Rifftrax

After hearing Aron talk about them here & there, I finally decided a couple of  months ago to check 'em out.  The first show of theirs that I watched was their Rifftrax Live - "Manos" The Hands of Fate and omg. :joy:
I've watched a lot of their stuff since then.  Their shorts are hilarious too.  One word: Norman. *groan of despair*  (Norman's catch phrase, lol)  :sweat_smile*    Also, I didn't know these were the guys behind MST3K, which I was never into (I think it's the robots and cheesy live action scripted stuff in between movies).  Anyway... is anyone else into these guys?

  • They’re so great!  They have a Twitch channel that streams 24/7.

*Highly* recommend the Star Wars and Twilight watchalongs.  Utterly hilarious.

The first Twilight riff is art.  "Line?" .... "Line?"

Some of their humor hasn't aged well (some pretty tone deaf LGBT jokes, especially in their older stuff), but hell neither has mine. It seems like that has trailed off over time.

I try to go to their live events they broadcast to theaters as much as I can, they're a lot of fun, and everything is funnier with a 100 people laughing with you. I'd love to go to the actual live show sometime when this covid shit is over!

  • I was lucky enough to attend a live MST3K during Comic-Con a few years ago.  It was wild.

One thing I've always wondered about is every few 'Trax, you'll hear Mike, Bill, and/or Kevin genuinely crack up at something the other said. And I know these are all scripted, but I wonder if they're doing because someone slightly altered the joke, or improvised something, or if they're just helping to sell the joke. I've often wondered if they do one raw pass where they're watching the movie for the first time and shooting off the hip, and if they use some of those takes to get genuine reactions.

But it also happens in the live events! Maybe it's just possible to crack up at something you've heard 10x before, of, god forbid, they're ACTING, haha.

I notice that too from time to time, but it always felt like they genuinely were cracking up.  Even if it's scripted and you've rehearsed it, if it's funny enough it'll still crack you up (for example, Torgo in the doorway "...you make me feel like dancin'...").  Who knows though, that could be part of the shtick in order to get the audience to laugh too, but I feel like they wouldn't laugh at the guys or the riff unless it was truly funny.

I'd love to go to a live event, or even watch it streamed live in a theater, but that happens nowhere near me ever.

Background listening to Rifftrax Live: Santa Claus.  So f'ing funny. :joy:
It's making Monday a lot easier!

Michelle, you don't have a theater near you that hosts FATHOM events? I can't believe we have like a dozen theaters in Cincy that do but you don't over in Humboldt. They don't advertise it well, usually you'll be lucky to find a flyer or small poster in the theater, but you can find them here: https://www.fathomevents.com/

Also, they always post events like that on Rifftrax's social media. Next one is in October, but you know, probably not with Corona and everything. But they're still scheduling them! https://www.fathomevents.com/events/rifftrax-live-amityville-4

PS: Holy moly, I did a quick search on a random zip code from Humboldt Co, and you're not lying. Apparently none within 200 miles. What's up with THAT?

    Right???????
I mean, it's beautiful here (if you don't look at the tweakers and empty storefronts in some places) but we're so isolated from so many good things.
