In her upcoming book she is said to have personal knowledge that Trump used the 'N' word during the making of The Apprentice, and, there are tapes to confirm it . . .

Wouldn't affect me truthfully. I am sure he has used the N word, but I grew up and live in the South so while I have known the negative stigma/connations/degradation that comes with the N word all my life, I'm not gonna get all worked up about it unless he was using it directly at someone to make them feel like 1 inch tall. Bill Maher has used the N word and it really hasn't screwed him, still has a show and still loved by millions.

Oh okay, so you're waiting to see if he used the N word to insult someone, but like, really pointedly and spitefully insult them, so the reaction of this person, if they exist, would also be a factor. Then this would be a problem for you.

Well yeah okay, let's wait and see.

  • Meh, I've paid little attention to this Omarosa character since her vomit-inducing comments here:

Like POTUS is something to hold as a means of vengeance? Yeah, I mean, it makes sense within the context of Trump's character, but it sorta belittles the office.

If he uses it against someone as a verbal attack, yeah I would find that to be a problem. If it's a tape of him using it the way the guy from Papa Johns used it, then no because it was used in context. Probably shouldn't say it even then, but it's a word and I think words need to be directed at someone to be harmful.

Guess my other point to make is if there is no tape and Omarosa is full of shit will that make you think the President is any less of a racist or a good guy? Probably not. If used the N word in context or as an attack on someone what do you gain from it? Validation of what you already believe and then what? It's kinda of a wash since if it's bullshit you still don't like him and if it's true you get to hate him just a bit more.

@anubus21 - No, it wouldn't change my opinion of him. I was curious because your "maybe she's full of shit, let's wait and see" seemed to indicate that whether or not she was full of shit would affect your opinion somehow.

The N word is a disgusting word because some words are things; that's what language is; that's why language works. I will not be discussing that. I'm simply saying it because the truth should be said.

Alex Jones brand of “performance artistry” is bad for society, but you can be a bad performance artist and that’s fine. One of the many areas in which he crosses the line and becomes dangerous is the attacks on the Newtown parents and the resulting stalking, harassing, and threatening of those poor folks by his fanatic followers who actually believe that he speaks the truth. Pizzagate was another area where he crossed the line.

The market can’t fix him because of our societal obsession with snake oil and general lack of critical thinking and trust in science/facts. Dude doesn’t need sponsors, he pedals fear and then sells them the cure for it. He sells brain formula, immune system gargle, male enhancement formula, child tranquilizers, lung cleanse, etc., etc. Regulation of the supplement industry is an embarrassing joke as they only demand that the stuff be not actively harmful at the recommended dosages, it doesn’t matter whether it does any of the stuff that they say that it does or whether actual scientific studies have debunked them.

I’d also love to kaibosh the anti-vaxers on the left as their position clearly causes societal harm for those gullible enough to be fooled by them, and for those around them with compromised immune systems. Alex Jones, BTW, is also an anti-vaxer because, you know, of course he is.

The anti-GMO stuff on the left and the inexplicable resurgence of the flat earther movement are also BS, but they don’t seem to cause actual harm so I guess we have to tolerate them.

Climate change deniers? That’s interesting because they are causing a great deal of harm, but it’s long term harm vs a discrete event so it’s much more of a muddy issue to argue.

Q-Anon is the next Alex Jones. That pile of inflammatory horseshit is going to end up getting people killed. It’s not an accident that conspiracies like this and Pizzagate go for child sex trafficking, that kind of deplorable crime justifies any kind of violent reaction so it’s a go-to for these lunatics and will end in tears.
Sort of an aside, but are anti-vax and anti-GMO considered "left" beliefs? I usually just consider them to be anti-intellectual.
There are a lot of leftie organic vegan anti-vaxers in California so it’s always struck me as a more left than right movement, but there are certainly a lot of anti-intellectual folks on the right like Jones and Michelle Bachman so characterizing it as left belief is probably unfair.

The GMO issue is definitely more left than right though as the whole organic natural food fanaticism tends to run heavier on the left.

Lots of left coast liberals mock the climate change denialists on the right while unironically seeking ancient eastern medicine to cure disease and stay young, and while making lifestyle choices/purchases on Goop.
Sure, but climate change denial is a core platform on the right. Most of the left sees these idiots as, well, idiots.

    @Flukes

Because there is more important shit going on in my world that I care about like my daughter being born in December, my wife, paying my mortgage, my health, my job, the rest of my family and getting ready for bouldering/climbing season.

There is also more important shit happening in the world than whether or not Trump is a racist or used the N word. He isn't almighty, there are still checks and balances and more than likely he will lose the House comes November and the Dems will stall him for 2 years until he loses reelection. I care about lower taxes, no one fucking with the US abroad, not being penalized if I don't want to buy any fucking health care, more jobs and a Supreme Court/Congress that isn't going to try and turn my child into a gender less automaton through upholding dumb rulings and passing idiotic laws (keep Roe v Wade, that shouldn't be touched).

He has said the N word in the past. I have, my father has, members of my family have, friends of mine have and so have people you know (and probably yourself if you are honest enough to admit that the word has at least popped into you head). I have never said it to belittle anyone personally or said it to their face, but I have used the word nonetheless. Not proud of it and I have been friends with black folks, Aborigines, Maoris, Fijians, Sri Lankans, Kenyans and a myriad of other darker skinned people for most of my life. But guess what, we all have our faults and if the President used the N word in a casual convo and not directed at someone then I choose to not give a shit. Five bucks on the table says LBJ, Carter and Clinton have all used the N word as well.

I don't believe in the KKK, white power, Nazis or any other group of their ilk. Never have and never will because It's idiotic to brutalize others for their skin color, culture or religion. But the world still has those idiots around and some of them are gonna like the Prez cause he is a white guy who speaks like them sometimes. If that makes Trump a nazi or racist in your estimation then go for it. I think he is a naive politician who doesn't know what he is doing half the time and has smarter people around him to help him make decisions. He is a figurehead, he isn't the power in the oval office.

Cool, rant over and that's why I don't care. @emnofseattle you got anything you want to add to this brother?

Yep, probably still won't care unless he actually directs the N word at somebody. Lower taxes for corporations is fine by me, and my taxes are lower come next year. The health care system in this country wasn't perfect before Obamacare but at least it worked and didn't see huge hikes all the time...could be worse and we could have your healthcare system. Still more jobs bubba and racism/inequality is on the way out so I don't see a pressing need to waste energy on something that is inevitable in my estimation. I'm guessing you would prefer the US to be more like Canada in that regard? And yeah, even hillbillies and rednecks can have black friends...if any of them ever came to me about someone being racist or treating them unfairly I would speak up but I don't go around asking "Hey, are you being oppressed or vilified?"

  • Shouldn’t we at least pretend like we expect more out of the leader of our country than we expect out of our racist grandparents?

The anti-intellectualism in a large part of our culture is jarring. Can’t trust elites who went to fancy universities, but trust a guy who talks like local used car salesman because you can relate to them.

So the end of this sentence

Once the tapes come out and if what she is saying isn't bullshit....
    is "I still won't care."

Cool. I thought you were implying something else and I'm not the only one.
    I care about lower taxes,
    for corporations
not being penalized if I don't want to buy any fucking health care
How about making it affordable? Would that also work?
    more jobs
    that pay less
a Supreme Court/Congress that isn't going to try and turn my child into a gender less automaton
    ... ok

Notably absent from your list is combating racism and inequality. That's weird considering how many black friends you have.

And if he does? What then?
Then there should be consequences. I'll settle for stepping down and putting Pence in the presidency or censure from Congress. Btw, doesn't look like Canada is doing all that great with the racism/inequality either these days....https://www.flare.com/news/racism-in-canada/

Yeah ok we’re done with this shit, Donald J. Trump is a racist full stop. This is the official Bald Move ruling on the matter. No more arguments. If you disagree, you’re done here. This is the only warning you’ll get.

I'm well aware that racism is a problem everywhere, not just the United States. Unlike you, I actually care about it (remember, you left it off your list even though it was the topic of discussion) and don't think progress is inevitable if good people just wait for it to happen.

Why don't you ask your black friends if they think equality is inevitable and any effort spent trying to achieve it is wasted.

May I suggest you listen to the BlacKkKlansman podcast?

I think what we're on to now is that he hurts and hates a lot of people, but as long as I get what I want, none of it matters.

Where are we on authoritarianism and Donald J. Trump?
  • I'd say he is a wannabe authoritarian. As much as the bootlicker GOP members of Congress are covering for him, they can't cover him enough to grant him full-on dictator status.
  • Had polling after the election that showed a strong correlation between authoritarian tendencies and having voted for Trump. So whether he is intentionally or instinctually authoritarian, his tendency is speaking to his base’s tendency in this direction.
