I honestly don't see why everyone isn't quarantining like bubble boy. If you're fortunate enough to be able to work from home, stay home except for essential trips. How hard is it to watch a bunch of TV, read some books, and stay alive? I don't get it. But I guess I'm more of an introvert than most people.

So yesterday, Florida reported 11,433 new cases, for a 17.7% positivity rate. Disney World reopens at reduced capacity today. They are taking the precautions they can, but it still seems incredibly risky to me. Florida's unemployment system is terrible though, and a lot of workers have no choice but to go back to work. They're doing temperature checks, but not testing. Universal Studios has already been open since early June, but I haven't seen much about attendance. Nobody is doing contact tracing, so it's not like anyone is tracking outbreaks. It's so widespread that it would be pointless now anyway.
As in many places, they're planning on opening schools here the first week of August. I don't have kids, but I sure wouldn't want to be sending them off to school if I did, and the teachers I know are legitimately freaked out. Gov. DeSantis said the other day that if you can go to Home Depot or Walmart, you can go to school. Because, you know, that's the same thing??? A large warehouse you can get in and out of quickly vs. a small space with at least 20 kids packed in for hours and hours, 5 days a week.
Not feeling optimistic here. Oh, and my mother's nursing home had 3 employees test positive. I don't know what capacity they work in, and they're all quarantined now, but the way this rips through nursing homes is so scary. She has advanced dementia so she's not going to know to be worried, but I dread the thought of her suffering alone if she gets it.
Ugh, sorry to be such a downer. I'm just so fed up with how we've been abandoned by state and federal government, and at the idiots who won't wear a fucking mask. There's actually a restaurant here advertising a party today with free food for "patriots" and no masks allowed. WTF is wrong with people?!
I really feel for you, @Marci. I just can’t believe how bad it is in the US and how so many people just don’t seem to care. It’s insane. All you can do is take care of yourself, I guess. I hope your mum is okay though. :-(
@bizmarkiefader Australia hasn’t been that big on mask wearing (though we’ve had a surge of new cases in Victoria so that state might start pushing it), but we also shut down almost completely pretty early on to flatten the curve. And even though most things have opened back up there are still social distancing rules in place and the borders are still ostensibly closed (anyone coming in to the country and to some states has to quarantine in a hotel for 14 days).
We’ve had about 7700 cases and 104 deaths so far. I know we have one tenth of America’s population, but we have a hell of a lot less than one tenth of their cases/deaths. Trump has a massive chunk of 128,000 deaths on his hands.

Still makes me nervous even though South Australia hasn’t had a case in a couple of weeks. Our border with Victoria was due to reopen on July 20 but that won’t be happening.

But in all seriousness it is absolutely insane it has taken this long for the f'n president to be slightly responsible and wear a mask in public. To be clear, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME he has done this. If I were a betting man, it will be the last but I hope not. He needs to help turn the tide of his followers.
He went to Walter Reed Hospital today. I know that this isn't the first time he has gone there since the pandemic started but I guess they were somehow able to convince him a mask-less trip this time would be too much.

Florida saw a 50% increase in new cases today, over 15k total reported in the last 24 hrs. 1,300 in Orange County alone. Great timing of that Disney opening.
Daily deaths are low, but the Sunday numbers are always an under report due to the extra certification they go through. This is going to continue to get much worse.
Edit: Just realized 15k new cases is more than South Korea has had the entire year. South Korea has twice the population of Florida in a higher population density.

It's almost like idiots are running 1/2 the states in the country. Wild. Meanwhile up here in NE (not saying we're perfect by any stretch, but at least we're doing this right) the most populous state has 300 new cases while the others are in the low double digits.
I just saw that 15K number and almost fell out of my chair. The article I read last week that said Florida is going "a million miles an hour in the wrong direction" was right.

Hey Dee, I'm not, I actually live on the Sunshine coast now, but haven't worked out how to change my location on here. I do have lots of friends still in Melbourne on lock down. On of my friends is 8 months pregnant and has had to do all online anti natal classes, with some talk of the Father not being allowed to stay at the hospital once the baby is born. Up here in queensland though things are slowly getting back to normal, but the floods of grey nomads coming over the border makes me very nervous, especially after the renewed cluster in NSW over the weekend. I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home so I will continue to self isolate too. I feel for you all in the US though, stay safe!

Jesus, that's scary. I was trying to explain to someone on Facebook who wanted to know "why the media doesn't cover the number of people recovered" by asking what exactly IS recovered? Because you can continue to have complications long after you're not shedding the virus and I wouldn't call that "recovered." I know people who have had it and are OK now. I know others who had mild cases yet still can't taste anything 4 months later, and fortunately for me, I haven't lost anyone yet or had anyone close to me intubated, but I've been reading about plenty of things like this to know it's a scary virus that we aren't going to fully understand for a long time. I am certainly staying in and taking every precaution I can.

The experimental vaccine, developed by Fauci's colleagues at the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc., will start its most important step around July 27: A 30,000-person study to prove if the shots really are strong enough to protect against the coronavirus.
Some "of course they did" news - An intelligence bulletin from American, British and Canadian officials indicates that a Russian hacking group targeted organizations that are working on possible coronavirus vaccines. The report, revealed Thursday, alleges that the hackers — who “almost certainly operate as part of Russian intelligence services” — attacked academic groups and labs that are involved in vaccine research. They are trying to steal the research.

I remember when we thought 2020 was going to be a shitshow cause of the election, and we haven't even gotten to that yet. We'll see how long 2020 can hold the shittiest year of our lifetimes times belt, it's going to have some competition with a potential covid rematch in 2021 and the climate crisis years we have coming up. Here in northern California we're about to enter the triple threat period of pandemic + climate crisis + capitalism with pandemic season overlapping wildfire season while our power company prepares to shut our power off for days to weeks at a time because they spent all their money managing stocks and buying out regulatory boards over the last few decades and their entire infrastructure is a crumbling fire hazard. Fun times ahead.
There's also a long-standing "hold my beer" type rivalry between Georgia and Florida, so we're definitely going to challenge Florida's record cases. We're screwed.
Florida posted another 10k cases today, meaning that if the state was a country we'd be neck and neck with South Africa for 6th world wide for total cases. We're at 15.7k cases per million. I'm honestly a little numb trying to wrap my head around the magnitude of this. Disney is still open, and still a statewide push by the Governor to open schools in a few weeks.
