Legion on FX

@A_Ron_Hubbard ;    @Jim

Hey guys, any chance you are thinking of covering this show?  It's another Noah Hawley project starring Matthew Crawley and featuring Jean Smart and Simone from Fargo Season 2, as well as Aubrey Plaza.  It's been getting a lot of critical buzz, and I would love to hear you guys podcast it.

  • Me too would be cool to see them cover it. Starts on the 9th over here in the UK
  • Count me in. I'm definitely watching it and would love to have my favorite podcasters cover it.

    Yes please! This looks incredibly interesting! A full cast would be good or at least a Bald Move TV joint. Joanna Robinson was talking about it a few weeks ago and I've been very intrigued ever since.

  • I think this will be the first superhero show that will really break the mold and be remarkably great. The only superhero show I've liked so far was Daredevil season 1, and I honestly think this show will make Daredevil season 1 look like amateur hour. The show is definitely going to be out there, which is my favorite kind of show, but I dont think that everyone will like it. The Fox people have been very clear that this will not be a traditional X-men joint, and that it most likely will not be incorporated into the larger universe of movies, which I think is great. It really gives Noah Hawley and the writers a lot of room to play. I think that is the major problem with the Marvel tv shows, they try to tie them all to the same timeline and leave room to incorporate all the characters if they want to. It puts the writers into these tiny boxes without much room to maneuver. I think the general lack of a timeline in the X-men series is the only way to have the creativity to make new and interesting movies and shows.

    All the reviews I've read for it so far have been very positive and I'm super excited for it. I have a feeling it will be my new favorite show.
  • Try as I might to temper expectations I still can't wait for this to start next week. It looks like it could be very creative and interesting or a total disaster. No in between haha.

    I had also read that they're trying to downplay the comic book connections to the show. It seems a wise choice to focus on this one complex story.
    ..."very positive" you say? There go my wild expectations again!

    @ahauntedworld

    There aren't too many reviews out for it yet, honestly, but the few that are have all been positive, at least the ones that I have read have been.

    And Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair and the Storm of Spoilers podcast got to watch the first 3 episodes and she said she really loved it, which is kind of rare for her because she is the most nit-picky reviewer I know. I find her a bit annoying, but I do respect her opinions when it comes to TV. When she said on SoS that she really loved the first 3 episodes is when I started to get super excited for the show.

  • +1 in favor of covering this on the podcast. If not an official pod then at least on the Bald Move TV feed like The Young Pope.

  • Yeah cover it. What else are you guys even watching right now? I'm not watching Young Pope, you guys aren't covering Homeland.
  • So here's a little featurette about Legion. I was particularly intrigued by the quote from Noah Hawley that the show is not "meant to be an information delivery system but an experience delivery system". I definitely think that is an important thing to keep in mind when we finally get to watch the show, but it might be a turn off to some viewers.

    Dan Stevens blew me away in the movie The Guest, as did the whole movie (would certainly make for a great commission podcast). I'll definitely watch this and listen to the podcast.

    I wasn't going to say anything until we had it finalized, but now I can.  Jim, myself, and Jason from the Walking Dead 'Cast are going to jointly cover this as a Bald Move / Podcastica endeavor.  I believe the podcasts will release on Fridays. starting with this one.

    I've been hoping for a crossover ever since you talked about covering an episode of Fear TWD with him. Really pumped for the podcast and the show.
  • @A_Ron_Hubbard What will the name be so I can subscribe?

    Alright so I'm just going to say it...I thought the pilot was absolute dog shit. I thought the acting was bad, aside from Aubrey Plaza doing her thing. I thought they got too cute trying to fit a ton of information into the episode and I have no feel for what story this show is even trying to tell me. At times I felt like I was watching a 90s Syfy drama. Maybe I need to cool down but I had really high expectations for this show due to the marketing and previews and Noah Hawley being involved in it and the fist episode did not live up to the hype for me at all. I'm still looking forward to the crossover podcasts and hopefully the guys can bring me up a little but for some reason this just didn't land for me tonight. Help me out lol.

    Just got to the janes addiction part. Liking so far.
  • I'm not sure I'm ready for another "is this real" type of show, but at least they're having fun with it.  The visuals and energy were great and I got everything I wanted from a Noah Hawley episode.  No idea where the story goes, but I hope they can keep the head space consistent.  So far there's flashbacks, dead Lenny, slug man, memory projection, and the real world.  I like that they used 2:35:1 for the memory projections, but those things can get out of hand really fast.

    And Dan Stevens is MVP.  That dude can do anything.

    The X-Men, New Mutants, Chris Claremont, and Bill Sienkiewicz are near and dear to my heart, so I was worried when I first heard about this last year. I won't even see the movies because I think they are garbage. But I loved this. Even if it goes off the rails, the visuals, the style, music, and the feel of what it's like to be weird are enough to keep me interested.

  • Really enjoyed the pilot. I've really liked Dan Stevens since I saw him in Downtown Abbey, and I thought he was great in this. I can't imagine what this episode cost, but I'd be surprised if they can keep it up at the same level going forward. Really looking forward to the podcast!!
  • Interesting.  I read X-Men and some New Mutants back in the day, and I don't remember Legion at all.  Guess I wasn't very comprehensive.  Will have to check it out.

  • Enjoyed it :) listening to the podcast and yes skype and Skype recorders can be a bitch sometimes
  • @iMatty94  Uh oh!  Was something fucked up with the audio?  I didn't listen to the entire thing before posting it.

    Can't find it on iTunes
  • @Jim. The audio was fine, you just forgot to edit out Jason's Skype issues. There was about a minute of Aron talking with Jason saying "hello?" in the background.
  • @Jim & @A_Ron_Hubbard How come this isn't in the TV Firehose?
  • Jim said:

    No, no problem at all Jason cut out in the Skype, well he thought he did. It was more funny then oh they fucked up

  • Not able to find this episode or feed anywhere in itunes (for my podcast app). Searched as many keywords and combinations as possible.

    Never mind. Just saw on the facebook post comment that the itunes feed will be up in the next day or so.
  • Holy shit! I totally loved this. They used music honestly as well as I've ever seen it used. Perfect song and score choices in the perfect moments. I really loved the bit right after the body swap with the sort of Stranger Things vibe to the music, and the Happy Jack montage at the beginning was fuckin amazing. Not just with the look and feel, but with the music too there was some serious Wes Anderson channeling here and it was totally on point. Visually it had style packed in so tight it was just flying out of every orifice. It couldn't be contained! I loved the performances. I loved the feeling of disorientation. Action, humor, drama. Man, this had it all. I really hope they can maintain because I'm totally hooked. I literally shouted and clapped, knowing full well how stupid that is being in my living room with only my wife (who of course had nothing to do with making the show, and thus not being in a position to receive the praise of a round of applause and adjoining "hooting") to hear.
