Save the Expanse - Bald Move edition

Hi Everyone,
I’ve just listened to the last lunch and heard about Bald Move potentially dropping the coverage of the Expanse due to the unforgiving Netflix style release schedule combined with relatively low ratings and release date so close to Christmas.

This is an absolute bummer for me as it is my favorite show on tv right now, and the only reason I’m watching it in the first place it because of Bald Move. I do sympathize with the situation Jim and A.Ron are founding themselves in but also feel like this will be a major loss for the Expanse community.

I understand that a full coverage might not be possible due to the circumstances but perhaps if we show enough enthusiasm here we can hope for a 20 minutes, instant talk style coverage just not to keep the fans hanging?

The expanse community might be small, but we are extremely loyal and passionate and growing bigger every season.

Anyway who’s on board? Let’s show some support Belta Lowda!

  • I am exactly the same. I just heard that news and I also started the expanse because of bald move. Absolutely gutted. I started a previous thread about amazon's decision and thought it was a bad idea just like the guys do but I didn't think it would be a cause for themselves to cover it. Thankfully there are a lot of other expanse podcasts that have popped up but not the same.

Same. I’m even cool with them covering it like they’re currently covering S3 of rick and morty. That season has been out for years now and I’m still really enjoying listening to their take on it. Regardless of how The Expanse is released, an episode a week pod would be rad in my book. Here’s hoping other bald movers would feel the same.

Man as much as I love the expanse, it’s just not right for them to be sitting and bing watching a tv show when they should be spending quality time with their families making cherished memories over the holidays.

It reminds me of this old Mr Show sketch (min 1:53).  https://youtu.be/mRntutn8udw

I have an alternative idea, what if we made a bald move fan podcast? We split the series up and cover it amongst the fans. Me and a buddy of mine(who has read all the books) could cover at least an ep or two. Also I would love to hear what some of the long time BM fans think about the show.

  • What a bummer. The Expanse is the premier show on TV for me. If this season delivers on the promise of the trailer with the JFK speech it is going to be great.

I am totally down with The Expanse but after listening to the latest empire business and lunch with J & A & C, l realize the difficulty for them. That said I would be happy with a preview cast, a mid season thoughts pod and a final wrap up on bald move tv. The timing and nature of the binge dump is just too much and the audience numbers are just not there.

  • They should just both read all the books and do a book-club podcast on their own schedule. Plenty of awesome-ness to discuss, no show required!

Although once S4 drops I will be bummed not to have extensive Bald Move coverage right after I watch it to get me through the holidays with the in-laws. But I don't want that to come at the expense of Jim & ARon enjoying their holidays!

  • I would be surprised if they don’t do anything for it, even if it’s a one off BMTV style. They both seem very passionate about it.
  • I think the answer is 10 episode live watch the day it drops  B)

Ouch, I specifically binge watched the season over the end of summer so I could be caught up to listen to the eventual podcast.

I mean I loved the show, so it's not like a loss or anything, but the third season podcast was like a dangling carrot to keep me going.

Haven't listened to lunch yet so first I'm hearing of it. I totally get it, but can't help but be bummed.

I guess it's a case of hindsight is 20/20. I would gladly give up Rick and Morty and a bunch of other shows to get the expanse.

  • Isn’t the real compromise to do a 24 hour expanse watch on Twitch?

  • Didn't they want to bring comissions back? I have a candidate ...
Get the podcastica guy back to share the load or something.

  • While i would love to have full coverage of The Expanse from Bald Move I also want them to enjoy the time with their families during the holidays.  Amazon did what they thought was the best for The Expanse and it might be with everybody on "Christmas Break" but it doesn't bode well with our favorite podcasters.  I would say do a podcast after their holiday break but at that point I think the downloads would suffer as most people have already watched the entire season and moved onto whatever is next.  I'm hoping for a preview podcast and a post series coverage.  It's far from ideal but in the end it's on Amazon for releasing the series the way they are and when they are.

  • 100% agree about wanting the guys to enjoy the break with their families. I would be totally happy to wait for the podcast until the new year, but than I understand not everyone is as patient/obsessive about their media as I am and a lot of people might bail if the pod doesn’t come out right away.

Saying that I have read all of the books and I can’t imagine the show not growing massively season by season from now on. It would be such a shame for them to give up too early on a story filled with so much potential!

I really love MrXs idea of the book based podcast on the independent schedule as well, and yeah I’m right here with you MattyWeaves, I couldn’t care less for Rick and Morty stuff.

Anyway I think this is the first time I’ve ever been so bummed out about any of BM decisions. The pods that were dropped before were always related to the tv shows turning bad, and this will be the first one killed off in its prime (no pun intended). I also don’t feel like I can get fully pissed off with Amazon as they rescued the show in the first place. Not a fan of dropping entire content at once 10 days before Christmas though.

As a side note, do any of you recommend some other Expanse podcasts? I tried the Churn and loved listening to the cast, Ty and Daniel but the hosts were so annoying I gave up after season two.
  • Dropping series all at once is so difficult for podcasting, I know as a binger myself, its hard to stop and go listen to a podcast, despite loving the BM a lot.  That happened to me with Stranger Things, I would go back and listen to the podcasts but by the end of stranger things, I probably missed the last few pods because I knew everything that happened. Series that drop all at once lends itself to more of a preview podcast, and a wrap up podcast, with maybe a mid-point podcast. I am bummed as well, but its just tough, and the timing isn't great either.

Yeah, if it's a show I can binge, I never listen to a podcast. Podcasts are good for scratching an itch while you're waiting for the next episode. That's why I found Bald Move in the first place.

Ok, I have an idea. I doubt we can afford a plane...BUT, how much can we pay Jack to repeatedly ride in front of A.Ron's house on his bike with a, "Save The Expanse" banner flying behind him?

  • Preview cast and wrap-up cast will probably have to do it given the binge-dump-over-the-holiday decision at Amazon.

If they’re going to do it this way, providing screeners so folks can produce content in advance would be a good move for Amazon.

If the podcasts get 100,000 downloads or something, then I think we may be able to justify backfilling full coverage in some way.

Yeah, getting them screeners would be a dream!  As for podcast downloads I’m really concerned that it might be a self fulfilling prophecy type of scenario. Less BM Content = fewer downloads. Also less BM content during the big expansion of the show (I do believe that moving it from Syfy to Prime will increase the viewership massively) = fewer regular fans of the podcast in future seasons.

Anyway I think I’m slowly getting through all the stages of grief on this one, hopefully gonna settle on acceptance pretty soon.

  • They laid out their position and it's completely understandable. Also it's pretty evident the amount of work that goes into Bald Move. If Cecily and Alexis weren't around I'm sure HDM wouldn't have coverage at all. I truly believe the guys aren't happy about it. They are the reason I started The Expanse. I'll miss the coverage for sure but I get it.

Solo talk media’s Tales of the Rocinante is a really good Expanse cast. I believe they are gonna try to podcast each episode even with the binge dump.

  • Seeing you guys suggesting good quality alternatives.. Maybe this is time to introduce the concept of BMAs (Baldmove Alternatives) where the guys and gals of bm don't have time for a show.. Im not sure but a BMA thread for each show could allow our community to share their favourite casts when BM aren't covering something?? Just a thought.
  • Mind you, after spending a couple of decades in the IT industry, I am heavily dependent on TLAs - three letter acronyms :)
    JaimieT
  • That's a shame. Maybe they do like others have said (preview, midpoint, end) during the holidays and then come back later and do full episode shows when it isn't as hectic.

It's a great show and it's a shame to lose the full coverage. Hard to argue with their logic considering the timing and the numbers for the show. Maybe they could slip it into a Bald Move TV episode somewhere down the line.

Maybe the future of TV podcasting is going to be the weekly show where people talk about the 5 or 6 shows they're watching and not so much the week-to-week dissection. It seems like more and more shows on the streaming networks are going to be dropped all at once like this. I don't find myself watching many things week-to-week anymore, so some of the value of Bald Move is it just lets me know which show to start after I finish the last one.
  • Well, that's a bummer.  The selfish part of me wishes the boys could just watch the episodes like any other television show and do it like they used to, but that is, indeed, selfish of me.  This podcast has been my favorite since Leftovers ended, so it's hard to see it go, especially since it seems like the show will be released this way going forward.  I do wonder what the numbers would be like this season considering the show will probably have a much bigger audience.

Oh well.  I'll have to take a look at the alternatives here and see if any can hook me.

  • Add me to your informal petition.

Going from active evangelists of The Expanse in one season to maybe-not first-class-coverage this season was a bit of whiplash, for me.

Maybe someone can invent them a portal gun or star-trek inspired time dilation device to be able to fit it all in.

  • I’m just finishing up season three and have listened to all their casts with the express purpose of catching up for the new series. Love the show, starting to read the books, and I too was really bummed to hear they might not cover it. I also understand their stance, but it is a serious bummer. I’m hoping they’ll provide something for us, but if not I shake my fist at Bezos!
  • I'm on book 4 and also listened to The Churn, the novella about Amos's origin. I've been waiting all year for The  Expanse to come back and a lot of my excitement has been in anticipation of the podcast. I get it, but it is super disappointing
