The Burn After Reading podcast

Good podcast. I will admit upfront that I still like the movie, but I understand where the guys are coming from.

Interestingly I put it in the same category as Blood Simple, which ARon also disliked. both are without "good" characters and are IMHO send-ups of the genre more than about plot.

When I first saw Blood Simple I thought "Wow, a noir thriller in which all of the standard characters are not very bright and fuck everything up!" Burn After Reading is a send-up of movies like Tinker,Taylor, Soldier, Spy. What if the main characters were not hyper-efficient secret agents with steel-trap minds? You know, normal people who are just good enough at their jobs to not get fired (until their problem drinking becomes an issue).

And this movie, as stated, is not set in the end-of-history uni-polar era of the 90s, not even in the everyone-is-out-to-get-us paranoia of the post-9/11 world but in the look-how-bad-the-Iraq-intelligence-was world of 2007-08 when it was reinforced to us how subject the intelligence agencies were to ideology, tunnel vision, pressure from higher-ups who wanted the assessments to come out just so, and a fair amount of cover-your-ass mentality.

Anyway, it hit my sense of humor just right. And by the way, the worst Cohen Brothers film is The Ladykillers. Unwatchable.

Great podcast! I love this movie but have become sadly resigned to most people not enjoying it. I think you guys hit the nail on the head with the Lebowski comparison. So much of the joke is that the tropes that get projected onto the genre aren't really present at all. Maybe Lebowski works better because it's not until the end that you realize there wasn't a kidnapping, the money was never stolen, and the whole investigation was a farce. Like imagine if we'd seen Jackie Treehorn drawing his porn character on the notepad before The Dude found it, and maybe that's the problem with Burn After Reading.

My vote for worst Coen Brothers movie goes to Hail Caesar. I'm convinced that you have to go into that movie with deep knowledge of and love for old Hollywood to get anything out of it.

There is nothing that could make me watch this movie twice. Even the guys doing a podcast. But it sounds like they also didn’t like it so may have to give them a listen.

i'm very much in agreement with J&A on this movie. i think for me, i was more than anything disappointed with this movie at the time cause i was really looking forward to it. it was the movie the Coen Brothers did after No Country (which i loved) and remember being super hyped when i saw the trailer and cast. then i watched and it just fell flat. J&A mentioned how well it did at the box office. i think it being the movie that followed No Country was a big reason behind that. people and critics that really liked No Country (like myself) couldn't wait for the next Coen Brothers movie and rushed out to theater to see it. now that i think of it i haven't really liked a Coen Brothers movie since No Country (i didn't mind Buster Scruggs but i didn't really like it). damn, it's been 14 years!

Wait...WHAT? I had to fact-check you and see if that was correct. I have a very specific memory of seeing that movie and it does not seem like 14 years ago. What a trip...but now I also really want to rewatch No Country. What a fantastic flick.
