris was F'ING AMZING in that final scene of him getting ready to detox himself!! His tone of voice, expressions, everything he did so perfectly sold that scene for me. Hard to find the words!!

He’s so talented and excels in pretty much every role he plays.  He had always been Lane Pryce to me (Mad Men  ) but after this role, that might change.  He’s brilliant.  The face acting he did last night was in another level.  You could read every emotion.  If he hadn’t have spoken, you would have been able to guess what he was feeling.

That scene with the bear/spirit demon (I guess?) chasing Blanky up to the crows nest was soooooo frightening!

I could image the smell the alcohol stink on his breath!

Our first real view of the Tuunbaq! I'm glad they didn't make it overly supernatural looking. For me, in some ways, it's just as terrifying as a dire-bear than an otherworldly looking creator.

And yes, great action scene and good thinking by Blanky to throw the oil!! The way they shot that, the hit on the Tuunbaq was palpable in my living room!

I broke down and did it.  I got the 5.99/mo AMC Premiere upgrade.  I watched episode 6 "A Mercy" last night.....holy....fuck....

I'm gonna binge the shit out of this show and then cancel the AMC Premiere.
    MichelleElisa
  • MichelleMichelle California
Wait - you can binge the entire season if you get AMC Premiere???  :astonished:

I may have to do that.  It's not like there's a weekly podcast I listen to that accompanies it.  There *was*, but after the third episode their production failed and they haven't updated for the past couple of episodes.

    Thanks for the tip, @cdrive!

  • I couldn't resist and finished up The Terror last night. This show will easily make my Top 10 of the year. Fantastic ensemble acting, cinematography, sound design, score. Damn fine work and tense AF. Highly recommended.
