Casino

This movie is on netflix and I just can't stop myself watching it again.  It's a personal opinion, but I think it's better than Goodfellas.  That scene where Pesci's narration is cut off mid-sentence is pretty much my favorite Scorcese scene, mainly because I hate narration.  But the interplay between Pesci and De Niro in this movie, as well as the aforementioned meta scene, makes it work in this movie.  Anyone have any thoughts on it?

I haven’t sat down to watch Casino in years. It’s tough to top Goodfellas - IMO that’s a bold statement to say it’s better ... I do enjoy the fights between ginger and DeNiro and the triangle with James Woods. I’ll have to give it a rewatch soon!
  • I only remeber a few scenes but it’s a good movie.

the blowjob scene and desert scene

I watched it last night, actually. Goodfellas is still better, in my opinion. Casino is great tho.

  • So I listen to KFAN which is Minnesotas sports talk radio. Their morning show is pretty funny.  They brought up this exact conversation talking about Casino being better than Goodfellas.  Has this been discussed on a national level recently or is this just some crazy coincidence?

I think Goodfellas is better. I had a friend who hated the movie so much once it got to the point where a dead man was narrating. That didn't bother me but I still think Goodfellas is the better of the two. It might just be because it has the better soundtrack.

Your friend shouldn't watch Sunset Boulevard.  Or Double Indemnity. Or a lot of noirs.

Casino is my preference as well. It may be the setting of Las Vegas, I just like it more. But you can't go wrong with either one.

I've watched Goodfellas and Casino in the past month (for around the 3rd or 4th time each). It reminded me how much I used to get the scenes in those movies confused with each other, specifically the Joe Pesci scenes and murderrrrr.

Pesci was essentially playing the same character in both movies as far as my memory served. When I rewatched them in the past month I was reminded that he was a bit more smooth and slightly less unhinged in Casino. Of course, one could argue that Tommy Devito (Goodfellas) was just the up and coming version of Nicky Santoro (Casino) working his way up, which would explain why Tommy was far more eager to prove himself and had more of a chip on his shoulder. Nicky was a made man in Casino.

Anyhow, completely unhinged Joe Pesci is my favorite Joe Pesci, so I give Goodfellas the edge.

Yeah just a coincidence...but more like both are examples of a much broader trend of people relishing the opportunity to vociferously buck conventional wisdom.

Casino to me is just so much more cynical than Goodfellas about everything...love, society, and organized crime, too.  I like that.  There's a lot more I could say about why I rank Casino higher, but who really cares?  It's just a great movie.  So is Goodfellas, sure, but I can't ever imagine being in a mood to watch that and, like I said, I'll stop and watch Casino on a whim nearly every time.

Really does sting, huh? I make it a point to listen to it at least once a year just to remind me that no matter how much I love a celebrity, they are all batshit insane and should never be taken seriously under any circumstances.

  • Yeah, I like Casino a lot more than Goodfellas, but both are great.

Holy crap that was awful.  But how does it stack up to the all time atrocity in this category:
