OF COURSE, Jared Leto!  Of-fucking-course it would be Jared Leto.

Imagine coming back from a 12-day Silence Meditation Retreat where you were completely cut-off from news and society.  So you exit this time capsule and you come back in the middle of the present-day situation.

Didn't someone here say they're from WV?  Who was that?  I have a decent amount of camping gear....you got a backyard?

Sorry, not real practical - My backyard is a mountain - you'd just roll down the hill, into a river and float off to Pittsburgh.

Are ya happy now?  We got our first identified case today.

'Four members of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets have tested positive for the virus. Kevin Durant announced he has it.'
  • Straight from a doctor in Italy: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/podcasts/the-daily/italy-coronavirus.html

    Some quotes:
    -------------
"Nothing is as before. I have been in my hospital every single day, 14 or 15 hours a day, to try and deal with the outbreak of coronavirus infection."

"Every day we receive on average, between 50-70 patient, with severe respiratory failure due to coronavirus infection. Every single day.  To describe my reality my hospital is - at least in Europe - a huge hospital with 1000 beds, but to receive every day between 50-70 patients with severe pneumonia due to coronavirus is impossible. You have to change your organization day by day."

"My colleagues, both physician and nurses, they cry every day."

"We have today 460 nurses at home, because they are sick."

"We are scared because on Friday, only in my hospital we had 20 deaths. For coronavirus, in one day."

"They cannot receive the relative in hospital, so the patients are alone, so they die alone. This is difficult for us..."
    ------------

I feel incredibly sad for their situation, and hope we still have enough time to avoid this same fate.

Same here, and I also sort of live on a mountain  (well halfway up a big hill).

@Flukes - How are things going out west?

I just got back from No Frills, Superstore, and Walmart.  They were all pretty bare, and not many people around.

I was out to Costco on Sunday and aside from the few well-publicized shortages, it was pretty normal. Fewer people there than usual though and I was only about an hour after opening.

I haven't been out much aside from walking the dog. The kids are all home all the time, so it feels sort of like Christmas vacation except I'm working.

Restaurants are mostly open but some places (Starbucks, Tim Horton's, and others) are only serving for take-out - seating is blocked off, pushed to the side, or removed. Retailers seem to be mostly restricting hours, but a few have closed outright. Indigo is a notable example.

Tim Horton's and McDonald's (at least the one in Walmart) are only serving drive-thru and takeout here as well.

No kids here for me, but I am struggling with my adopted cats pretty badly.

And I'm in the midst of a civil suit (that I won), but they spelled my name wrong.

And I feel like I'm coming down with a chest cold.  Hopefully, it's just from working 3 12 hour night shifts last weekend.

And there's a case of it about 5 mins from me, which is kind of surreal in a town of less than 10,000.

Everytime I go to sleep, I wake up in this nightmare world. I took a cat nap just now. There's that brief moment of shock where you remember what has changed. You fan through the last five days like a flip book. Your heart grips; adrenaline starts again. I look forward to the day I don't wake up startled.

I wish I had a house. My leasing office is giving up. Today was another email, more giving up, more isolation. Now ordering anything online is uncertain. Too bad with the stores closing. I'm sure they'll be happy to take my rent this month, though!

Australian government keeps dithering around the edges. Thousands of our doctors are signing pleas to shut down but the Chief Medical Officer is a government stooge and won’t do anything that might take money from big businesses. They won’t close schools. They won’t test anyone who hasn’t been overseas or had contact with a confirmed case. It’s a shambles.

    The end is coming.

We have 3 of the 4 horsemen.

    Pestilence: the virus
famine: Africa getting hit hard by locust and stores running out of food
war: always war but North Korea acting really stupid and Iran may explode anytime now

    death is coming too.

It was nice knowing you all.

    Oh also this...

I made the (responsible) decision tonight to postpone my 2-week dream, bucket list vacation to England.  I was scheduled to fly out on May 2nd.  I’m so disappointed. :disappointed:  It’s the right thing to do though, and I would feel guilty if I’d still went despite everything.  Plus, now I have a chance to save more money before I go.  But still.

I can't imagine. My dream vacation is Japan; I've been saving for it for a while. I doubt anyone will be traveling in May, but regardless of that it has to feel pretty awful. I'm sorry. :(

Thanks, @JaimieT.  I'm taking some solace in the fact that it's not outright cancelled, just postponed, and I'll have more money to do things with when I *do* go, and I feel good about making the responsible choice.  I've just been looking forward to it for so long and the date was so close.  But, I get a voucher for the full value of my flight, good for 12 months from the date of the flight.  Hopefully I'll be able to go in late summer or early fall.

Just FYI I’m not serious. Of course there’s going to be a book or movie that vaguely resembles what is happening. There’s billions of pieces of media. It’s bound to hit.

  • Self-isolation is like my superpower, so I'm not really worried about myself (plus the grocery store ain't likely to sell out of tofu), but it's incredibly frustrating to have people I care about that aren't being quite so precautious.  I gently suggested to my sister on Friday that maybe her bf shouldn't come over and spend two day with her and her kids after serving people drinks all week in downtown San Diego.  Advice failed.  Just today my mother, who's has respiratory issues anyway and says she's worried, took the girls to go buy a new guinea pig.  Really important they came with you right now, thanks, ma.  She says they used hand sanitizer.  And tomorrow it's a beach cabin trip with them and an older aunt and uncle who've probably been in the casinos all week.  Fucking hell, it's irritating to care about people when they repeatedly make bad decisions.  This is why I never wanted kids, yet here I am, anyway, pulling my hair out.

I also had to postpone my trip to Europe. I had planned to go the final week of May. It sucks, but like you said, it’s the right thing to do. Because for a trip like that, you need to absolutely maximize your time there. Can’t do that in good conscience with the situation we’re currently in.
