Battlestar Galactica Commission

Just wanted to see what level of interest there is in finally buying out the BSG Commisioned Podcast? I have bought a few shares and would like to get this one on the schedule as I love the show (just rewatched the whole series)!!! The pilot movie would be a good one to do or maybe the first couple of episodes in Season 3 on New Caprica. Thoughts?

    Where can you watch BSG?

You have to buy it on Amazon/iTunes/GooglePlay .. it was removed from Netflix a while ago and hasn't been on any streaming service since. Boo.

    From the shop:
"Jim and A.Ron’s take:  A.Ron has seen season one, and did not enjoy the experience, though is a really big fan of the board game.  Jim has seen the entire series, and is mostly a fan. Keep this in mind when funding the project and setting your expectations."

With that in mind I'd recommend something A.Ron hasn't seen. It's been so long since I've watched it, I'd have to do some research to come up with what 3-episode stretch would be ideal. Also, I think the miniseries might be technically too long (3 hrs) for a commissioned 'cast. Here's a cool chart that plots out all the episodes' IMDB ratings, which could be informative in choosing:

That said, we had a similar "strategy" in choosing episodes for the Lost podcast, so I'm interested to see how that turns out before considering funding this one. Should be coming out this week.

I think it is on Hulu.

Yup. All episodes are available on Hulu. I recently rewatched it and man it still holds up.

  • @trippy Yup.  We just watched the 3 episodes for the LOST commission and I'll reiterate that I think commissioning a podcast based on three episodes of a 121 episode series is a really bad idea.

Well Lost, BSG, Xfiles and pretty much any series that tries to pass off the idea that there is this huge mythology behind everything and that all will be revealed usually don't hold up to rewatching IMO because so much of the drama of the show involved the mystery and even more importantly being able to be part of the online discussion when the show first aired.

Then again I'm still really pissed about how Lost ended so hearing Jim and A.Ron shit on the show might be pretty entertaining.

    lol that bad huh!
  • We haven't recorded the podcast yet so who knows but A.Ron stopped watching after season 2 and I haven't seen the show in a decade and also didn't watch the final season.
  • I'm seriously debating forking out for the remaining $240 for BSG if anyone will want to get in on some of this action and have the guys review episodes you liked. I already have 3 or 4 shares of the show and I love it enough to do the remainder.

I'm not sure a BSG cast is a good idea. @A_Ron_Hubbard has been pretty vocal on other casts about not liking the show, and especially not liking the Roslin character. Not being invested in Roslin is a HUGE sign that you're not going to enjoy this show; so much of the plot hinges on her and her relationship with both Adamas. While it's always fun to hear a good A-Ron takedown of subpar material, I wouldn't want to commission that fate for one of my favorite shows.

That's exactly the reason to commission the podcast. I bought a share in the hopes it got commission so my BSG fanboy-ass can send some serious hate to their inboxes and shit talk their coverage on the forums.

    Thanks for the comission.
About 33 minutes, it is implied that they take shifts, at least Adama and Tey, I assume the pilots do the same. They have more pilots than vipers in the air that episode. Soldiers in war are supposed to get sleep whenever they find it, it would still be tight and wear them down but I don't think it's that implausible since you only need to calculate the next jump and hold off the Ceylons long enough, the first few days probably without much direct contact It gets only closer when single ships of the civilian fleet start to break down.
The olympic carrier could have been handled better I agree, either show some people or don't get that close at all and if they detect some radiation it should be ambiguous if it's nukes or a leak in the engine.

  • I watched this, and enjoyed it, but it's a show with serious problems IMO, especially in the later seasons, the special effects looked bad at the time and will look even worse now, and I think generally will not hold up over time. It also went off the air almost a decade ago at this point. I kind of feel like basically everything that can be said about this show has been said, and since I honestly believe we're in a golden age of TV format shows (cause what do you call netflix originals? Hulu originals? Etc), I'd rather they stick with new stuff. Can we get a The Dark podcast, for instance?

Obviously the above is all opinion. Not trying to say you're wrong for wanting a BSG podcast. Just explaining why I wouldn't.

Pay for The Dark and they will eventually cover a few episodes. The Dark also came out after this was commissioned. This was a commissioned podcast, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I thought the "coup" situation where Adama backed down was absurd. I mean I've read a lot into some of the Coups in Latin America like in Augusto Pinochet in Chile and Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay which had substantial support amongst the populations of those countries because the economic and social situation had so deteorated, I can imagine a scenario where Adama throws Roslyn out of the airlock on live TV in the fleet and takes command to applause. I mean if people will support a military coup due to a bad economy imagine if it's the complete survival of the human race?

And I think, I like the discussion about Boomer and if she was created as an adult cylon, she would had to have been planted as a child or switched with somebody who looked similar as an adult, I can't imagine a military organization in a society as advanced as the colonies commissioning her as an officer and training her to be a pilot and hold a security clearance without a background investigation, like in the US Air Force they will check your school records, call your friends, relatives, check for criminal history, etc so I can't see how they would just create a black adult cylon and send her to the recruiters office because even if they faked documents a simple phone call to verify them would blow the cover.

  • On the Trial of Baltar point, he wasn’t put on trial for surrendering to the cylons.   But rather for signing the execution order for Roslyn and all the others.    He was acquitted cuz he signed it at literal gunpoint.
  • Also, while i typically love your podcasts, this one was not for me.  I chose to heed ARon’s suggestion and stopped listening halfway before the nitpicking got too bad.   As i listened i found myself asking Why do a podcast on a show when one half to the duo disliked it so much he stopped watching after season 1?   I mean, come on guys, that’s like a diss to the Battlestar fans out there.
Appreciate the effort though guys.  Peace

  • I'm just at the point in the podcast where the guys are talking about the Olympic Carrier being empty in '33' and I seem to remember from the DVD commentary (its been almost 10 years) that the network forced them to shoot it without people visible as it was too dark but the producers knew it reduced the intended impact and were disappointed..

I mean they should’ve altered the script at that point. The people watching may be put off by such an absurd scenario and never watch the DVD commentary later.

That would be a big difference. I can't believe they thought that was a good change. Would have probably have made the episode one I overall liked rather than overall disliked.

My favorite podcasts are when one of the two loved it and the other didn’t. Actually. It makes for a better episode

The interpretation I'm most familiar with is that "Head Six" and "Head Baltar" were Angels (do they not basically say as much at the end?) and (post disappearance) Starbuck probably was some form of one as well.

Kara Thrace was definitely NOT a Cylon IMO.

  • I was hoping Jim would talk a little about the wonderful performance from Richard Hatch as Tom Zyrek. This was the performance that got me hooked and I found out afterwards that Hatch was the Star Of the original series. Going back and watching the first episode (or miniseries) I’m remembering all the random background characters who would become more fleshed out, like Gata, the presidents aide Billy, and the media guy in the blue suit. Now I’ve decised to do a fulll rewatch of the series. I only wish that one day A.ron gives the series a real try.

I don't see them as angels but a different life form like time lords / cosmic gardeners on a different plane of existence whose prime directive is a little different than startrek. :-)
I believe that when Starbuck went literally all in in maelstrom she died and one of those beeings decided to incarnate without (conscious) memories in the flesh to set the new civilisation on the right path. Because of that I was ok with her departure.
I want to second to listen to the commentary track, especially the maelstrom episode with leoben.
The score I still listen to till this day, shape of things to come is one of my all time favourites.
My favourite character is Baltar, I loved his last scene with six where he came full circle in an amazing scene.

    P.S:
Aaron complained that Boomer shot Adama as a cliffhanger so he didn't continue to watch. It is made clear later in the series that she as well as other cylons are (unconsciously) conflicted because of their individual experiences in human societies which leads to a schism in the Cylon society later.

  • So glad you all commissioned this! It re-ignited some fun discussions at home. Also, I had forgotten how much of a sci-fi tv nerd I was as a teenager until the moment they dropped a line about other shows like Andromeda and Earth 2 etc., and I thought, “oh my god, I watched every single sci-fi show that was on for a good ten years.”

Sorry its not Battlestar related, but I really enjoy Gold Rush as far as reality TV goes.
