Had polling after the election that showed a strong correlation between authoritarian tendencies and having voted for Trump. So whether he is intentionally or instinctually authoritarian, his tendency is speaking to his base’s tendency in this direction.
He can't say enough good things about Putin, Erdoğan, Duterte, Kim Jong-un etc but has nothing but derision for Merkel, Trudeau, Macron etc.
  • Oh no question he is authoritarian, but I don’t know that he does it consciously or has any self awareness of it. I think it a natural result of his narcissistic personality type (as is a lack of self-awareness).

Definitely a result of his narcissism...but that might be true of all dictators.  Chicken or the egg?

Even worse than the C word to a woman?

No one is trying to make your child into a genderless automaton. People are just trying to make it easier on people who don't conform to a mainstream notion of gender. You haven't met your child yet so you don't know how he or she will express themselves when they come of age. Probability states that they will be a straight, gender normative teenager but they might not be- If that happens, though, it comes from within, and not from the Supreme Court.

I feel like most people have never even met a transgender person so it makes it easy to make them into a bogeyman (bogeyperson?) but in reality, I live in a city where a lot of gender-neutral stuff has been in place forever and it doesn't take anything away from anyone else.
If my girl questions being a girl, or likes girls or whatever I will always support her. even if she becomes a he. I don't feel like being trans is a sin or should scare anyone. My folks will have a harder time with it, but it wouldn't be the end of my world as long as he/she is happy. Think the gender neutral stuff can be a bit much for a lot of folks in the country to handle and a lot of people think gender neutral terminology and policies are being adopted at a faster pace than they are comfortable with (which I am sure will become less so and more normalized in the next 10-20 years).

Yeah ok we’re done with this shit, Donald J. Trump is a racist full stop. This is the official Bald Move ruling on the matter. No more arguments. If you disagree, you’re done here. This is the only warning you’ll get.

According to this ruling, those who run interference for and/or openly support Donald J. Trump are therefore supporting a racist?

Yeah that’s basically how things stand now. If anyone doesn’t like that, too fucking bad.

At the very least they don't care that he's a racist and that his government is enacting racist policies, which is essentially the same thing.

They're either racist, or racism isn't a deal breaker for them - either way Bald Move won't be a platform for them to share their views on this particular topic.

Yeah guys and gals, at this point, Jim and I really don't care what mental gymnastics people are doing to avoid labeling Trump a racist, or avoid thinking they are supporting a racist who implements racist policy. Or if they're holding their nose because they like other things that perhaps aren't racist and they want to overlook the racist shit he does. I can't understand it myself. It's unlikely any amazing insights are going to be generated by such a "debate".

As mentioned, Jim and I are working on a joint statement to clarify this issue.  It will include plenty of N U A N C E and E M P A T H Y.  It will reflect our shared history of previously thinking things we now consider backwards and ugly. But it's getting time everyone in this country and indeed the world has to pick a side about certain things that are going on in plain sight in this government, and if you listen to our BlacKkKlansman podcast, it's not hard to see which side we're taking.

Plenty of public and prominent conservatives have repudiated Trump. That Trump is a racist is not a fringe opinion, it is both mainstream and widely accepted. I don't really care what's in the man's heart. I don't think it's interesting to question if he's "really" a racist, just like I'm sure gay people didn't care 20 years ago when I was making an asshole of myself online arguing against gay marriage that I didn't personally hate them. Cause I truly never did. I was just advocating that they shouldn't be allowed to have a legally recognized relationship because I genuinely felt it was bad for society. Was I really homophobic? Did the difference matter?

Conservative people who are still supporting Trump are welcome here in the same way that I as a liberal gun owner am welcome at my local shooting range. I am welcome to shoot, talk about gun safety and performance and ask questions about models and ammo and what not. I'm not welcome to argue against the 2nd amendment or hand wring about school shooting or even wear a "I'm with her" shirt. If I did I'd expect to be on thin ice and if I was making their community angry be asked to leave.

We've worked hard to build a community that people of color, and queer people and women feel welcome and respected. It's been a long road for Jim and I get get to this place, and we feel these values and ethos are vital for moving forward as a society and indeed a species. Whether intentional or not, whether people's hearts are in the right places or not, I can clearly see that I'm welcoming these people into a space where a very small number of folks are allowed to make them feel unsafe and disrespected, to the point where they feel they can't engage with these folks without violating forum rules.

At the end of the day, we're private business owners who are exercising our rights to free association and expression, and if we have to decide to come down on one side or another as citizens to create a community that reflects our ethos then so be it. We feel that this will have the end result of making our community stronger. We are not turning this into a left wing organization. If we manage to attract a few soviet-style authoritarian leftist apologists and Nation of Yahweh types with our rhetoric please trust when I say that Jim and I will kindly tell them to shut the fuck up or get out, too. If democrats and other leftist forces manage to regain a few levers of power in this country, we will continue to point out their hypocrisy and failings like we did during the Obama administration. We're not blind that if you dig deep enough and look hard enough there are crazy leftists out there. I've run into my share. It's just that they're certainly not a dominant force in society, nor causing problems on these forums. That's why "both sides" arguments are at some level, willfully ignorant, displaying a profound lack of empathy, or made in bad faith.

If you think this is extreme or total bullshit, I don't know what to tell you. Enjoy the shooting range, but leave your MAGA hats in your glovebox, or our polite and professional mods will show you to the door.

  • On the one hand, I kind of hope Qanon becomes more mainstream because it will mean all the conspiracy mongers on the right who hate it will finally get the comeuppance they so richly deserve. On the other, the idea that Qanon could become mainstream Republican politics embraced by actual elected politicians is frightening even if they lose because of it.

@MattyWeaves I don't think it's appropriate to mime arguments that are bannable. I think it's similarly derailing.

We’re 24hrs away from that event in DC.  There will be violence and I have a horrible sinking feeling that someone very well might lose their life again.  This whole situation is as unstable as a box of weeping dynamite.

DJT was dog whistling and doing the both sides thing on Twitter this morning in preparation for tomorrow.

I watched Birth of A Nation this morning for the first time ever. It’s on YouTube.  Gross.  Need to take a shower now.

  • i can only imagine the youtube comments on birth of a nation.

although to be fair they're probably pretty much exactly the same as on literally any fox news story about almost anything at all.  some people really are kinda first and foremost bigots, at least online (and probably it's pretty close to the front of their heads in "real life" too).

  • Ah, one of Woodrow Wilson's favorites, shown specially at the White House I believe.

Yeah Woodrow Wilson was a racist, what else is new? A surprisingly high number of Presidents were racist.

Just blows my mind how racist that movie is and how it was like the Titanic of its day.  Lots of parallels between 1915, over 100 years ago and today. Super racist president.  Rise of KKK then, rise of Alt Right now....emboldened by that movie then, emboldened by Alex Jones types now.  Griffith’s follow up blockbuster is called Intolerance. And it’s his “digging his heels in the dirt” butthurt response to the critics that protested Birth of a Nation.  Cause people were supposed to tolerate his intolerance.  He literally likens himself to the persecution of Jesus Christ in the movie for fuckssake! He wrote a big 1st amendment essay in response to people trying to get Birth of a Nation pulled. Same argument going on right now.  Over 100 years later fighting the same bullshit.  When DJT says he’s against “All” racism he is dogwhistling about persecution of the white culture which is exactly what those Nazis are marching in DC about today. Same as Birth of a Nation bemoaning the white South being put under the heel of black freedmen. Just disgusting propaganda, like Triumph of the Will level of blantancy.

Now that I’m an international traveler, can I complain about just how dirty every west coast American city is, seriously spent the last few days in Puerto Montt, a day in Valdivia, now in Ancud, heading up to Valparaíso on Tuesday, the sidewalks are so clean you can eat off of them...
  • I'm watching the white power rally in Washington DC and spotted a racist wearing a Coldplay shirt.  Something about literally made me laugh out loud.  "I hate black people, but I love the smooth, safe sound of office rock!"
