We're now up to two GOP senators who sold off stocks after a (non-public) COVID-19 briefing in late January. So they were worried enough to protect their financial interest but not do their duty to help protect us from an imminent pandemic. Yikes.
This is absolutely insane. People in power who are greedy and corrupt, imagine that. Should be forced to resign.

Not just protect their investments... profit. Let the crash happen and buy low.

While we plebs angst over rape option #1 and rape option #2, which is either letting the crash rape our retirement savings or panic selling to mitigate losses. Both shitty choices giving us the illusion of freedom.

For the rich, the stock market is either a bull or on sale.

I’ve been without power since Saturday (due to a huge snow storm) and no sign of it coming back because there is a shelter in place now, so no one to work on the power lines. They were estimating for Friday evening. But now that the shelter in place has happened, they’ve stopped all estimations. I’ve gotten very used to the dark and freezing weather. I’m an essential employee for the county, so I’ve been forced out of my house for that. My food has all gone bad at this point. Outside of chips and the like...I know this is peanuts compared to what others are facing. But it’s rough out there.

    @Garthgou81

Feeling for you buddy.  They HAVE TO be working on a way to get power back up.  You can't tell folks to shelter in place with no power or heat.

@Garthgou81 - That is my nightmare, with this situation. I feel for you. Please keep us updated!
  • @Garthgou81 That sounds really crummy. I hope they are able to get your power back on soon. Thanks for continuing to go to work and keep things running for everyone else.

First person arrested around the UK (Isle of Man specifically, so not *technically* UK) for breaking their quarantine today.

Thanks all. Yeah. It is an awfully grimy feeling to not be able to take a warm shower to begin with. But with all going on I feel absolutely filthy to be washing my hands in cold water. I have a routine now though. I wash my hands as much as humanly possible at work, charge up all my devices and backup chargers, come home, and just kind of plant myself in bed after bundling up in layers. Oh and booze.

Its also a weird thing that I've experienced before where you just can't sleep because you are anxious about the power. Also...since I live in the woods, we get critters around. Let me tell you, mountain lions make the worst fucking sounds on the planet. They are scary enough on their own, but laying without power in the absolute dark and then hearing this are the things nightmares are made of (they came around last night): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxo8X5uIWRE

I fell behind on this chat so I just said screw it and jumped to the last page. What a bunch of bullshit about the senators selling off stock. I actually am very lucky and have a bunch of spare money saved up so I bumped my 401k contributions considerably for the foreseeable future.

@Garthgou81 I'm sorry you're going through what you are. As someone in a cold state I couldn't imagine not having power for several days, that sounds miserable. Hang in there and hopefully they get it turned back on soon.

PG&E should be part of the essential workers.  I can’t imagine at all that they would leave you out of power and not be out to work on the lines at all.

OMG we lost power for a week and I was sick as a dog, a few years ago.  It was terrible but we pulled thru.  I hope your electricity gets sorted soon.

LA County lockdown is in full effect but on St Paddy's day I saw bars full with mostly young people yikes.

I am glad we have the Bald Move community and forum and podcasts to lift our spirits and commiserate.   :)

I have a very similar personality to Hank Green. So I don't know how much this will apply to people here, but I loved this:

Congressional insider trading was considered legal in a grey-area kind of way up until 2012 when a law was passed that was supposed to prevent it. After that, congress quietly passed several more laws to make it really hard to track and/or prove. While it didn't make it legal again, it did make it kind of 'unknowable' in the legal sense (even when it's obvious)

PSA for anyone stuck at home with kids - there’s an English personal trainer called Joe Wicks who is going to be doing a half hour PE class for kids Monday to Friday as of next week live streaming on his YouTube channel The Body Coach at 9am UK time. The videos will also be going on his YouTube channel for those not in the same time zone or who can’t do it live.

Joe is a lovely guy and very passionate about getting kids moving - his workouts are simple and can be done at home and his enthusiasm is very infectious.

He also just said on Instagram he is putting together some videos of exercises that elderly and mobility-impaired people can do at home which should be going up on his YT Channel next week, so if you don’t have kids but you do have elderly parents, watch out for those too.

so did another store run and they had a good amount of TP. they are however limiting the amount you can buy. so check this out, apparently most places are noticing a high volume of people that hoarded last week are trying to return items and the stores are not allowing returns.

I see we’ve finally found Costco’s line when it comes to returns!

@Chinaski Fuck those people! They should be able to return the items but only receive half of the value. Or something along those lines. I don’t know what the exact solution is. Call it the asshole tax! And use the profits for hospitals or whatever good cause you can come up with.

Our government is unlikely to force any lockdowns because their strategy in a crisis is always to just look the other way and whistle, but I’m getting the important deliveries out of the way just in case.

    Wow, an entire week?

It's become common here that people lose power in the winter once or twice for several days to a week or so.

I'll extend the same invitation to you that I did to @JaimieT ;to come stay here, even if you aren't a lesbian.

Anyone else losing it yet? One of my bartender friends already is. Hasn't even been out of work a week and he's already remaking movies:
My money is on him making a remake of his remake before this whole thing is over.

@Dee I wish I had a bottle of Koonunga Hills left. I'd internet cheers you. I do have about a half a bottle of Penfolds Tawny knocking around. Love me some Penfolds. They make a phenomenal Shiraz.
