Here is a SUPER DUPER HUGELY embarrassing one: up until maybe 17-18 years ago, I didn’t realize that Alaska was so far North... I didn’t realize it is connected to Canada. I always thought it was connected to Washington state.  >:)

Edited to add: I’m 44 years old LOL!

@CretanBull Just for the record, in England we call it a dummy, not a pacifier.  :D
We call it a dummy too.

  • What a fun thread!

I am sure there are many but the only one I can remember right now was that I was in my late 30s when I learned that hens will lay eggs even if they don't have access to a rooster (city kid here). Everyone else seemed to know that already.

Used to work with a guy who would always say "Nip it in the Butt" instead of "Nip it in the Bud."    He was probably around 50 and was absolutely sure he was right but graciously conceded he was wrong after a quick google search.

    Haha.

We got a pal since high school and she always thought it was “Don’t go, Jason Wonderful. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.”  She ended up marrying a Jason <twilight zone music>

EDIT (listening now): They did Spill the Wine too? WTF? I only really remembered the hook and somehow had it my head that it was a Van Morrison tune.
I think Spill the Wine is by Eric Burdon and the Animals.

Woops, the Isley's covered it in 71, so I thought it was early enough but Burdon and War did it in 70 originally. OK that makes more sense.

There is actually a dialect that goes with "chimbley" (that you Decemberists and a subsequent Google search for cluing me in), and actually the next step of that search also validated "chimley," Not sure where the dialect is present, but that's what the internet says.

For no other reason than it's a really great tune, I will provide the track as a footnote.

Think about it, the only reason Han, Leia and Luke didn’t get cooked for a meal was because of the show of power by C3PO (via Luke). If that had not happened then the Ewoks would have eaten them.

My favourite episode of Everybody Loves Raymond (I know, I know, it’s my comfort watching when I’m sad or tired, shut up) is the one where Robert dates the lady who eats the fly and is obsessed with frogs. I must have seen that episode at least 20 times over the years. I only just realised this year that the joke is she is attracted to Robert because he kind of looks like a bullfrog.

I was looking through my vinyl and saw my Wendy Carlos album. Now, I’ve always been a huge fan of that MOOGy goodness since A Clockwork Orange but it reminded me of this thread and how it was only like a year ago that I found out she was transgender. I remember being like whaaaaaaaaaat and googling pictures. Maybe not so much of a common knowledge thing,  but damn all this time, never knew.

I absolutely LOVE everybody loves Raymond! That episode is funny! I think my favorite episode is the one when Robert gets gored by a Bull in the ass  :D
