Maybe not for the quality of movies, but for being so wrapped up in them my mind wanders to 96, 97 and 98 because that was when I was working at a theater and probably was there as much as I was at home between working there and seeing basically every movie that came through the place. In the wake of losing free reign of the place and just being able to walk in the door and find a seat my movie going has diminished to maybe a couple of times a year, and even at home I just don't keep up with movies in general nearly like I did in my late teens and early 20s.

Anyhoo, looking over a list of movies from 97 and seeing Event Horizon makes me smile, thinking of when my buddy literally scared a group of kids who were being dicks out of the theater by cranking the volume of the movie.
    LA Confidential
    The Game
Gattaca (which I walked out of the first time thinking I hated it, but luckily gave another chance to later and totally love it)
Starship Troopers (which I have to remind my buddy that he was going to write a rock opera about featuring songs like "Don't Talk About Carmen That Way!" )
The Man Who Knew Too LIttle
    Face/Off
    Fifth Element
Austin Powers (which was a ton of fun until the constant referencing just murdered it bloody)
I Know What You Did Last Summer (yeah, yeah, yeah, it was fun)
    Good Will Hunting
    Jackie Brown
    the Rainmaker

    1996:
    Beautiful Girls
Down Periscope (which I've actually never seen, but always chuckle at the title because it became the code word for joking about a break room felatio scandal at the theater)
    Fargo
Primal Fear (not the best movie, but fun)
    Brain Candy
Mulholland Falls (never, NEVER watch this movie while you're quitting smoking)
    the Cable Guy
    That Thing You Do
    Scream

    1998:
    Half Baked
    The Zero Effect
the Replacement Killers (I saw this movie 5 times in the theater)
    Big Lebowski
The Big Hit (which is terrible, and awesome and I saw it 5 times in theaters)
    Bulworth
    the Opposite of Sex
    the Truman Show
    Out of Sight
There's Something About Mary (though I honestly prefer Outside Providence if we're doing the Farellys)
    Disturbing Behavior
    Baseketball
Rounders (my buddy once took 3 ambien and got in an argument with Ed Norton on a Rounders poster on his wall)
    Ronin
    Rushmore
    Apt Pupil
    Pleasantville
The Waterboy (I saw this movie 9 times in theaters, my personal best)
Babe: Pig in the City (better than the first one, and I'll die on that hill)

So, ultimately not the best set of years and I wonder how some of these movies (many of which I haven't seen in 20 years) hold up (in some cases I really don't need to wonder), but man those were fun times and there were some real legit gems in there.

I'm voting for '89 through '98.  I can't pick just one year.  There are too many good movies from then.  Next to '85 through '87, this is my next favorite time for movies:

    When Harry Met Sally
    Sleepless in Seattle
    Forrest Gump
    You've Got Mail
    Titanic
    Fargo
    Independence Day
    Casino
    Toy Story
    Schindler's List
    What's Eating Gilbert Grape
    ..and so many others.

  • 1995 for me

    Braveheart
    Heat
    Casino
    Seven
    Toy Story
    The Usual Suspects
    12 Monkeys
    Apollo 13
    Before Sunrise
    The Bridges of Madison County
    Rob Roy
    Friday

    Oh snap. 95 was good.
See also, the less good Babe movie, Things to do in Denver When You're Dead (at least I remember really liking it, but a voice in the back of my head is telling me that it wouldn't have aged well), Mallrats, and Home for the Holidays

1999, easily. I'm surprised no one has said it! I thought it was self-evident, but maybe after a while I had confirmation bias.

Alright, I'ma let you finish, but 1994 was the best year for movies AND music. (I'll post examples later when I have more time!)
