Parts of it would be (the political/religious stuff). The main through line is adventure though, and this was in the precocious child category of fiction before YA blew up. I'm not very familiar with age 10 so maybe someone else can weigh in on that.
Loving that pilot! McAvoy was killing it as Lord Asriel. Smart of them to get us familiar and rooting for the Gyptians right off the bat. Nice to see they will pull no punches with the Magesterium.

I watched the first episode alone while he was at soccer practice to check it out (I liked it) with an eye toward whether Jack would enjoy it. I'm pretty sure he will. In fact, he came home as I was watching the very end and he was asking a lot of questions - so I think we'll be watching it together on Tuesday nights after his little sister's in bed.
We've been reading Harry Potter together the last few years - adding a book when we feel he's ready for it. We're in Order of the Phoenix now and HDM seems like it might be just a small step beyond that book in terms of maturity. Does that sound about right?
@flukes For what it's worth, we were assigned the first book to study in Year 7 at school, which is around 11 years of age. I didn't read it because I was a bad student lol, but it was on the curriculum for our age group nonetheless!

Kind of tricky to answer without knowing your son. I probably wouldn't recommend it for most ten-year-olds. My kids are nine and eleven and have read the books. They enjoyed them and are excited about the show but there were definitely parts that went over their heads. There's quite a bit of mature content. Kids are kidnapped and experimented on. Kids die.
Also if you're strongly religious, maybe skip it. The books are very much against organized religion, and the show looks to be sticking quite closely to the books.
Looking forward to the Pod dropping! I thought the first episode delivered, I even thought to myself if one show has a chance to get close to Game of Thrones it’s this one. Although it may be too YA for GOT audiences. But first episode 100 times better at setting up the story than the movie. Only confusion was the Headmaster trying to poison Uncle but then protecting Lyra.
I loved the pod! Listened to it as soon as it dropped on website. For being hesitant about podcasting Alexis is killing it. The “name beef” segment had me rolling! The way you sarcastically said Cecily and then Alexis says I can’t even pronounce mine...so funny and can def relate! My folks nick named me Rusty! Am I a dog?! Cause for the first 6 years of my life I thought I was...I also like how y’all skim the top of spoilers but don’t reveal too much.

Like Cecily I’ve only read Golden Compass. But I enjoyed the first episode. There were a few moments of “huh?” But I’m not concerned. I know the podcast (hello ladies!) or the next episodes will clear things up.

We won't get into the entirety of the series, but we'll definitely allude to future events in the SpoiLore section. In the most recent one, I alluded to a place where Ms. Coulter goes in the future but not what she does or why. So essentially, if you aren't already familiar with the locations, it's not going to be a spoiler. But it may inform your knowledge of the story's trajectory.

I have absolutely zero knowledge of anything regarding this world as I haven't read the books or seen the movie and the podcast definitely helped clarify some things I was questioning. I'm completely with @Flukes in regards to reviving the "mildly interesting" line and I think you both did extremely well. Can't wait for the next episode and some more Cecily and Alexis coverage.

The answer to this question is always read/watch a series in the order it was published. At least the first time, then you can mess around with the order if you want. None of the books are really skippable since they're trilogies. Lyra's Oxford is just a short story and is skippable, but it's great and doesn't take much time at all to read.
The first trilogy is a classic for a reason. The second trilogy starts off strong with La Belle Sauvage. It's just as good as the original books. The Secret Commonwealth just came out, and I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but the reviews have been glowing.
I'm not sure about the show itself but I think Cecily and Alexis did a great job with the Podcast. In fact that's probably the main reason I'll keep watching the show. I have always enjoyed Cecily and A.Ron on the AHS Pod and Alexis has completely won me over.

Alas, I am in the worse and worse camp. It goes seriously off the rails in the third book. I will be interested in how the later books' elements are handled, and what the TV audience reaction is to them. I suspect there may be a huge drop-off in viewers.
Also, I agree with whoever said there are far too few daemons. The boatload of Gyptians should have a boatload of daemons, and many of the characters just don't seem to have them. Or they're invisible. I'm thinking CGI budgets.
I heard the books get progressively worse, and I wasn't a fan of the movie, so I never read them. But I do like the first episode of His Dark Materials. And the discussion between @Cecily and Alexis (I don't know which Alexis you are to tag you) is very insightful and funny. I'm down for more.
