Yeah, @majjam0770, the daemon presentation has been problematic. There should be many more apparent. I find the show has been fits and starts, dramatically, and it can be a slog. And, again, it’s just tedious on “our” world. The two bad guys are screamingly dull. As are the mother and son. It seems to exist only for slow exposition.
I'm just going to echo that I'm having a lot of trouble with the show because I'm constantly distracted by the severe lack of demons. What books are they adapting? Even hiring a pack of trained dogs to run around during the busier scenes would have greatly improved things.
I also don't get why they got rid of the dried fish for Billy. That entire sequence was one of the highlights of the entire trilogy and was also an important character moment for Lyra.
I sure hope 90% of the budget went towards ***spoilers I guess, but it's pretty obvious what's coming up*** the bear fight, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

There must be small print somewhere that we haven't seen:
His Dark Materials featuring Daemons brought to by the same FX team that brought you Ghost in GoT.
For all the action and plot movement, this was a very unsatisfactory episode. What are the gyptians going to do with so many catatonic children and disassociated daemons?
And that LMM. What a shot! Fired into a crowd of children (what it the bullet had gone through the baddie?). Fires all around in a ballon doubtless filled with hydrogen. What could go wrong?
Jesus. Nobody has had a thing to say about this show since my last post? I found myself getting less and less interested in the story, which managed to be both plodding and sketchy, and almost didn't bother with the finale. I perked up a bit at the thought of an army of armored bears going against the Storm trooper minions, but no. Also, it seems you could walk to your destination faster than those sluggish airships. And the conjoining of the two first book's stories kinda belies the ending. Why go to all that trouble to go between worlds when you can just have a cat show you the way? Not sure I'll be back for season two. Also the more Pullman gets into his wacky metaphysics, the less interesting he becomes.
I liked the show for the most part but really have trouble with shows hurting children for dramatic effect. It doesn't achieve the goal of shock and sadness. Just makes me think "why am I watching this?" Bad enough with random children but the last episode makes me want to rethink watching another season.
Next season: the only way to create dust is by smashing an infant's head into a bunch of puppies.
I actually liked the season finale. It was very dark and extremely sad but I thought it wrapped things well. This is by no means a perfect show but it is very entertaining. I’m not a book reader so maybe I am looking at this differently. I’m excited to see what happens in season 2.

I haven't seen those episodes, but my understanding is it's for thematic effect more than dramatic. It's a commentary on religious beliefs like the age of accountability. Also I think the incident you're referring to is intentionally jarring and not something the show will linger on for effect.
As a fan of the books, I enjoyed season one. Some of the decisions made were frustrating: where to use the CGI budget, what is deemed 'too much' for YA, Lin-Manuel's odd introduction. And I think all that needs to be said has been said about the lack of daemons, so I won't belabour the point. But I thought it was visually great and the acting was on point for the most part. Asriel's lab, Trollesund and the little fishing village in particular lived up to the images I had in my mind. And Dafne Keen was brilliant as Lyra - season one MVP for sure.
Thanks to Cecily and Alexis for covering season one of His Dark Materials. You did an excellent job and I feel the podcast really enhanced my enjoyment of the show. I'm very happy you'll be back for season two ... whenever (and in whatever world) that may be.
As a show only person the finale left me disappointed. I was hoping for some more concrete answers about what is going on, but the final episode just left me with more questions. Maybe I just don't get the whole sin plot because I'm not religious. I wonder if that detracts from the enjoyment of the show?
I've had somewhat mixed feelings with the show. I was definitely 100% in on it early in the season but I lost some of my interest in it the past few episodes. This last episode brought me back in though. I think part of it f or me anyways is not really knowing anything about the side plot with Will and not really having any compelling reasons for me to care about it other than them saying that he is important to Lyra's journey.
Man!!!! FUCK Lord ASSHOLE!!!! That was some bullshit! I’m glad the movie sucked so bad that it left that as a surprise! I didnt expect routing for Ms. Coulture to kill him though, exciting turn of events! Good show, worth the watch!
Just finished reading The Subtle Knife. Overall, it was not as good as The Golden Compass. Some of the plots that had a lot of buildup were resolved with a solid "meh." I do have a favorite chapter or few, but no spoilers here. I'm curious how the show is going to remain interesting if it follows the book.
And with that said I will read the final book in the series. They are a super fast read and I'm a glutton for punishment.
I think Pullman the author is very anti organized religion and this is part of the overall story arc. Think Catholic Church when it had all the religious and political power back in the old Europe. That’s the world Lyra comes from from the magisterium perspective.
I’m new to this world too but thoroughly fascinated and enjoying it. I just started the golden compass aka northern lights and I am loving the books and the enrichment it is bringing to my understanding of the tv show. I am not going to read ahead because I have learned that it kinda distorts my expectations and tv viewing pleasure. I am here for the ride.
