Just wanted to say in response to the questions raised on the Westworld Ep. 2 cast that I love the long podcasts, hope you guys don't change anything to make them shorter.
For real. Never once turned off a podcast because it was "too long." At the worst I might have to pick a stopping point and then finish it later, but that's a good thing.
i'm impressed we've so far avoided the sophomoric jokes with this post title.
to me longer is better and i think the amount of detail is great; the only time i bail on a podcast i find otherwise engaging is when it diverges from the subject and only sometimes then.
Hey, glad to hear it. It's what I figured, but I do get a bit self-conscious when stuff runs long out the gate with a new show and potential new audience. Thanks for the feedback. So far it's almost been universally pro-however long it takes.
Yeah, I personally tend to gravitate towards longer format shows, I only don't like them when they lack focus or repeat themselves or go off on tangents that aren't germane to the topic at hand. It's just hard to grade oneself on that score. Or, to be more precise, when I listen to our own product I tend to think "christ, what a blowhard" a lot, because listening to yourself, even five years on, is still a bit cringe inducing. I find I only really appreciate our podcasts outside of the humor that makes me laugh if I get a year or so of separation. Like, "hey, we're not as big an idiots as I'd assume!" A lot of times I go back and listen to the last few podcasts of the previous season in prep for a new one, and that feel comes up quite a bit. I guess that's good.
I only have a problem when the recap alone takes up 60% of the length. I mean, I just watched the show, I don't need to have what happened on the episode recited back to me scene for scene for an hour and a half. I'd love it if you could bang through the recap in 20 minutes and give us your thoughts/impressions/theories/analysis, talk about fan theories and read feedback for 2 hours.
@PS the recap itself is short, it's the thoughts/impressions of the recap that take 2 hours. Also, at least IMO it makes it easier to focus the discussion this way. Otherwise you'd be all over the place with no real direction also, feedback section tends to get longer as the show gets more popular and more people start sending things in.
100% agreed. The longer the better. When I saw 2 hours and 27 minutes of goodness flow across my timeline at 8pm I couldn't wait to dig in.
I always hear podcasts say they're trying to keep it at or under an hour, but I feel like that's almost doing your listeners a disservice. I'd rather you guys just talk about the episode until you can't talk anymore. If I cant listen in one sitting that just gives me something else to listen to on my commute.
I do listen to one podcast, Anna Faris is Unqualified, where they usually go over an hour and there are two distinct parts. The first part is an interview/role play/improv thing with their celebrity guest, and the second part is where they and their guest take relationship advice calls. They usually break these into two parts unless the whole thing is under an hour. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other but just wanted to throw that out there as an option if a lot of people complain about length.
Love this kind of improv. Comedy Bang Bang is amazing at it. Might check this out.
I listen to BM podcasts exclusively at work and I get nerd-wood when I see any new cast is over an hour. The Jim/Aron dynamic is such that any divergence from the focus is either humorous or tangentially related. I've yet to shut anything off due to boredom.
My take on it is that if the podcast is long, it's because it NEEDS to be long to have a proper recap and discussion of the episode. And since I listen to them when I'm out running, I'm totally on board with the 90+ minute episodes!
