Coronavirus / COVID-19

  • Dr. Drew is such an idiot. He was calling this thing overblown and a "press-induced panic" up through late March, assuring people that it's way less deadly than the flu. There's even a caller on the supercut who says something about this being COVID-19, so "there have been at least 18 others" and he says, "Oh yeah." First of all, there are hundreds or thousands of different coronaviruses, but they're not the same as this one, and it's "19" because it was discovered in 2019. I'm sure you all knew that. Is he that uninformed? And if so, why has he been giving his "expert" medical advice about this on every show that would book him for all of February and March and only decided to take it serious at the very end of March?

  • It’s also normal for men from the Asian subcontinent to hold hands. And this is a very bad idea right now.

Things are ramping up in Houston. Positive cases for the last 4 days. +304, +222, +184, then today is +533
  • My county is reporting 754 cases today. I think that other than the south Florida hotspot counties, we're the next highest. I also read that the neighboring county, which has 195 cases, isn't doing a good job with tracking or staying in touch with those who have tested positive, and when they did get in touch with them, they found at least 5 who were out an about running errands after KNOWING they were positive.

He's been full of shit since loveline (he's had some failed shows since then I think, but he's always spouted bullshit). He was an addiction specialist even back when he was actually doctoring, so he doesn't have any particular expertise in epidemiology (most doctors don't to be fair). He's been your classic libertarian asshole for at least a decade, but I guess that makes perfect sense for someone who wants to hang out with Adam Corolla, and asshole in his own right.

Yeah, that's for sure. He has been in trouble in the past for taking payments from drug companies while pushing their products on his shows. A paid commercial without saying so much. And for his "distance diagnosing" where he likes giving his "expert" opinion about the medical condition of people like Hillary Clinton based on absolutely nothing. He's a total quack.

An addiction specialist who made a fortune exploiting the addicted no less. The kill ratio on his rehab shows is less than great

I loved Loveline as a teenager.  I've recently wanted more of it, and found out he and Corolla do a podcast on podcastone network.  The episodes are generally around 35 minutes, and it feels like they are nearly 50% ad reads, 30% BS talk, and 20% listener questions.  Full disappointment.  I did find a podcast that is putting out old episodes of loveline on the regular while trying to catalog all of the episodes and make them available with decent quality audio.  It's called G.I.O. Get it on, and they have 1446 episodes so far.  I like to put them on while I fall asleep, just like back in high school but without ads!

I woke up today a bit short of breath, and it feels like my throat/airway is tightened a bit.  There is also pain across my upper chest.   No fever, some sniffles, a little dry cough (one cough that was a bit deeper when I woke up).  This may just be non-Covid flu (it's been going around here), but I'm keeping an eye on it.  If this worsens or if I develop an elevated temperature, I'll see if I can be tested.

As far as I know, I haven't had contact with anyone who has it - then again, the rate of community exposure and transmission is increasing here.

Thinking happy thoughts for now, in the meantime.

That's not a fun feeling, thinking you might have it. Yeah, focus on happy thoughts and SELF-CARE. Do all your favorite things. Even if you have a normal thing, this is not a mentally fun time to be sick. Take care of yourself. Feel better.

    Thanks, my friend. :)
What kind of work do you do?  If you go on voluntary furlough, are you still paid  with PTO hours (if you have any accrued) or do you have to draw unemployment?  I'm hoping you don't have to furlough at all!

Certainly, but the latter has to be better in the long term. I can't imagine "Big Robot, Inc" has a top tier voluntary furlough package. Kind of flies right in the face of their ultimate goal of replacing every last man, woman, and child in the worldwide workforce.

Also, Jesus @Michelle .... Take care of yourself and check your vitals whenever you can if you're able to.

Hope it’s just one of the usual bugs. If it’s any consolation supposedly almost 90% of cases start with fever, so not having a fever is a good sign.

@Michelle, I sell robots & ‘hard’ automation, NOT to take jobs, but make more jobs, bring back manufacturing jobs, keep jobs, make manufacturing safer so people go home at night with 2 arms and giving new tools to workers to do things a human couldn't do anyways.  But yeah to the general public I'm probably seen as the "he's terkin err jerbz!" guy.   We're a super small outfit, less than 50.  But I have been the primary revenue source for years now so guys and their families depend on me: electricians, programmers, engineers, welders, mechanical assembly guys, etc.  So I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.  The last 3-4 years of my life have been incredibly stressful.  Hopefully we can weather this latest storm.  I have a few things that hopefully can land in the next few weeks, but so much of our business is Oil & Gas related and we've been getting it from both sides with Covid-19 and the Russian-Saudi oil price war.

Really do hope you're okay.  This Covid-19, I'm not gonna lie, has turned me into a border-line hypochondriac! Every ache or cough or sniffle gets me worried.

I'm trying!  Keeping busy with work (wfh) and not letting the background get too quiet, lots of distractions so I don't get too in my own head about it.   Drinking lots of Bai to stay hydrated (I'm addicted to the blueberry and cherry flavors).  I need some good Cali beach time!  It's too cold here though.  Calgon, take me away to a hot tropical island somewhere!  Thanks for the well wishes. :)

That sounds like an amazing job and a cool industry to be in, but ugh, I can imagine the stress you're under with all this right now.  I'm so sorry.  Hang in there.

Yeah, not having a fever is what is keeping me from slightly freaking out right now.
I'm just drinking lots of Bai juices and hot coffee and taking it easy as much as I can today, despite still having to get some work done.  Being good to myself and paying attention to how I'm feeling.  Like Jaimie said, self-care.

The stupidity continues across America, but especially in some of the spots where you'd expect it. This article talks about groups in Idaho resisting the stay-at-home order, because you know, "muh freeeeedumb!" On one hand, I feel like fine, let them infect each other, but the problem is, whether they like it or not they live in a society where they have a responsibility to not endanger other people unnecessarily. By choosing to be assholes about a reasonable request, they're endangering every person they encounter (like essential workers) who didn't get to make a choice to stay away from them. And they will be clogging up the hospitals because of their selfishness. It makes me so angry.

"At a time when health officials say social-distancing measures are vital to avert catastrophic outbreaks of the kind that could overwhelm hospitals — as happened in Italy — Idaho’s tensions threaten to undermine compliance. While the state was one of the last in the country to identify a coronavirus case, it now has far more cases per capita than California. Blaine County, which includes the popular Sun Valley ski resort, now has the largest per capita concentration of coronavirus cases in the nation."

On a personal note about the dumpster fire that 2020 is, I think my nephew got a little cabin fever and decided to take a motorcycle ride over the weekend. He crashed and broke his back, severely damaging his spinal cord, and now he has no feeling from his mid-back on down and will probably never walk again. He's 23 and alone in the hospital because nobody can go see him due to the virus, and he's having to deal with the fact that his life has been turned completely upside down. My heart breaks for him, and there's not a thing I can do to help except offer moral support from 1000+ miles away. An accident like that could happen anytime to anyone, but being in the hospital right now is about the last place you want to be. Stay home, stay safe everybody.
