  • It's crazy this is the first time Spike Lee has been nominated for Best Director.

Shoutout to Olivia Colman, who I first knew as Mark's crush/girlfriend on the great British sitcom Peep Show. Great to see someone come so far. Also, Black Panther for Best Pic?? I love it but of course it's not going to win.

  • Eighth Grade got robbed. I get you might not put it in best movie but I think it deserved a nom. for best original screenplay and Elsie Fisher being so young and doing quite a nice job maybe deserved an actress nod. I don't really care about the oscars but my vote for movie would be BlacKKKlansmen.

Kind of surprised First Man didn't get a best picture nod, I thought it was a really strong film. And on the flip side I thought Vice was very meh. The acting in it was fantastic though, no issues with the acting noms from Vice.

I’m very biased so I want Roma to win everything

    Go Rami!  :star:

Here are my predictions based on not having seen most of these movies and having no real reason to make them:

    Best Picture:
Roma or A Star is Born.  It should be Roma,  but will be ASiB.  Or maybe they'll announce ASiB, then backtrack to Roma...

Actress in a Leading Role: Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born

Actor in a Leading Role: Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

    Directing:

BlacKkKlansman Spike Lee  or Roma Alfonso Cuarón

Why is Green Book even here?

Actor in a Supporting Role: Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman

Actress in a Supporting Role: Marina de Tavira, Roma

Adapted Screenplay: A Star Is Born

    Original Screenplay: Roma

    Cinematography: Cold War

    Production Design: Black Panther

Costume Design: Mary Queen Of Scots

    Film Editing: Bohemian Rhapsody

    Foreign Language Film: Roma

    Documentary Feature: Minding the Gap

    Documentary Short Subject: End Game

Animated Feature Film: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

    Animated Short Film: Animal Behavior

    Live Action Short Film: Detainment

    Original Score: Isle Of Dogs

Original Song: When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings, Buster Scruggs

    Visual Effects: First Man

Makeup and Hairstyling: Mary Queen of Scots

    Sound Editing: Black Panther

Sound Mixing: A Star Is Born

I love that Bohemian Rhapsody is doing so well, but I honestly didn't expect anything less given how it's done at the other awards ceremonies.

I was pretty surprised at the number of white people up on the stage
  • Also, gotta say:  Gaga and Cooper's performance was pretty darn sexy
  • MichelleMichelle California
I'm gonna have to watch A Star is Born.  I've only heard good things.
  • Re: Queen’s performance...

Is there anything more cringy than watching celebrities watch a rock performance (e.g. during tonight’s Oscars or at the Kennedy Center Honors) when they know they could be on camera in the crowd?

Like... they’re trying to strike that balance of being into it but not *too* into it.

sorry to be a downer, but it was one of the worse Academy Awards in a long time, and that Gaga n Cooper performance was like having to listen to a the Decemberists and Christina Aguilera do a duet

    Bleh, Debbie downer!

I love me some Gaga, but I will say that she went *way* overboard in her tanning sesh.  It's rainy, cold February in Cali, Gaga - we know that's not natural!   But honestly who cares though I guess, the woman can do no wrong.

I hear ya.  You could tell though, when they were doing the aerial shot toward the stage and looking at the stars from behind, that some of them were really into it (fists pumping in the air, swaying their bodies side to side, etc).  I think there were at least some genuine Queen fans in that crowd.

Queen should have had this guy front them tonight (and always) instead of Adam Lambert.  This is Marc Martel.  For the vocals in the movie, they used a mix of Freddie, Rami, and this guy.  I swear, if you close your eyes it's almost like Freddie reincarnated.

Green Book, no thanks. Saved by a couple of endearing performances, but really? In a year with films like Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman and even un-nominated stuff like Sorry To Bother You, you're gonna give the top honour to this cookie cutter 'I'm not racist because I have a black friend' bullshit? Nah, not for me. It's the type of film that is made with the intention of making white people feel better about themselves.

As for Olivia Colman, I SCREAMED. I love her, and The Favourite was the best of the year IMO.

I was kind of surprised that she is considered the lead actress. Wasn't Emma Stone the main character? All the performances were great and I'm glad she won but that just seemed off to me.

Honestly, what makes me want to see The Favourite......

  • Biggest winner...the audience, if we never see another "host" again.

Ha! I didn't watch, but they showed footage on the morning news and that jumped right out at me. It was like "I can't hear the song. Somehow the over-the-topness of that tan has left me deaf." Hollywood is weird, man.

That said, I've always liked Gaga. I don't own the records or anything, but I like her stuff typically when it's put in front of me and she just leaves a good impression. Seems like someone who would be a good role model for the young folks. At least that's the best way I can think to quantify it. Also happy to see Wet Hot American Summer's Bradley Cooper become so successful. I've always liked him too.
