Just listened to Empire Business - Quite a Pickle

edited January 2020 in Rick and Morty
I was the guy who was wondering why baldmove have so few content during that 2 months. Now I know.

I guess we sometimes learn our lesson in the hard way. But I hope it is good for baldmove in the long run.

*btw Is there a reason why you guys don't support https? You guys must know the benefit of using it judging from you two's background and there must be a good reason that you haven't done it yet

*ARon tells people not to go after other parties with pitchforks and fire*

you guys have been on the internet before, right...? lol
it's pretty much just people with pitchforks and fire.

Glad you guys seem to be taking it in stride and not letting it derail the rest of the Empire. Here's hoping to the NextBigThing™ and maybe getting some of those Bezos pennies back again someday  :)

Also, this just sounds like every business conversation ever. I have a microcosm of this every day which usually goes something like:

Client: So here's an idea, can we do this in the budget and schedule?
Me: No, that wasn't in the scope, and is kinda totally separate than what we're doing now.
Client: Oh, Okay. Good to know

smash cut to 2 hours later
Client email: So I went ahead and let my boss know about the new stuff you're adding and he's excited to see it.

Somehow I've encountered that sequence of events more than I'd like to know...

I remember listening to a New Rockstar podcast and hearing Jim and A.Ron and having a bit of a mark out moment I got to hear them somewhere else.

Retroactively, I do not enjoy that moment anymore. :|

I’m no published creative, but the first thought I had when someone attached to something like Starburns or Rick and Morty shows up with a contract was: get an agent.

  • It kind of sounds like the contact guy was ambitious and took it upon himself to do this on the side hoping to impress his bosses or whatever.

  • I have such respect for you both -  A.Ron and Jim - I am so appreciative of your transparency.  I deeply appreciated this particular Empire podcast ( I like all of them, they are one of my favorite features that you do).   It explained a lot that I felt as a member of the community. I now understand why you were both so exhausted and in need of time off. And somehow when you were first excited about this deal and doing all those Pickle podcasts, it didn't feel like the opportunity was fully in alignment with the Bald Move I have come to know, but I was interested to see what would happen.

Sorry this turned into a world of disappointment, uber stress (seriously texting at all hours and expecting a response is whacked!!!) and being "sold". I truly believe  like most hard things, you will  come to truly value what you learned.

You clearly learned A LOT.  It was so seductive, but it was a house of cards.  It was fascinating to hear the development advice and suggestions that you were told - it was so off base.

There is something so unique about Bald Move. I know you are searching for a way to grow it and increase your incomes which is totally needed and understandable . I wish you the best and appreciate your work.  I listen to your podcasts as I fall asleep at night - even ones where i don't watch the shows just because I enjoy listening to the 2 of you so much.

  • Going to admit something on here, Everytime the guys mentioned how exhausted they were and how much they're looking forward to vacation time I used to raise my eyebrows and wonder what they're talking about because there wasn't much to listen to ( am not a Rick n Morty watcher ) . That's why I appreciate this latest empire business podcast because it explains a lot . Also glad you guys stuck to your principles and refused to use the game of thrones feed to dump advertising on it .

  • I don't know where to find the Empire Business podcasts.  Is it fair to ask if someone can summarize what was discussed?

    They're available to club members.
  • Cool. Thanks.
  • really sucks for a variety of reasons. even outside of the business benefits im sure meeting Dan would have been a bucket list item.

i agree with Aron this is just a learning step and the next big thing is out there and this will be crucial in the history of the empire.

i know they talk about employees. Hopefully they can eventually afford a sales/media/marketing person who can run these sort of things.

  • Just heard the cast. Sorry that happened to you guys.

  • This is such a bummer and disappointment. (Understatement). I saw the same advertisement ARon mentioned about the Rockstar thing and thought “didn’t Bald Move drop a podcast a couple days ago?” Thought that was so odd. Can’t believe they had so much disrespect for you to find out from the TV. Something is whack for sure to put it kindly...

  • If the second half of Season 4 R&M is as good as the first half, all I can say is: Fonzie, get your skis.

One of the things I love about you guys is how honest you are about everything. Unless you’re actually just a lying bunch of liars. If so, then shame on me I guess for falling for it and devouring all your content.

Glad you had relaxing vaca time and that you’re back doing what you love — being independent.

Bald Move will rule the world some day. Pickle that.

Also The Mew Pope was so good and I can’t wait to hear your take tomorrow! ... Mew Pope? Sure typo, why not. He’s the Jellicle Pope!

  • not seeing this in my empire business feed. curious if it got posted there and the problem is on my end, or if it's just not up on the feet yet?

  • So much of this rang true to me from my dealings in the music industry... just an absolute clusterfuck mishmash of utter incompetence and gross negligence at all levels.  One vague empty promise after another.

Live and learn... and get everything in writing.

  • Thanks guys for being so open and honest, that’s why you’re truly the best.

I never watched Rick and Morty before you guys started the podcast, so I only started watching because of your coverage.

Man I just want to say with hopefully not starting any beef, and this also hopefully not to be perceived as dick sucking, but I really do appreciate the BM business model, perhaps too pure at times for it's own good, but the business model that isn't "point to something, anything(!), in the room and I'll fuck it!"  There is enough of that everywhere in life.

    True that!
  • It sucks that it worked out that way. After seeing a run of music industry biopics recently, I feel like at least this part of show business is based in reality. I have a friend who tried to start an internet-comedy thing with some former Comedy Central people, and it seemed like a similar experience.  A lot of pseudo-connections and throwing shit on a wall to see what sticks. A lot of broken promises. Know you guys aren't the only ones, and it happens way more than it should.

I am not a R&M guy, but I gave it a try, and I do hope the boys (and girls) succeed. I hope they are able to do it their way, though, without giving up who they are or what makes this feel like a community. 2019 seems like it was a rough year, so hopefully 2020 will make up for it.

re: 2019 as an especially rough year... it's just a year that it felt like most of what we tried to do "extra" just failed. Like, there's a universe where D&D gave a shit and Game of Thrones had an excellent last year that united the fan base and  boosted hype for the prequels and I sold a ton of copies of my books and Star Wars was universally beloved by all parties and the Mandalorian becomes a breakout hit for our coverage and we go on Harmontown and don't disgrace ourselves and get a bunch of new listeners completely outside our normal audience and a Watchmen series that tackles racism isn't seen as "shit" by half of that fanbase and all the hard work paid off and we're on cloud nine.

A lot of things didn't break our way. This thread also has helped me realized that I guess we're more opaque about what's going on with Bald Move in the moment to moment stuff than if feels like. I thought more of the behind the scenes stuff would be obvious from the public comments we did make. I don't like bragging or bitching about stuff so it always feels to me like I'm talking 10x more about stuff as I should be and usually there are a few people who are pretty vocal with their "just shut up and cast" opinions, so it's easy to default to a share less that still feels like too much kind of model? I dunno, this far along and I'm still feeling like I have a lot to learn!

You are absolutely right, Doctor Nick. That was my first thought, too. This is the type of situation where an agent is sorely needed and will look out for the best interests of her client. I am a published author of several books for young people including Black Panther: The Young Prince from Marvel/Disney. I have an agent, and she helps me in every aspect of my career. As soon as the boys got the call/email from Starburns/Rick & Morty, that would have been enough credo to get an agent to represent them.

Not sure if the boys will read this, but if you want to talk about agents and representation I'd be happy to share what I know and give you an idea of how and where to start looking.

    Cheers

Oh, regarding HTTPS; it fucks up the ad-free feed logins. We support it, we just don't force it by default. It's a problem that we need to work out though for sure.

Man, I’ve worked in the mortgage industry for 20 years (context: I’m in my late 30s, so literally my entire adult life), and I still learn something new every single day.

Treat it as a strength, not a weakness.  Some days are super fucked up and the lessons you learn are taught in a manner way harder than they should be, but at the end of that day you’re a stronger person for having learned it.

  • @A_Ron_Hubbard - I hope you and @Jim don't look at it as "failure." Been divorced. Been laid off. You tried an experiment, and it didn't work. If you're lucky, you learned something from it and can move forward.

Even though I am just one listener, I think there are many of us out there that want to balance between offering feedback without discouraging you and watching you guys swing for the fences. Keep swinging!

also, on the https thing, the cert is expired. I'm assuming you let it expire bc it wasn't working, but...

The cert is not expired? I just checked it out, it expires Wednesday, April 1, 2020 according to my browser.

  • Listening to this yesterday, I was struck by how similar in tone it seems your experience was to that of the main characters in Showtime's "Episodes" in dealing with Hollywood executive types.  If you find some time to watch an episode or two, I bet there would be some parallels.  It would be weirdly paradoxical to laugh at the absurdity of it happening to a fictional character, while internally crying about the memory of it happening to you.  Also, the show is pretty darn funny, and stars Matt LeBlanc as a fictionalized version of himself.

  • This was a fascinating Podcast, the Empire Businesses always are. I would like to point out that, although you didn't get the rewards (you expected and richly deserved), you built up a great catalogue of content In Pickle me this, that (even with Jim only instant casting it at the end) beats any other podcasts on R&M I've heard. So, great work... As always.
