  • Pens are gone . . . Rooting for a Canadian team now.
  • Wild game 7 started a little bit ago. Rooting for the wild but I think regardless who wins, that team will get taken out by the Avalanche. MacKinnon is stupid talented.

Must be something in the drinking water in Cole Harbour?

And I hope you are right, it's been a long 20 years since our last Cup.

    Also, fuck the NHL.

Why not Colorado?  MacKinnon is from the same town/suburb as Crosby!
  • Here are a few reasons . . .

    Read to the end!

this should spark quite the debate.

  • Tough loss, but I don't think anyone's beating a $100 million team.  Maybe the league will change some of the rules after Tampa repeats and LTIR wins the Conn Smythe.

okay - not THAT Canadian team.

I'm all in on MAF and the Golden Knights!!

The whole Tampa salary cap situation is BS, Carolina got screwed.

I figure this is worth a bump after an 8-0 blitz.  The math said Tampa would have to lose key guys after they won the cup.  Johnson was actively shopped and they weren't sure if Cirelli could be resigned.  Not only did they retain like 95% of their roster, they also added depth and got younger.  The guy with "season-ending" surgery avoided the cap and is now on a Gretzky-esque pace for playoff points.  I hope they go back to back and break all kinds of scoring records to fully illustrate how bonkers this thing is.

I guess there's still time to jump on the Habs bandwagon.

Predicting a repeat.  My team (Pittsburgh) doesn't make the playoffs.

  • Raise your hand if you just traded your Calder finalist goaltender, let core character guys walk, lost Dougie, and brought in DeAngelo.  I'm completely disgusted.
  • Wow... you come at the king, you best not miss.  Good luck, Mr. Bergevin.

I think Montreal will let him go.  We're deep at centre and $6.1 on a 1 year deal is crazy, because it means that after this year you'd have to offer him at least $6.1 to retain his RFA rights.  I think Montreal will pass, take the 1st and 3rd picks as compensation and maybe Carolina might have screwed themselves by either having to clear cap space for him next year or letting him walk....$6.1 million in cash and a 1st & 3rd pick is a steep price to pay for revenge.

Paquette didn't really do much for us, Staal is about done, and will Drouin actually play this year? Losing JK is definitely a stick in the eye and I don't think they're going to flip that (late) 1st round and 3rd round for Eichel.

I don't love the $6.1 million price tag, but it's one year and he'll be surrounded by more talent than he's ever seen.  Maybe Bergevin matches.  If it implodes for us, at least Kotkaniemi, Niederreiter, and Trochek are off the books in '22 and we can start over.  Get a deal done for Necas then ask Nick Suzuki if he'd like to play with his brother Ryan in Carolina. :p

Our centres would be Suzuki on the top line and the 3rd and 4th line would be two of Perreault, Paquette, Evans or Poehling.  That leaves 2nd line open.  KK was slotted to be given the chance to take that job, but it was seen as just that - a chance, it wasn't locked up.  When we signed Mike Hoffman, we did it knowing that he can play C so we had a couple of options if KK didn't work out on the second - either slot Hoffman in there or give Poehling the shot (the feeling within the organization is that there isn't a lot between KK and Poehling - he just doesn't have the experience yet and they'd rather he get those games played on the 3rd or 4th line.  Drouin is also a possibility, but they want to put as little pressure as possible on him, so unless he's completely got himself together I don't think that they'll ask him to do that.  The 1st rounder also opens up trade opportunities...we don't need to get an Eichel to replace KK who was questionable to begin with (I mean for this year as a 2nd line C, overall I like him a lot - especially his future potential), we just need "a guy" who can be a reliable 2nd line C and those guys are easily gettable for a 1st rounder, even a late 1st.  Monreal has had their eyes on Christian Dvorak for a while, I imagine the Coyotes would jump at Carolina's 1st for him.

We can put Shea Weber and/or Paul Byron on long-term injury reserve so cap space isn't an issue for us.  The real screw job is the fact that it's a 1-year deal and we'd have to qualify him at $6.1 million next year.  I think we sidestep that by letting him go and make that Carolina's problem.  I like KK a lot, but he isn't worth $6.1 million now and I don't think that he'll be worth $6.1 million next year either.

I honestly think that odds of Montreal matching are quite low - I'd personally be surprised if they did (but clearly, it isn't impossible).  If KK had already secured that 2nd line spot it would be a different story, but he really hasn't and we have too many other options to be forced into making a bad decision. I think the only way we match is if Montreal REALLY believes in his upside and think that can get him signed long-term to avoid that horrible qualifying next year.  So I think he'll either walk, or they'll match and almost immediately announce a long-term deal.

A bit of an update on this story...

It turns out that Montreal wasn't really happy about starting the season with KK as the second line C and had been shopping him around and Carolina was one of the teams that they'd spoken to.  The offer sheet came from the break-down in trade talks and wasn't just petty revenge (although clearly, sticking it to Montreal was part of it!).  I was also told that Carolina has discussed an extension with KK, so if Montreal lets him walk they won't have to qualify him at $6.1 next year.

Learning this, I think it's all but certain Montreal lets KK go.  If Montreal were shopping him, they weren't willing to invest in him and the only way it makes sense to match the $6.1 offer is if you're going to follow it up with a multiyear deal.  To me it would too strange for the Habs to go from shopping him to locking him up long-term.  I think they're using the 7 day period to see what the market is for Carolina's 1st pick and see if they could get whoever/whatever they wanted when they were shopping KK.

If they wanted to trade for him, then clearly they like what they see and he may factor in long term.  Like I said, this might make more sense after Nino and Trocheck are off the books in '22 and there's plenty of cap space.  My guess is he performs extremely well with the new roster and $6.1 million won't look as bad.  Aho, Kotkaniemi, Staal, and Necas are pretty damn good.  You take that over anything the Habs are throwing out.

I also read that Carolina can sign KK to an extension at a lower AAV closer to $4 million.  If that's true, I guess he's sticking around and I better learn how to spell his name. @CretanBull

  • Habs declined to match as predicted.
  • ...and Montreal traded for Christian Dvorak as I speculated above.

Coyotes may finally move, as they might be sold to the Rockets owner and moved to Houston.

There's no way anyone is home in St. Louis,  both the Cards and Blues are home and look to have full crowds.
