I don't even know what to say in the face of "Facts alone won't convince people...." Whether its this, or climate change or whatever else it's a mountain of indisputable evidence being weighed against "yeah, but still" as if they're equal.
Have been doing a bit more reading on McCain since last week, and it is pretty impressive how much he's been working to try to maintain some critical foreign relationships, and I think that schedule did have an impact on his questions at the hearing (still think the substance of his questions was off-putting, despite the delivery). So while I still think he has stooped to partisan level politics quite a bit post-2008 while still trying to maintain his "maverick" image, I think he still deserves a lot of respect. Here his is on the state of American leadership:
“What do you think the message is? The message is that America doesn’t want to lead,” McCain said, while adding of the rest of the world: “They are not sure of American leadership, whether it be in Siberia or whether it be in Antarctica.”
Asked if America’s standing on the global stage was better under Barack Obama, McCain, a fervent critic of the previous administration’s foreign policy, responded: “As far as American leadership is concerned, yes.”
Meh that all seems like political grandstanding, it's silly but a lot of politicians like to be sucked up to in a public venue so I don't really care about that stuff anymore. If rumors that Trump actually wants to fire Mueller turn out to be true that's actually insane.
Ruddy was seen leaving the White House tonight shortly before that news broke, so if it's not an indication that he's going to fire, it's at least the message 45 wants to be sending right now. I can only imagine the epic shitstorm of leaks that is going to rain down on his orange ass if he goes through with it. It will be the end of his short presidency.
And in other news, Trump had his entire cabinet verbally fellate him in front of the press today. Yeesh. I'm not sure what the point of that was.
Totally off the wall behaviour. When the biggest and most constant criticism against you is that you're acting like a fascist - abusing your power, using your position in office to enrich yourself, attacking the media, pathologically lying while claiming that everything else is fake news etc. - maybe the worst thing that you can do is gather your cabinet and have them publicly praise you ala every dictator in the world.
that cabinet meeting stuff is hilarious and inconsequential but also kind of disturbing. those are some very successful people, some of whom are respected in their fields and/or who who have long (some very lucrative) careers behaving like lickspittle d-list celebrity contestants on the apprentice.

I really don't know what Trump was trying to pull here. Did he really think that it was a good idea, that it would send some sort of positive message to America? Or maybe is his ego so fragile that he actually needed to hear this stuff? Was it a power move to make his cabinet 'kiss the ring' so to speak?
Whatever his intention, it was a horrible decision to put this out there. At best it was a failed PR stunt, meant to show how things are positive in the White House, but ended up depicting him as a tin-pot "Dear Leader" dictator. More troublesome would be that he put his fragile ego on display for all to see or worse still that it was a terribly ill-advised display of his authority. Regardless of his intent, the bottom line is an absolutely humiliated cabinet who will do down in history as the lapdogs who insisted that the Emperor's new clothes looked great on him.
And the biggest problem (probably related to my last point) he doesn't have anyone around him willing to tell him how awful this is...at least not anyone he's willing to listen to.
Funny how she seems to get interrupted the most by her colleagues when during her time for questioning (it's happened at multiple hearings now). I wonder why that is ...

Are you kidding? she would lose a statewide election in about 40 states, she couldn't win a single state Trump won.
in fact she would push WI, PA, and MI further right, and probably slide NH, MN, and ME into the Red column.
just go run in the rust belt on confiscating guns, allowing sanctuary cities (which is a losing issue when polled in California) and shielding illegal alien criminals from deportation.
just put the Bologna family in front of a camera and she's not getting elected anywhere outside of CA.
So I would like to make my endorsement for her nomination for the democratic party.

Now I am playing with how California could peacefully secede from the rest of y'all. You are all free to come along - we have great Mexican food, beautiful oceans and a lingering feeling of superiority...

Interestingly enough, the leader of the Calexit movement recently defected to Russia. I'm sure it's completely unrelated to anything else Russia-related in the news right now.

Yea that would be like some young first term liberal black senator talking about white rural Americans "clinging to their guns and religion" and was a community organizer (*cough* communist *cough*) and palled around with terrorists and went to a church with a Reverend who hated white people ... and then went on to win PA-OH-MI-WI two elections in a row. Never gonna happen.

How many people would have predicted that a Black man called Barack Hussein Obama would become president when he was in his first year in the senate? How many people would have predicted that Donald Trump would be the next president back in 2013?
With the current approval ratings, the real election in 2020 will be the democratic primary.
"i'm not going to answer Yes or No if at all possible cause I don't want to get caught when something comes out later" , I mean, "I don't recall" seems to be the theme of the evening.
I also don't quite understand that one can in advance, enjoy executive privilege that may not be invoked by the president, but yet you aren't invoking executive privilege. Does this mean that the Intelligence committee can review the transcripts and for every time that Sessions did the non invoke invoke, compel him to ask the President whether he can, in fact answer each or any of these questions and come back? Senator King I believe did the best job of showing how that was entirely bullshit. Not that it seems to matter. And this guy is the top law enforcement officer in the nation. Jesus.
Oh... we certainly must not rush him, it gets him all nervous. Poor guy, he got beat up by a girl...
However I was cheering when he told off Ron Wyden. What Sessions should've done is tell Wyden to start telling the truth about his residence in New York while he "represents" Oregon. Like when Wyden just totally unprofessionally and in an matter unbecoming a sitting senator goes "oh that doesn't pass the smell test" in regards to his recommendation to fire Comey violating his recusal, Sessions should've gone "well you know what else doesn't pass the smell test, your 'representation' of Oregon" that would've been burn level epic, but Sessions actually respects the institution of the senate, unlike key members of the democrats in the senate

Sorry, but Trump supporters have completely surrendered their right to comment on the professionalism and what is or isn't becoming of an elected official.

Surrendered? Like what in a treaty?
The Senate is supposed to possess a level of decorum above other offices. The house and the presidency are different because the senate is supposed to be a deliberative body. If you've ever testified on legislation before legislative bodies you would know senates possess a higher level of decorum and a softer atmosphere then houses of reps

It's nonsense to suggest that members of the Senate are meant to be held to a higher standard than the President, and if you're ok with the Pussy-Grabber in chief you lose your right to be critical of other elected officials for not living up to the esteem of their office.
If simply saying "oh that doesn't pass the smell test" was a bridge too far for you, you must have lost your mind when Sen Cotton made a mockery of the entire proceeding, right?
Well I should add that apparently Senator HArris was acting Hysterical. Widen wasn't, King wasn't. Just Harris. Oh people need to understand what words mean, and their history. And what is McCain's precise role there in that he can cut into another senators time? He's even there ex officio, meaning he's not a voting member. I do give Burr some cred for stating 'let the chair officiate the meeting senator' or some such.
Exactly. Sessions was rambling on and when it was clear he was avoiding the specific (simple) question she tried to move on or ask in a different way. She only has a few minutes too question him and he was just running out the clock with his aw shucks slow southern drawl.
As you point out other Dem senators did the same thing, but apparently that is ok in terms of Senate decorum as long as you're an old white dude; if you're a black woman speaking forcibly then you're being "hysterical."
Fuck. Shooting at Republican Congressional baseball practice in Arlington. One congressmen shot, not life threatening. Unclear on other victims at this point, sounds like at least 4 others taken to the hospital.

Because this is apparently still a issue we have to deal with.
