OK, where the hell do people actually have bagged milk in this country?

CoryCory New Scotland
And does any other country have bagged milk?

I've been watching a lot of videos about what non-Canadians think/like/know/etc. about Canada, now that my wrist/hand has healed enough to use a mouse (and I'm taking a break from finally watching Mad Men).  And bagged milk is pretty commonly a thing mentioned.

In all fairness, I remember milk in bags (4 liters in 3 bags, in one big bag) as a kid, probably around the late 80s/early 90s.  It just sort of appeared one day, and after a few short years (2 or 3 I'd guess) it just disappeared, as it had never existed.  In fact, until about 3-4 years ago I had forgotten it existed, I blocked that from my mind like the traumatic memory it was.

OK, all joking aside.  I'd guess it's an Ontario thing.  I was originally guessing all of Western Canada, but one commentator said they were from Alberta and they buy their milk in cartons (unless they have the option for both).

And I REALLY want to know if any other country has bagged milk in their grocery stores.

  • It's mostly a Quebec and Ontario thing.  I've lived in both Montreal and Toronto, so all I've ever had is bagged milk.  We can get 1L or 2L cartons, but why would you when the obviously superior 1.33L bags are available?  :#

I've only ever found bagged milk in Canada, but I can't say I have an extensive list of countries I've grocery shopped in.

Your memory of bagged milk in the 80s matches my own. I grew up in Alberta and I do remember bagged milk and the pitchers with the spike in the bottom, but they disappeared while I was still young. These days all milk in Alberta comes in cartons and plastic jugs which can be returned for a deposit.

I seem to remember this coming up before. I think we discovered it was mostly just Ontario and some areas of eastern Europe now.

Hmm, same here with 1L, 2L cartons and 2L and 4L plastic jugs the most common.  But they are the only beverage containers that we cannot returned for a refund (and we play a deposit on them)!  We're barbarians!  No wonder so many of us have moved out there to love Trump and hate Trudeau!

I have never heard of bagged milk, but I guess if one if feeling nostalgic you could always grab a ziplock, go out to the field, and pump away!
  • In my restaurant and Convention Center days I've changed many a large bag of milk in the dispenser machine that has a tube out the bottom and a weighted handle that pinches off the silicone. Typically 2-3 gallon I'd say

Though have never seen that in the grocery store, just delivered through commercial food service distributors.
  • its quite common around Asia to have your drink in a plastic bag. it tends to be more of the older generation but ill get into a taxi and the driver will have his bagged drink of coffee or at least something that looks like coffee hanging from his dashboard.

They sell half gallon bags of milk at in Wisconsin (my home state - have since moved to California) at a popular convenience store/gas station chain called Kwik Trip.  They are similar to 7 Eleven.  Here is an article talking about the bag milk, lest you not believe me :)

Where are you finding boxed, non-refrigerated milk???  That doesn't sound very good.

We have UHT milk - is that some weird thing in America?
  • MichelleMichelle California
There's no way I could drink that.  It's just a thing.   I feel like milk is supposed to be cold, the colder the better.

@Chinaski It’s meant to be for, like, going camping or stuff. We still have regular fresh milk too. I don’t like long life milk - it has a weird taste.

Do you have UHT almond milk and oat milk and whatnot? Most of our plant milks are sold that way.

  • You wanna see some bagged milk? Go to jail. Pint sized and tittie shaped. Bite off the tip you got portable mammary delight. Yes, I had to look up how to spell mammary. iPhone auto-spell must not have been breast fed.
  • I bought some this morning. I'm in Wisconsin. They sell it at convenience stores (Kwik Trip) around here.

At some point the question should be asked: Milk is a liquid made by a cow or other animal to feed its young; we have to squirt it out of the cow’s udders to obtain it. Should humans be drinking this? When it comes to mammals, we're the only species to drink milk directly from other species.

Besides all the ways dairy cows harm the environment, it causes the dreaded double-F's...fat and farts.

    Discuss.

Milk is a lean source of calories, IMO. 3.5% fat from whole milk? That's fantastic. That's 96.5% nonfat.

We're the only species to do a lot of things.

To me, the only compelling reason to stop drinking milk is environmental concerns, and I'm not convinced yet.

Plus, it’s an effective source of calcium, probably better than taking supplements.

And it's so inexpensive! Honestly milk is saving my life right now. I've been dealing with health shit all year and food prep is a massive drain for me so milk is a good, non-fattening way to stop being hungry on those days when I've already eaten 3-4 meals and am still hungry (like I said, health bullshit).
