Agreed. I read somewhere that this video was reversed and then spread around as fact, when actually she was frowning at first then smiled when he turned around to speak. I will say that I wouldn't put it past whomever to do that, but I most certainly wouldn't put it past Trump to treat her as a "be seen and not heard unless I tell you what to say" wife.

    Good Lord!
Reminds me of a Bill Hicks joke...if you play the tape in reverse, you see us helping Mr King to his feet and sending him on his way.

  • One thing that I wanted to make people more aware of. The new administration has blocked the National Institutes of Health from sending any correspondence to any public official at any level, even if it is to reply to questions. If they need to communicate anything to any public official at any level, every piece of correspondence must be approved by the Trump administration. I mean, if this isn't authoritarian, what is? Even a fucking senator now can't talk to the biggest agency related to health in this country without Trump approving of the replies.

And for the few Trump supporters who may doubt this, here's the full email sent to the NIH today:

    “Colleagues,

For your additional awareness, please note that we have been directed not to send any correspondence to public officials (to
include Members of Congress and state and local officials) between now
and February 3, unless specifically authorized by the Department. If you
or your staff have any questions about whether a letter should go
forward, please contact me or NIH Exec Sec.

     Thanks and best wishes,
    Larry Tabak”

So...I guess America was fun while it lasted? I'm hoping that the New England states will form a loose federation afterwards, and it's a given that California and Texas will be solo sovereign states, but what happens to the rest of them?

nope, it's not reversed or anything:  http://www.snopes.com/2017/01/23/melania-trump-frowning-inauguration/

that's not to say it means anything, though.

They hypocrisy of this thread is amazing. It was all fun and games to make fun of conservatives for talking about to leaving the country, succession, facism etc for 8 years during the Obama administration.

But the second there is a Republican president you become what you despised. That's the issue with the ultra left. Yeah Donald Trump is an unapologetic asshole and so are his supporters. However, they don't go around pretending to be this "woke" higher level human. Personally I'm a moderate Libertarian but if anyeone here is a die hard liberal you might want to tone down the hyperbole and maybe self reflect and realize that in order to live up to your ideals you might need to actually change who you are.

It was fantastic to see President Obama leave office, and be replaced with a huge improvement.

I honestly hope, as I am sure everyone does that the damage that has been done the authoritarian Obama  admin, can be repaired.

The issue isn't that a Republican is in office, it's Donald Trump. Being a liberal myself, I have not once claimed to be "leaving the country" if he was to be elected and have spoken out against people who say they will. Im here to fight. I've done self reflection and asked myself if I overlooked groups of people that were suffering during the prior admin and I admit I had. But I reject the notion that I need to change to accommodate Donald Trump when the vast majority of conservatives refused to have the same introspection during the Obama years and dug their heels in and opposed his every move.

    I don't fear Trump because he's a "republican" I fear him because he's a egotistical maniac.

Btw, being a Libertarian doesn't obsolve one of any political criticism. They're not the "correct" potiltical path to take. One may agree with the mainstream party issues that Libertarians claim, but it doesn't mean there isn't contradictions and holes to poke in their stances. I feel too often people tout being Libertarians as if they have the best of both parties, but there are serious deficits to the platform that is a true Libertarian-- just as there are with being a liberal or staunch conservative.

@Luke Seems like you're making a lot of assumptions. You're assuming that the folks on this thread calling attention to the authoritarian/fascist leanings of Trump a) made fun of conservatives for 8 years for what they said about Obama b) they are "ultra left" c) they are pretending to be a "woke" higher level human. You're also assuming that trump is a republican president, and that couldn't be further from the truth. There's not one person who is paying attention who will tell you that trump seems to have any loyalty or sense of obligation to the party he represents. Your scolding would make a lot more sense if Pence or Kasich were the president, but they are not.

Your point about introspection and thinking about how we treat the other side is a good one, and I will admit I've got some work to do in that area (as do you, I suspect) but this is not a normal president and these are not normal times. We went from a dorky left-of-center (not left enough for me, I'll even say) policy wonk president to a narcissistic orange rage monster who would destroy the entire country if it didn't give him the respect and love he "deserves." Cut everyone a little slack.

If we were dealing with 'normal' right v left dynamics, I'd give your point some consideration.  That is not the case.  This administration is being run by conspiracy theorists like those found in a Yahoo comment section.  New and dangerous territory.

@Luke You're making a false equivalency there. Accusations of fascism directed towards the Obama administration are pretty clearly untrue, whereas for Trump they are scarily accurate. Godwin's Law has ruined political discourse on the internet in a way; after so many years of people on the left and right calling anyone they didn't like a Nazi to try and win arguments, no one seems to take it seriously when actual Nazis come along. But make no mistake, Trump's administration is well on its way to being an authoritarian, fascist regime. That is not hyperbole - just look at everything that's happened not even a week in to his presidency. He isn't just "a new president that just happens to be Republican and these thin-skinned librulz can't handle it". He is much, much worse than that.

Additionally, you came in to what is, let's be honest, a venting thread for a pretty left-leaning community, called everyone hypocrites for daring to be upset with this shitty turn of events, and then got on your high horse for some "oh, look how bad both sides are, I'm so above it all" ranting. The only person I see here pretending to be a "woke, higher level human" is you, to be honest.

I think you'll find that you're on "woken, higher plain" with the moral compass directed by a document that has been soiled in intent over many generations.

Anyone who professes to love liberty but is okay with an individual as president who actively oppresses it needs to take a look at themselves just as much as any democrat/liberal/bleeding heart who thinks it makes more sense to abandon democracy and leave the country and the masses to it instead of fighting for it.  By the way, I also recognize that Obama wasn't perfect (far from it) and I understand why people appreciated Ron Paul even if they didn't agree with him.  Those two are very very different to Trump, though.

Also, perhaps the typical Christian right-wing does not think they are a higher "woke" being.  They just think that they, and everyone else in the country, should answer for their sins to one.

  • The only hypocrisy that I see is from all of the people on the right who cried about the tyrannical things that they imaged Obama might do (ie take away their guns) but have remained completely silent in the face of Trumps actual tyranny.

Where are all of those Constitution loving patriots now?  They need to stand up to what's happening now or admit that they don't give a rat's ass about the Constitution and are perfectly fine with tyranny as long as it's in line with their beliefs.

A lot of people have replied to this. But the big mistake you are making here is the equivalence between Obama and Trump.

Certain conservatives freaked out over Obama despite the fact that Obama is a standard democrat who only had a majority in both houses for 2 years. Liberals are freaking out over Trump because Trump is a complete extremist who has already taken several measures that are unprecedented and will likely have congress and senate on his side for 4 years. If liberals were freaking out over a standard Republican like Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney you'd have a point. But Trump in 5 days has prohibited federal agencies from communicating with public officials without his approval, has told blatant lies to the media, is in open breach of the constitution by continuing to own his business, and has just mandated that any scientific study by the EPA be reviewed by his political staff before release. He has also made it so that cities that do not collaborate with his deportation efforts will lose federal funding.

I mean, if you really are a libertarian, you more than anyone else should be freaking out right now. Hypocrisy is people who thought a speech for gun control, followed by no action whatsoever, was tyrannical but subjecting scientists to political review isn't.

Scientists who want to present their research will have to have it reviewed by Trump's political staff first.
  • The other issue in this Obama vs Trump complaint discussion (which I have seen everywhere) is that the attitudes and behaviors of the anti-Obama people vs the anti-Trump people are quite different. The anti-Obama people were downright scary, like I remember a long period at the beginning of his administration where anti-Obama people were showing up outside his rallies protesting while wearing visible guns and ammo. Meanwhile the anti-Trump folks are showing up wearing pink cat hats. The anti-Obama people were making stuff up left and right about how he was a Muslim, how he was not born in the US, and lots of worse, racist stuff. Whereas the anti-Trump people only really have to watch actual videos of actual statements and actions that Trump has done to get themselves riled up.

    Can confirm: am riled up

@Tom_g To me, the government censoring science is worse than the government going after religion. This will not stand!

I could see them fire the whole lot in the end.
