If that’s the case, my mistake. My understanding of the story was that he wasn’t underage and that it wasn’t a statutory rape case, but consent laws are ridiculously different everywhere. To be honest, it’s a confusing story all round, which someone has clearly deliberately leaked to get at Argento. I’ve seen speculation that Weinstein still has his Israeli investigators going after his accusers, that the boy in question leaked it himself (if not I’d hope the media got his permission to publicly name him - it would all the more awful if he was unwillingly outed in this case), and even that Bourdain’s family leaked it in retaliation for her cheating on him before he died. It’s a very messy story about a very messy person.

And side note: her throwing Bourdain under the bus in her denial is really not a good look. He was 100% supportive of her in her assault claims and while I’m not one to buy into the theory that his family leaked this story, I could certainly believe they have multiple reasons to dislike her.

  • He was under age.
He alleges that he was plied with alcohol first which would also not be legal given his age, and which would cloud the consent issue even if he were of age.
Now leaked messages (TMZ so consider the source) allege to show her admitting the sex, stating that she didn’t realize he was underage until he tried to shake her down, stating that he was the aggressor in the incident (the horny kid jumped me... it wasn’t raped [sic], but I was frozen. He was on top of me), that he sent her unsolicited nudes all these year (troublesome from a legal perspective if he sent her nudes while underage), and that she’ll move to Africa or the Amazon if she loses her job over this because she wants to be among the 90% of the world that doesn’t give a F about this shit.
Photo is allegedly them shirtless in bed.

If legit, the messages are ugly, ugly, ugly.

Not #metoo related, but Bourdain's suicide is becoming increasingly sordid and sad.

here is the link to the TMZ article (I am with you @LordBy, take with a grain of salt considering it's TMZ). If what they reported is accurate it does look bad for her to be admitting to sleeping with the kid. And in the article she says it was on SnapChat so don't think she will be able to show he kept pursuing her unless they have a way to archive that stuff. Either way, seems more messed up the more it goes on.

And yeah, Bourdain must have been going through a lot more than anyone knows.
  • If Bourdain was helping her deal with this while advocating for her in her #metoo moment, it must have been tough yeah.

To be clear this incident happened in 2013 before she and Bourdain got together so it wouldn’t be an episode of infidelity there (and I don’t know that I’d assume that their relationship was so traditionally-defined in any case).

If the incident did occur, she’d have been better off pleading Italian since the fling would have been okay there and she may not be as familiar as she should be with US/California law. I mean it would still look bad, but better than denial and victim-blaming which is from a more nefarious playbook.

I've been reading things of uncertain provenance on Reddit- so YMMV and MMV.  But the sequence of events I've seen proposed is roughly:
    1. 2006- Bourdain actually mentions Argento on his show in the South Florida episode as a dream woman of his.
    2. A decade later, he actually arranges to shoot an episode with her in Italy, starts a relationship and is head over heels.
    3. He starts smoking again and drinking more heavily hanging out with her.
    4. He advocates with her and supports her #metoo issues.
    5. At some point he may have counselled her about and made a payment for this sexual assualt settlement of hers.
    6. He employs her on his show when the director who is supposed to film the episode gets sick.
    7. Per Reddit info, she is drunk often and somewhat troubled on the shoot, and he shitcans a long time, well loved staffer who had actually been the focus of a few episodes of his show, after he tries to intervene in the issue at the time.
    8. The episode she shot is airing, and he can't reach her for hours while he is in France
    9. She is then seen in papparazi photos with this French person at haunts she went to with Bourdain in Italy.
    10. She posts an Instagram in a Sid Vicious shirt (supposedly someone called Bourdain the Sid Vicious of cooking) saying Fuck Everyone hours before his suicide.
    11. His suicide becomes known, and she deletes the instagram post.
    12. Sandra Ripert (Bourdain's buddy's wife) and Ottavia, his estranged spouse, have retweeted a Penthouse article about Argento's toxic feminitiy.
  • I’m a big fan of Bourdain’s, but any kind of fact pattern blaming Argento for his ultimate demise is icky.

He was a grown-assed man with a lot of demons, including his substance abuse history and iffy relationship with alcohol, and was responsible for who he chose to associate with be they good or bad for him.

What the hell. *So* little of this has anything to do with Argento and her alleged assault of Bennett. Are you just throwing in an over simplistic blame for Bourdain's suicide for extra spice, or?
  • Really, so you don't think 5-9 would affect someone who is overly involved in a relationship?  He had his own mental health issues with relationships, but going over the top extending yourself for someone and getting cheated doesn't seem like it would be good for Bourdain's mental state.
  • The events of life affect everyone, but the blame game for suicides is an ugly game of dubious utility.

Agreed. She is seeming more and more like a toxic person, but he made his own choices.

I get what you’re saying, but unless the person is actively encouraging/pushing them to kill themselves (as in the case of that teenage girl with her boyfriend), you can’t hold others responsible for a suicide.

Having said that, I could certainly believe Bourdain’s family feels she is responsible.

Well, in the last 24 hours Louis CK did a surprise stand up performance and got a standing ovation, and Netflix announced another season of Master Of None with Aziz Ansari. That #metoo witch hunt is really ruining men’s lives...

After Mel Gibson’s comeback I’m not even surprised anymore really. Fame and fortune can paper over a whole lot of shitty, criminal level behavior.

I'd like to state for the record that I predicted this on a previous thread. Lol

Master of None isn't even a good show.
Every woman predicted this. We all know what we’re worth.

I started to read the comments and then just... ah, fuck.

I literally think of men the way I think of dogs these days. There are some individual ones I’m fond of and enjoy the company of, but as a group overall I find them frightening and I don’t want them anywhere near me.

When I realized I was gay, there was this whole ball of fear and worry in my head I could just... toss away. It was really nice. Some of that was directly related to attraction, like, "Oh I only need to be friends with men, I can totally just be friends with men," but some of it wasn't, like domestic violence statistics.
