The 80s references

Surprised we haven’t made a thread for all the references. Please copy and paste and add to the list so we have a full one. I’m not too worried about release dates. I think they know they have one more season and want to pay homage to their favourite movies so they may throw in a movie released after the timeline.

Terminator/Rocky 4: Russian dude
miami vice/Pi magnum: hopper
the blob/thing: the upside Monster
day/dawn of the dead: the zombie people

You can also say Dustin in the ducts is a diehard reference too.

  • The Lightsaber clashes in Dusty-Bun and Steve's handshake is another Star Wars reference.

The cool girl's name being "Heather" was surely a nod to Heathers.

Someone help me out with 1 reference.  When the brother & sister were calling each other names back and forth....I felt like that was from a movie but I can't place it.

Also Raiders of the Lost Ark:  wearing the Russian military uniforms as a disguise, nodding while smiling...

My wife caught this one, but the cat clock was from Back to the Future.

    Gremlins: The automatic hammer

  • Anyone mention Wargames?  I seem to recall at the very beginning there are two soldiers who turn two keys.  Billy calling that kid "lard ass" is probably a reference to Stand by Me.

HARD COPY:   CUTTING EDGE seemed like a nod to the classic tabloid news TV show. Even the logo is similar.

  • Ugh, there was one I saw that isn't here but I'm totally spacing at work and cannot remember what it was, and im not watching the whole thing again lol.
  • Technically it's the 70's, but I have a friend who is a Jaws junkie, and she pointed out that the mayors are very similar, and that Hopper's drunken "I can do whatever I want" line is the same as Brody's.
  • My view made it 69 views XD. kojiattwood said:

    Also yeah true, true.

Probably mentioned way back in the 1st season, but the entire concept of the Upside Down and scientists opening a portal to another dimension hearkens back to Stephen King's novella "The Mist"

There was a specific reference to Red Dawn - one of them said they’d just been to see it when talking about the Russians being in their town.

  • I got some the fly vibes from the goo monsters and their eating habits as well.
    kojiattwood
  • Speaking of vibes, I got distinct Evil Dead flashbacks from the fight in the cabin, ditto for Alien with the flayer-thing inside Eleven's leg? And re-watching the finale, I completely missed the Griswold reference!

    The Never Ending Story!
    awookiee
  • Also not 80s, but the whole initial run of Steve, Robin, Dustin, and Erica running around in the base felt like Han, Chewie, Luke, Leia running through the Death Star.
