Make a Mixtape

edited May 13 in General
I was bored and enjoyed the 10 album list thread so here is a mixtape. I tried to keep it under 20 and not reuse the same band twice. No rhyme, reason or theme just what popped into my head. It was about 50 so narrowing down to 20ish was hard.

The Cure - In Between Days If only this song was longer...
The Pushstars - Any Little Town One of my favorite songs from a short lived band
The Clash - Lost in a Supermarket Such a great takedown of growing up in suburban life and consumer culture
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Rudy Can't Fail All Clash covers suck, except this one. Probably better than the original.
David Bowie - Heroes Album cut, you play the single version and we will have words
Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street One of the most brutal takedowns of someone I've ever heard. Man he hated this person.
The Band - The Weight So much to pick from but I always come back to this.
The English Beat - I Confess Or The Beat for those in the UK. One of the best horn solos thrown into a rock song
Counting Crows - Einstein on the Beach I'm not even anti nuke but I love this song.
J Geils Band - One Last Kiss Underrated band, especially their earlier bluesier stuff.
The Alarm - One Step Closer to Home (LIVE) This song always picks me up
Lowen & Navarro - We Belong So beautiful, no wonder Pat Benatar covered it.
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road I could pick just about anything he wrote with Bernie Taupin
Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't it Be Good I would love for someone to cover this with a real horn section
Squeeze - Up the Junction Relationship story in a few minutes
The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends Such a great voice
The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues My friend's father was a lobsterman and whenever we were closing a bar and he was working with his dad the next morning I'd slip this in on the jukebox.
The Neighborhoods - Prettiest Girl Local Boston band that should have had more exposure
Pete Townshend - Slit Skirts Great song about getting older
Michael Penn - No Myth Song that made it into a lot of my mixtapes
Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Yalla Yalla They were a mixture of punk, folk, dance and world music. Wish Joe was still here.
Paco del Lucia - Entre Dos Aguas One of the greatest guitar works I've ever heard.

Post yours. Try to keep it 20ish songs with no duplicates.

  • Fantastic thread idea. I love making mixes and get pretty giddy with excitement at the opportunity to put one together. Yay! I'm going to put something together tomorrow.
The tunes I recognize from yours are fantastic. Love the Michael Penn choice. In fact, I'm switching over to listen to it now.

It would be cool to turn this in to a Spotify/Apple Music playlist of Bald Move member favorites once we get more songs

Yes, this! I'm not sure what the logistics are, but I think it's a really fun idea.

P.S. Nik Kershaw is Wouldn’t It Be Good, not Wouldn’t It Be Nice.

That song was in the mid 20s for me. Love that song. I never saw them live but heard they were a great live band.

@CapeGabe They are still one of my favourite bands - I play them pretty regularly. I’m very stuck in the 90s.

I had a bit of time this morning so I complied alist of the songs above plus one song each from my personal top 10 albums to a Bald Move Community Playlist. I am pretty sure I made the playlist collaborative so maybe others can add songs as well. Some songs were missing or different version so I did my best to add as many as I could. I only use spotify so maybe someone can do something similar for apple music users

@calebthrower nice!  Thank you for doing that!  I was able to find Laid and the remix of Un Simple Histoire.  Are you able to move their position in the playlist?

Unfortunately it looks like that cannot be done. I typically listen to playlists on shuffle to mix it up. That would be a nice feature for spotify to add though

  • @calebthrower Thanks for taking the time to do that, man. Very cool.

  • So, I'm still work-shopping it, and I feel like it's missing something, but I think it's a pretty solid draft.
I put together kind of a running story. It's a story of an anarchist scientist who unleashes a zombie virus onto the population and triggers the apocalypse. Seeing the impact of what he is responsible for and feeling the shame he leads the fight against the zombies, they lose. This all happens against the backdrop of a love story, a love who ends up dying in the battle and ends with him wandering alone in a world without hope.

I've shared this a few times but if anyone's into mid-late 80s/early 90s alternative/new wave, I made this channel/'playlist' on Pandora a long time ago and still love it.  It feels just like the old days, driving around SF and having fun with friends, without a care in the world.  https://pandora.app.link/rno27J3Vs6
