What is your most mundane celebrity encounter?

Borrowed and/or stolen from Twitter... what is your most mundane celebrity encounter?

I once saw Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, and Dicky Barrett outside of Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.

I saw Huell Howser taping an episode of California's Gold in Ferndale at the entrance to the fairgrounds during the county fair.  I also saw Joan Baez at a ren faire in Marin County the early 90s.   My boyfriend (at the time) and I walked past her and didn't realize who she was for a moment although we thought she looked familiar, turned around, and she was signing an autograph.  Meh, I was never into her.

I’ve only met Jonathan banks at a work event he was there for by a security company that used him for a commercial and marketing.

Ben Folds got in my way when I was waiting to get served at Borders and he was looking at all the trinkets and crap they have at the counter and completely oblivious that I was trying to get past him. I got pretty pissed off with him, I am an impatient shopper.

Just FYI, @dee is winning this thread so far.

  • I saw Rick Pitino betting on something while I was watching some games at the MGM Grand Sports betting area. I was thinking to myself, surely that isn’t allowed, but he wasn’t trying to hide so I guess it is.

This falls pretty far down on the list of things Rick Pitino would get in trouble for

Played a show at the Whisky in Hollywood.  After our set as I was tearing down my gear, dude I had noticed watching towards the front of stage came up to me and told me he really dug my bass playing.  Introduced himself as Ryan. I shook his hand and said “Right on, cool, thanks man!” and finished packing up (they run things very tight and really rush bands to get off stage).

It wasn’t until the ride back to San Diego that it dawned on me that the guy was Ryan Martinie, one of my fucking music idols.  The reason I didn’t recognize him is because back then his band (Mudvayne) performed in costume / face paint, so I only had a very vague idea of what he actually looked like.

More mundane because of who the “celebrity” was than the actual encounter itself, I suppose.  Verne Troyer was there that night too.

Ran into Kevin Nealon and his wife the actress who plays Jessica Wick on Parks & Rec on a hiking trail in Yosemite last year. Sat next to them at dinner later that day at the hotel.

Was at the M Hotel in Las Vegas when they were filming that Top Chef year; I asked Padma Lakshmi to move her stuff off the weight bench she wasn't using, before I realized who she was in her sweats.

Keira Knightley once walked right into me on a street in central London, knocked my coffee out of my hand. Didn't say sorry.

Also, Boris Becker in a Nando's in Oxford.

Jerry Springer in an elevator at a hotel in Branson, MO. I guess he was hosting a stage show version of The Price is Right at the time and we must've been staying at the same hotel. We  both said "hello" and that is it. Part of me wanted to start whisper chanting, "Jerry. Jerry. Jerry".

I got to go to a taping of the Jerry Springer show in 2005. My friend won a call-in radio contest and won airfare, hotel, tickets to the show and the night before we went to a boutique bowling alley with an open bar and everyone got to meet Jerry and Steve and get headshots. It was awesome.

I live near Cincinnati and Jerry has strong ties here (former mayor of the city until he wrote a check to a sex worker) and he does his podcast at a local venue. We were on the show twice and he was so gracious. He acts like the Jerry Springer Show embarrasses him so much yet he has done it for so long. I wonder if he is just doing it for the paycheck or it's an act and he secretly loves it.

It was funny because I had met A.Ron a few times before and I think Cecily only once but it was very brief at the burrito meet up so I don't think she knew who I was. I happened to look over and recognize A.Ron's beard. I started waving and she looked at me like "who the fuck...?" and got A.Ron's attention and luckily he recognized me and I didn't just look like a weirdo. More than usual.

When I was managing a movie theater in Stone Mountain GA, around 2015-2016 Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas of TLC came in on two occasions to see a movie.  Some of my employees asked if they could take a picture with her, but she politely declined because she was in sweats and not camera ready.  I had to warn the employees not to harass her when she came out of the movie, and just let her have a peaceful evening.

She was quiet, kind, and friendly.  I had no interaction with her apart from saying "Thank you for coming" on her way out, which was our standard exit greeting as people exited the auditorium.

Oddly, I probably would have internally geeked out a bit over Somerhalder. Ha!

I guess my two best answers for me are when both Sam Elliot and I were waiting for a plane to come in at the Burbank Airport. He was on the other side of the baggage claim (which is where you wait for arriving passengers there). Didn't interact with him at all, but I've always thought even higher of him for it. There is something so kindly humanizing about waiting for an extended stretch at an airport, especially one that is lacking in comforts.
I exchanged "bro nods" with Jason Mantzoukas waiting for the same flight out of Boston. I liked that he was wearing a The Good Place hat.

My favorite missed opportunity was when the owner of a tuxedo shop below our office was moving out (he had just sold his business) and apparently Jeff Bridges and Jonathan Banks were helping him move. Unfortunately I didn't find out until afterwards so I've never been able to know what exactly that added up to. I've replaced it in my mind with The Dude and Mike Ehrmantrout arguing over the best way to move a heavy cabinet, carrying it at either end. Right below my fucking feet. I can't believe I didn't happen down to get the mail during that window of time.

  • My buddy was getting married at a pretty nice hotel. Him and I were walking through the lobby and ran into Ron White. He asked us why we were all dressed up, my buddy said he was getting married. Ron replied sorry bout your luck. I invited Ron to the wedding reception, he said if he was back at the hotel in time he’d stop by. He obviously didn’t stop by but unbeknownst to use he had already ran into the bride earlier and snapped a photo with her.

Oh here's one I forgot about! Definitely my most mundane obviously since I almost completely forgot about it:

Fucking TUCKER CARLSON at hotel check-in at The Mirage in Las Vegas like maybe 8 years ago. Fucking hate that guy.  Even back then.

edit: another one.  On a bike ride on the White Oak Bayou trail in Houston. Lo and behold in a parking lot 9 o'clock to me, Dog the Bounty Hunter and his wife with their shooting crew.

My wife and I were walking in Yellow Springs OH and came across Dave Chapelle just standing there talking to some friends (he has a house in YS). We locked eyes and my eyes must have lit up, and he knowingly said “How Ya Doin...”. We smiled back and respected his space, just kept walking. I think most folks who have lived or spent any time around Yellow Springs have seen him at some point. Such a small town and he isn’t too shy about being out I don’t think.

We stayed in a pretty nice new hotel in downtown Los Angeles a few summers ago.  It was pretty swanky with like a rooftop bar/club situation, restaurant, etc., but we got a really good rate because it was new and they even gave us free drink tickets to entice us to go to their lobby lounge bar thing.

Anyway, after a full day at Disneyland, and driving back in massive LA traffic, we got back to the hotel and even though we were dead tired, we decided what the heck, might as well use those free drink tickets before bed. So we're sitting there waiting...semi falling asleep and out of the corner of my eye, I see who I think is Snoop Dogg walk in the lobby and sit down in the chair across from us.  I get my husbands attention to confirm, which he does, and we are just immediately so embarrassed and uncomfortable because we were not in the best shape after walking around Disney all day (sweaty and rumpled).  So we hightailed it back to our room as soon as our drinks arrived, trying to avoid any contact whatsoever.

Not the best impression probably, haha

I was in The Hat Store here in Houston buying a new cowboy hat. There was only one other customer in the store. It was Lyle Lovett. I just walked over introduced myself and told him how much I liked his music. He shook my hand and told me I picked the best possible place to buy a hat.

I was on the same flight as Mark Henry when I was heading back from NYC last year. He was sitting right near me (pre-flight) and I just said “Hey Mark, I loved watching you wrestle” he said thanks and we exchanged a quick fist bump. He was cool to fans who went up to him and asked for a picture. Most of them were kids.

And yes, the man is massive. Just a specimen. Hard to believe that I’m the same species as him.

  • When I first moved to LA I worked for a woman who had a coffee shop and gift basket business in Santa Monica. I delivered the baskets randomly around town on my bike. Coming back from one delivery I came back in and Ray Liotta was sitting at the coffee bar. The owner asked where I parked my bike and Ray said, "What kind of bike?!" I said, "Giant. It's a mountain bike" knowing he thought we meant motorcycle. He just said, "Oh" and turned back to his coffee.

What might make it not mundane is that he was wearing a baby blue velour track suit.
