The Great California Power Blackout of 2019

  • The US really needs to move to having their power infrastructure built underground. I’ve lived in Singapore for 8 years and have never once had a blackout or power outage.

Annnnd we need to prep for a solar flare event. So many issues... I'm already just bracing for having perhaps 3 years of no power in my lifetime. Is Singapore ready for that? I might move lol.

Not that I don’t agree with you for other reasons, but this is actually an intentional power outage by PG&E in their hopes to prevent wildfires.

The weather conditions this week were predicted to be very similar to those that caused the Camp Fire that started and they were ultimately blamed for.

I don’t think any country is ready for that.

The main issue in California(and really all of the US) is their power is conducted through highly vulnerable power lines that can easily be destroyed/knocked over taken out because the are above ground.

In singspore the entire power grid is underground. Their is no above ground power lines. So they are much less vulnerable to things like a fire or a random car crashing into a pole or winds or anything else that can knock down a simple tree connecting power.

Even with Singapore having most of its power infrastructure underground that’s not going to save them from a solar flare. The entire world is reliant on satellites and I’m sure a lot of Singapore’s critical electronics that run their infrastructure are above ground so even if their power lines are save their systems wouldn’t be. Not to mention singspore is totally reliant on imports and a solar flare would wreak havoc on global trade causing the country to have massive issues importing goods like food and other essentials.

  • I’ve actually built a list I keep in the house just in case of some sort of catastrophe. It won’t save us from 3 years but it would keep us alive for a month. Also I’m sure I’m missing things here so feel free to add.

    Food for 4 weeks

    Water for 4 weeks

    Vitamins for 4 weeks

Water purifier that can clean dirty water

First aid kit for family for 4 weeks

    Chemical masks for everyone

Flashlights/torches with enough batteries to last 2 weeks

    Compass

    Swiss Army knife

    Hunter knives

    Binoculars

    Tent

    Mosquito spray

    Anti bacterial wipes

    Hand hold charger

    Full power bank

    Small survival guide book

    Survival bag of plantable seeds

Nutrional bars with minimum Daily calorie intake

Canned goods including fruits and vegetables

Dude, nice! Since you're so far along, I'd throw in some antibiotics at some point. Next time you go to the doctor or something.
    Hatorian
  • Yea. We actually have a pretty good stock of antibiotics cuz every time we go to the doctor they perscribe them but I’m a firm believer of not using them unless absolutely necessary. Probably have 5 years worth of random medicine we got that we just stocked away cuz we don’t feel the need to use it for the standard flu or minor sickness.

id also add a fuck ton of toilet paper to my list just thinking about it.

  • Singapore is the second largest port in the world and there is probably 100+ tankers sitting outside the port waiting every day to deliver whatever goods they have. Definitely would organise raiding parties if shit went down to go out to them and commandeer whatever goods they were holding.

Power's on in Humboldt and surrounding counties, and we're all thankful for that.  Back to work as normal.  Is it wrong that I was hoping for it to last longer so that I could have a little mini-staycaytion?  I know, I know, but still.

Edit:  this is an interesting read:

Be careful with that.  Most medications expire because they become less effective, though some antibiotics expire because they become MUCH more effective and become dangerous.  (Tetracycline, any liquid antibiotics, insulin and nitroglycerin should all be discarded when past their expiration.  This is not an exhaustive list.)

  • I moved up to Marin County a few months ago from the city, our apartment wasn't and still isn't on the list of planned outages but we just got a nice surprise outage across about half the city including downtown. RIP my fridge/freezer.

Yeah, no end in sight up here. The real tragedy of this thing: Who knows when I will be able to get to El Camino.

PG&E is estimating my power won’t be back until Sunday night.
  • Couple fires around us over here. Hopefully this isn’t a repeat of last year

I'm using this to track, but let me know if there are any better sites anyone might like to recommend.

Fire on San Bruno Mountain.  Fire in Moraga, CA.   Some really big fires near LA.  Stay safe folks.  This is getting scary.  I got my Mother-in-law and Father-in-law visiting my wife's brother and his wife in San Jose right now.  Getting a little worried for them as well at the Cali Bald Movers.

Ready for round two tomorrow!  We're losing power at around noon, for up to 4 days.  *sigh*

Wishing you the best @Michelle. The last time I checked I was in the clear.

  • Hope all you guys are ok. It’s scary to think that even without any catastrophe or major government breakdown people could be without support for almost a week. Imagine if the big one hits Cali.

Thanks!  It's weather related - the winds here are expected to get up to 45 mph tomorrow so best to be safe than sorry, I suppose.  This one is expected to last up to 4 days though.  They're saying estimated restoral will be mid-Monday but we will see what happens.

  • We lost power Saturday too, they told us it was coming back yesterday but it never did. We're just rolling into the next one. Even a 12 hour break to take a hot shower and charge things up would have been really nice. All the grocery stores around me that have backup power are just filled with really desperate looking people and anything you want is empty. What makes it even worse is there is almost no messaging about any of this. We were a maybe up until about 2 hours before it went out on Saturday, and they've never even given a real timeline just telling us to be prepared for over 48 hours. Trying to plan around this is impossible, especially since my work is in the same boat and they're insisting we all come in every day in case it comes back on. We're on day 4 with no timeline at all for when this is over.

Fuck PG&E forever, they can't keep getting away with this bullshit and they never should have been able to let their infrastructure crumble while they just fuck around with billions of dollars to boost their stock prices to make sure all the execs get their 100s of millions in bonuses. They should have never been allowed to essentially buy the regulatory board that was set up to keep them in check. This entire thing feels retaliatory for getting sued from all the death and destruction they caused last year and it isn't even working, one of their downed powerlines is what caused the fire raging up north and they shut off all the power so nobody could communicate during the evacuations. It's an absolute shit show and the new normal for fall in California, they're predicting needing to do this for at least the next decade.
    MichelleChinaski
  • This is insane. Is there someone to blame or is the power company and the government both acting like children letting down the people they are supposed to be serving?

Good luck to everyone out there.

I'm so over all of the confusion and conflicting information coming to us from PG&E and our local OES.  No one knows if/when our power is going out again and we're all just waiting (supposedly sometime today, although the time for it has changed about 4 times now).  Local businesses (mom & pops) are losing money and people are losing wages with the shutdowns.  It's been down into the '30s at night and when the power *was* off over the weekend, those of us without a generator, fireplace, or wood burning stove froze our butts off.  I hope the rest of my Cali peeps are faring well under the circumstances!
