Roseanne S10E07 "Go Cubs" *WARNING SPOILERS* *LEFTIST RANT*

russkellyrusskelly Indianapolis
This episode was hot garbage. Roseanne is spying on her new neighbors. Her new neighbors are Muslim. She thinks they are terrorists because they have a shitload of fertilizer in their yard. Roseanne and Jackie have this basic ass discussion about race. None of the dialogue brings anything new to the topic of race. Also, there are black characters in the scene that are friends with Roseanne, therefore Roseanne isn't racist despite saying some really ignorant shit. Cut to Dan and his business partner in the Mexican restaurant where Becky works. They meet a guy they made a construction bid with. That guy said Dan and his partner were underbid. Dan says, "Are you using illegals?" The dude just leaves. Dan's partner is black, therefore Dan is not racist. Now they are back at the house and Roseanne and Dan are having this horseshit discussion about "illegals" and how they are stealing jobs and because of this, the hardworking middle class suffers. (This is bullshit. this is some shit dreamed up by conservatives to blame people of color for the hardships of the white middle class and the actual fault is with deregulation and corporate greed.) So then, Roseanne's wifi goes out and they go over to the Muslim neighbors' house to ask them to use their password. The couple let's them. Near the end of the episode Roseanne sees the Muslim woman at the grocery store. The Muslim woman's EBT card doesn't have the funds to cover her groceries. Roseanne saves the day by lending her the money, but not before the cashier says some very racist shit to her. After all that transpired in this episode, they made the minimum wage working cashier the big racist bad guy and they turn Roseanne into this inclusive savior. This is the ultimate cop out punch down and I was stunned by this. The shit about "illegals" really set me off. I can't believe this is still a thing that people think is true. Now, I understand Roseanne is a Trump supporter in real life, so I know what I'm getting myself into, but this episode can seriously  GFI. I am usually slow to get offended, but this got me in a bad way. I'm so tired of this fake news shit turning decent hard working people into racists so that the rich and super rich can make a few extra bucks. Also, I understand we are a big tent here and if people disagree and wish to say so, that's fine. I just wanted to get this off my chest and this is really the only outlet that I deemed safe to do it. Not trying to start anything. I love you guys. I'll see you in another thread or on twitch or youtube  soon.
xoxo, Russ.

lol for spoiler warning for Roseanne...

  • I don't think they represent decent hard working people - I think you can leave the 'decent' out of the description.  They represent exactly who elected Trump.  It wasn't economics (I think Trump voters had a greater average income and wealth), it was xenophobia and racism.

Let's all just agree not to watch - I haven't yet, and won't.

  • I'm glad Rosanne did not hold a nostalgic place in my heart, so I felt no desire to watch these new ones. Sounds like that was a blessing.

Also, I can't think about Rosanne without thinking about her beautiful singing voice. What a patriot.

I'm still new and getting my feel around here but I think this applies to a degree.

I grew up in a town of 2000 people in NY and my dad hires illegal immigrants. My dad doesn't vote and doesn't watch TV except the weather channel  and Walker Texas Ranger. I'm not kidding.

First off, they were always awesome, didn't speak a lick of English, and worked their fucking asses off.

We're talking 6am to 6pm or later, Monday - Saturday. Not many people can handle that schedule. Oh and the catch is, my father owns a septic cleaning business and a portable toilet business (and basically any job he can make money), applications don't fly in the door.

No one in town ever cared, and it was a pretty conservative town. They weren't Mexican either, they were from Guatamala and went home twice a year to see their families.

Roseanne is playing to people like GOB Bluth, when he asks Michael, "What, I can't swing a hammer?" And then when Michael hands it over, he backs away and scoffs at the hard work.

Have to say I’m disappointed John Goodman is going along with a storyline like that.

EXACTLY! Laurie Metcalf too! It’d be different if they had something to say. I don’t mind the idea of a right leaning or libertarian protagonist. So long if you have some new ideas, but it’s the same tired junk.

The problem I have with new Roseanne is that they’ve completely changed her character. Old Roseanne wouldn’t give a shit about living next door to Muslims and would have been out there defending them from day one.

When Dan and Roseanne were talking about “illegals” they sounded upset but still kind of sympathetic towards them. It wasn’t just “they took our jobs” - they said something about them being desperate and they could clearly understand why they would work for less, even though they were not happy about it. And the reality is, people ARE being shoved out of properly paid work in favour of exploiting and abusing those who will do it for less for whatever reason (not necessarily illegal immigrants, but the move toward casualisation of the workforce is a huge problem in the Western world and is an easy way for businesses to get rid of higher paid experienced staff in favour of someone cheaper. Then there’s the massive loss of manufacturing to send it overseas and exploit people in other countries.) It’s not the fault of those who will do it for less, but it still happens. The fault is with the friend who is taking advantage of people and treating them badly (paying them less than they should get for this work) to get a cheap job done.

I think the racist checkout chick was actually pretty realistic. We all know that shit does go on all the time - ask anyone who isn’t white. I’m not even American, but there’s one particular checkout chick at our local supermarket who my daughter hates because of the way she talks to her Indian work colleague in front of customers. i mean, working/lower class whites are largely your core voting base for Trump (and other countries’ Trump equivalents), so I’m sure not getting outraged on their behalf because one was an arsehole on a sitcom.

I am disappointed at the monster Roseanne (the actress) has become, and what she has done to Roseanne (the character), but I think this was your pretty standard “Oh look, some people are different and that’s okay” lame sitcom plot and I don’t really get the outrage.

Why on earth should anyone HAVE to handle a 6 day 12+ hour work schedule? That is blatant exploitation of people and it astonishes me that you seem pretty proud that your father does that.

  • Side note: I’m under the impression that “leftist” is now the derogatory term for liberal/democrats. Basically the alt-right equivalent; and we do have an equivalent. I kind of like the term because it now allows us to separate the extreme fringe of liberals from the normal/moderate liberal.

  • DeeDee Adelaide
@gguenot What exactly is the alt right equivalent of the left? I can’t think of anything they are doing or saying that is the equivalent to the latest rise of neo-Nazism.

Oh no, I'm not proud of that at all. It's absolutely ridiculous, but that was how he was raised, on a chicken farm where that came first, and school second.

I did it for a year and half before I tapped out, but he paid well, first 40 hours on the books, everything over that in cash. He's had a handful of guys doing it for over 20 years now.

I'm not defending his business tactics but he was also open 24 hours a day. I once pumped a septic Thanksgiving morning, went home to relax and have dinner, and went out and did it again that night.

That last part felt like an old man story, but people tend to shit a lot around the holidays and clog their toliet systems and my dad was the guy to call.

@MattyWeaves Oh, okay - sorry, I misunderstood the point your were making. I’m hyper sensitive to exploitation of workers (my work comes across it a lot), so I tend to go off about it pretty easily.

For the extreme center everything has to have an equally bad left and right. The "horseshoe theory" says socialists are just as bad as the alt right because they both are both disagree with me and some of them are rude in twitter mentions.

I agree that we dont have a true equivalent of neo-Nazism, but we do have an extremist side. There is a growing movement of violence against certain types of speech. There have been college professors who have had their speech shut down violently because they dare bring up topics of discussion like gender pronouns and trans issues-- that need to be discussed in a healthy way. These are liberal, democrat-Hillary/Bernie-voting professors that are being silenced because some on the left deem their thoughts hateful. And it isnt a discussion on trans issues like the alt right is having. Its discussions like-- should a trans woman be able to fight in boxing or the UFC and beat the shit out of ciswomen. Because that has actually happened.

Another example-- I think Ben Shapiro is a piece of shit. But he was invited by a college to debate a LIBERAL/DEMOCRATIC professor. The protests got so violent that both he and the female liberal professor had to be escorted out and once outside, the liberal professor was attacked and beaten because it was assumed that she was with Shapiro.

This is embarrassingly frustrating to hear as a liberal because I believe no speech should be silence just because you disagree with the subject matter. So, again, I'm glad to hear there is a term, "leftist" that I can say I'm not a part of.

You don't have to give every dipshit alt-righter a mic and an audience. No-platforming is not the same thing as censorship and people speaking out against their universities bringing in hateful shitheads is free speech.

100% agree, people speaking out against Universities bringing controversial people to speak/debate is their free speech. Violence isnt free speech though.

That's what I came here to say.  I don't know why I should expect him to be any kind of way in terms of his politics, but I certainly won't ever again be as enthusiastic to talk about all his great work.  It is what it is.

Blackish get an episode indefinitely shelved because they focus on the taking a knee debate, but Roseanne is free to spout this utter garbage to millions. Cool great job.

I agree with your points about the extreme on the left.  I think any position that closes itself off entirely to debate is a problem, as with the left's penchant for silencing or shouting down speech they disagree with instead of doing the hard work of refuting it.  In their defense of civil liberties, they deny civil liberties, etc.  But I was commenting mainly to ask about that Ben Shapiro story.  Do you have a source for that, because googling "Ben Shapiro College Protest" kicks back WAAAY too many results and I can't find the one you referenced.
  • I wonder if both "alt" extremes are actually just bullies that found a free pass for being assholes.

I mean, alt-right people may hate POC, but maybe they just really love the license it gives them to be total abusive jerks and have other people root them on.

Alt-left people may really hate it when someone accidentally commits a micro-aggression, but maybe they just really love attacking some little old lady because she asks a blind person if they'll be 'seeing' their mother on Mother's Day without thinking through the vision bias of the comment.  They also get cheered on by (sometimes even more mainstream and reasonable) people.

I think some people are just great at finding excuses to be assholes.

Yeah, I’m really not here for this idea that both sides are as bad as each other, or even that there is some kind of debate to be had. On one end you’ve got Tumblrinas calling out cosmetics companies for naming an eyeshadow Gypsy and complaining about pussy hats being transphobic and on the other you’ve got actual fucking white supremacists.

That was my thought too. I don't really know much about his politics or him (outside of a handful of interviews) but I've always respected the hell out of him.
