Rolling Stones top 50 comedies of the 21st century

edited June 12 in Movies
So Rolling Stones put out a list of the top comedies in the 21st century.  Obviously there is going to be a lot of disagreements with this but I think it's absolutely insane that Super Troopers was not in this list along with Wedding Crashers.  Most insane though is the fact that Zombieland is not on this list.  I will admit half of these movies I've never seen or even heard of.  Any other comedies that people think should be on this last that aren't....

I've only seen 16 of those, comedy tends to be the genre I pass on for some reason.

I've only seen 18 of them so I'm not that far off from you. I definitely enjoy a good comedy movie but I feel like a lot of these don't exactly fit as a comedy movie as the first classification. Lots of these I feel are dramas 1st and have comedic elements to it.

I've seen 34 of them and I still think the list is shit. It seems like a lot of recency bias.

    My take aways...

°Ladybird shouldn't be on this list much less at sixteen.

°American Psycho is not a comedy to me.

°Someone is a massive Wes Anderson fan.

°Everybody Wants Some was a disappointment to me, shouldn't have been billed as a spiritual sequel to Dazed.

°What We Do in the Shadows should be top three.

°The 40 Year Old Virgin doesn't hold up for me.

What We Do In The Shadows is one of the best movies ever! I am in love with it!

There are way too movies on this list that are headscratchers. Like American Psycho. Are ehere dark comedy moments? Yes. Is it a comedy? Absolutely not.

I am not mad about Best in Show being number 1 though. Probably wouldn't be my number 1 pick but damn it's a hilarious movie!

    I've seen 31/50

I've seen 33.  I'm very okay with Best In Show being #1.

Agreed with @letrbuck2006 that some of these are more drama than comedy.  Like 24 hour party people.

  • I’ve seen 32 and a few are “on my list” to see. I do agree with @letrbuck2006 that Super Troopers should have made the list. I pay less attention to the “number” and more attention to what actually made it. This list does have a good bit of diversity as far as type of comedy, but I does seem to be abscent of at least “one” thing....

i've seen about half of the movies on this list. a few are head scratchers. A couple off the top of my head that should have made the list are Old School, The Hangover and i always considered Lost in Translation a comedy and if it is it should be on this list.

also as personal Guilty Pleasure This is the End would have made my list. for what thy tried to do with it i think is was a new concept and very funny.

The original Hangover should be on there somewhere

Some other ones I didn't see on the list that could have been:

    Zoolander
    A Mighty Wind
    Walk Hard
    I Love You, Man
    MacGruber
    Talladega Nights

Spot on.  Agree 100% percent about Old School and The Hangover.  I'm actually quite disappointed in myself I didn't even think about either of those.

  • If American Psycho and Punch Drunk Love can make top 50 comedies, then Wolf of Wall Street should've also made it. I love Coen brothers movies, but I wasn't a fan of Hail Caesar. That definitely should get the boot.

Weird list. Really weird list. I will say that the ones that I "needed to be there" were, but either some of the movies I haven't seen are WAY better than they look or there are some huge flaws. Also, the South Park movie was way funnier than Team America (oh, was that in the 90s though?). Bridesmaids was very good, but #3? Really? Knocked up doesn't make a ton of sense to me either similarly. I've never really been a 40 Year Old Virgin or Step Brothers guy, and a lot more minor 'ehs' like that where I get it, people love those movies, just not for me. I think I can give them latitude on American Psycho, but Punch Drunk Love isn't a comedy. Also, further proof that They Came Together is WAY underrated. Easily a top 10 comedy of the 21st in my book. Probably top 5 honestly.

That said, they put on the ones that I really needed to be there. Wet Hot American Summer, check. Royal Tenenbaums, check. State and Main was a super pleasant surprise. I love that movie, and never would have expected it to pop up. Kind of thought it was lost to time. I've probably seen somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the list (EDIT: just counted and it turns out I've seen 26) and overall I'm happy. I know that there is always a give and take with these things, but there are some definite head scratchers. A lot of it comes down to taste and it feels like I'm about 30-50% in step with whoever made this. Ultimately, I was really happy for some good agreements and a couple of great surprises, and I definitely won't argue with Best in Show at #1. That was pretty cool to see. In my book it's a fine list all in all.

I've seen 9 out of the 50.  I also tend to go for dramas or big epic movies rather than comedies, but will also say that a lot of the movies on this list just never appealed to me or piqued my interest.   I'll agree that The Hangover and Zoolander should have been on this list and that American Psycho and Hail Caesar should not have been.  I would have also added Girls Trip to the list.  That movie was *hilarious*.

I definitely agree that Zoolander should have made the cut. That is in the top 5 (maybe 3) of most I've ever laughed in a movie theater. Definitely the awesomest "be a part of a focus group" I ever did. I was more luke warm on the Hangover personally, but I get it.

Yeah what is considered a comedy is key. So many of these movies I personally would not consider a comedy. Best in show is fine at number one. Borat, Jackass, and Superbad should be in the top ten.

After thinking a little more, one film that i can't believe i forgot about but IMO should absolutely be on this list is 50/50 that movie to me is excellent. tackling that subject matter and setting it to a comedy while still having serious beats was very impressive including JGL performance as well as Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen.

I’ve seen 29. That is a weird list. I want to say Best In Show shouldn’t be number 1, but I really love that film and it’s one of the few I can watch over and over. And I can’t really think of any I would put ahead of it.

    I've seen 31.

-I'll have to check out In The Loop. The premise seems interesting and I love Veep.

-Like others said, 40 YO Virgin is wayyyyyyyy too high on this list.

-I would say Lady Bird is too high, but I have a media allergy to Greta Gerwig so I'm biased.

-The World's End should not be on this list. Wright already got enough love, anyway.

-I Heart Huckabees is way too low. Should be top 20, at least.

-I'm bummed that I Love You, Man and Zoolander didn't make the list. Shame on you, list makers.

Comedy is so subjective that even if I agreed with every movie on this list, I'd totally understand why people wouldn't. I know all art is subjective, but there are some forms that are almost universally liked. I can only think of a handful of comedies that fall into that category.
  • If lady bird and adaptation are "comedies" get out should have been on this list, top 20 at least
    Murderbear
  • Deadpool could legitimately be on this list

I hate lists like this because comedy is subjective but will now take my time to bitch about it.

I don't usually like dumb comedies but I've seen Talladega Nights a million times and it will Shawashank me today if I come across it flipping channels. It's not on the list?

High Fidelity should be higher. Jack Black before he gave us too much Jack Black.

Sideways is a comedy? Thought it was a drama with a few funny moments. If it is a comedy it should be higher because of the Giamatti factor.
Funny note about the movie. His father was Bart Giamatti, commissioner of baseball. They used a real father-son picture in the movie. Watched the movie with a sports nut who didn't know the actor and he yelled out "Is that a picture of Bart Giamatti?"

Yeah, it's been a while since I watched it. I remember it being VERY awkward, given the plot but I don't really remember laughing much. Great movie though!

It's easily the funniest movie Martin Scorsese has made, and I'd already put Casino, The Departed, and Goodfellas as funnier than at least half of this list. Only thing I can give it real credit for is putting In The Loop so high up. That shit is golden.

Is The Grand on the list? If not, this list can go fuck itself. Also, if you haven't seen The Grand, you can go fu... Just kidding. Seriously though, do yourself a favor and track down The Grand. It's insane how criminally unknown this movie is.

27, I saw In Bruges last night. That movie is the darkest comedy ever. I saw Ladybird a week ago, I thought it was great but it was light on the haha. Rolling Stone is on the ropes.
  • Another one that I thought of that belongs on this list is Dodgeball.  While it's certainly not near the top of the list, it definitely belongs in the top 50 for the 21st century.

Here is a list I can get behind. James Bond movies ranked. My favorite is From Russia With Love. I hope it’s number one. This list has made want to go back and check out some of the ones I passed on over the years. I’m watching Spectre right now. It isn’t as bad as I thought. Set DVR to record one tomorrow morning. Anyway it’s on Looper channel on YouTube.
