Apple TV+ service launching Nov. 1 for $4.99/family subscription (1yr free with purchase)

Very surprised to see Apple setting such a competitive price and offer (1 year of service free with any Apple product purchase).  One could argue this is because they do not have the clout in the space to guarantee quality content but just going by the few trailers for The Morning Show, See, and For All Of Mankind as well as the reported "higher $$ than GoT per episode" for all these shows, I have a hard time believing there be at least one gem.

  • Makes sense - ultimately their revenue is always going to come from hardware so content production is more for getting people to buy hardware, and for publicity. They have cash to burn, and they want big splashy subscription numbers out of the gate. Their library can't compete with Disney/Hulu, Netflix, Warner (HBO Max), etc, so they have to get people in the door somehow.
  • For Apple it’s less of a business in its own right than it is a customer retention cost. They hope to keep people using Apple products for longer. So if it’s never actually profitable on a standalone basis that’s not necessarily a problem. That said I agree that’s an amazing price point. It’s lower than the consensus expected. I imagine they’ll try to increase it gradually a few years from now.

  • With disney debuting this month as well, apple had to price theirs stupidly low or they’d be completely lost in the news cycle.

    $6.99/mo (or $70/yr if paid up front). $12.99 for a Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle.

  • I got in on the Disney+ deal. Got 3 years for $140.97. I think it was 33% off the regular monthly price. Have three very young kids so this was a baller of a deal!

That promo is over now. Sorry chums.

I have no interest in Apple TV.

Apple's hardware business is generally on the downslope:

    Q2: 2019
    • $31.05 billion iPhone
    • $11.45 billion: Services
    • $5.51 billion: Mac
    • $5.13 billion: Wearables, Home and Accessories
    • $4.87 billion: iPad
    Q4: 2018
    • $37.1 Billion iPhone
    • $9.98 Billion Services
    • $7.41 Billion Mac
    • $4.23 Billion Other Products
    • $4.08 Billion iPad
Apple didn't provide breakdowns last quarter when they had a guidance miss. So they're motivated to keep building services.

Yeah I got an email offer for $160 for 3 years. No kids, so I'm thinking about it.
