His Dark Materials

Has BM announced what they will be doing as far as coverage for His Dark Materials? I remember on one of the podcasts a while back it was still up in the air whether or not it would be its own feed or if it would be covered under Bald Move TV feed. Didn’t know if anyone was able to share if they had announced any updates recently.

Cecily and Alexis are doing a full podcast on it. This was mentioned in the recent Empire (Club) podcast a few days ago.

    Is Alexis is Jim's fiancee?
  • JaimieTJaimieT Atlanta, GA
    Jim's? Yes.
  • Kind of excited for this show, haven’t read those books in a while though.

I reread them last year. I'm so pumped! They're much better when you're an atheist lol.

    Woohoo very exciting news!!
  • Haha I loved these books also. So true about atheism.  I can’t wait to see what those motor cycle people look like,  from the last book, in live action.

Yes!  Alexis and I are doing a podcast on it - it will be in the BMTV feed for the first year at least, seeing how it goes.  We're really excited to cover this show, and we will be releasing a pre-podcast covering 2007's The Golden Compass in anticipation at some point today!

That's a great idea! (the movie podcast) Looking forward to that cast.

I haven't read these books and I think I'm going to go in to this one blind.

I'm not sure if this show will fit my interests, but looking forward to the @Cecily & Alexis podcast is enough for me to give it a try.

  • Loved the podcast! Welcome to Bald Move Alexis! It was a great debut, you were delightful.

I didn’t give a fuck about the show, but the podcast did a good job at getting me interested. Looking forward to coverage from the Ladies of Bald Move!

  • I loved these books so much as a kid but haven't re-read them in probably 15 or 20 years (so i feel like i have a good recollection of the world, but a fuzzy recollection of the actual plot) .  People who have read them more recently, do you think it's worth trying to reread at least the golden compass/northern lights before the show starts?

I can say they definitely hold up reading them as an adult. It's hard to know without seeing the show what you should do, though. But they are beautiful books if fantasy is your thing.

I'm pumped for this. My wife loved the books and i enjoyed the 2007 movie. can't wait for the coverage!
  • Haven’t read the books or seen the movie but the trailer and premise intrigues me so I’m definitely gonna watch the series. Don’t have time to read the books but should I watch the movie before the premiere?

I'd say no. It's not great, and it'll almost certainly spoil season 1 arcs.

I'm glad I read this because I was thinking about finding somewhere to stream the movie this weekend because I have zero experience in this world.  Thanks @hisdudeness915 and @JaimieT for bringing this up and sharing your insight on the matter.

I think this is one of the few young adult series that is actually better when you read it as an adult. Unless you were really into theology as a child, a lot of the allusions and stuff like that probably went right over your head.

Do you know how they're breaking it up? I know the original plan, before HBO was involved, was to do the whole trilogy in 8 episodes. I also saw they've renewed it for an 8 episode season two. Any idea if they're doing a book a season?

No, I don't know, and this information might be on Google, but I've been basing this assumption off of the trailers showing book 1 events.

Lived in Oxford my entire life and never read the books. Saw the Nicole Kidman movie years ago and barely remember anything. Maybe it's time for me to get on the bus!

I'm going to check it out based on the strong recommendations here and C&A's solid podcast.

One more question for folks in the know:

My son is 10. Would this be way above the head of a kid that age?
