The double tap is a fair point, but did Daryl even know what beta looked like at that point? Beta was not at the hilltop confrontation in the previous episode.

So.... in the final scene of the episode, a group of about twenty Whisperers shows up at the gate. They seem to be armed with knives.

The Hilltop community has superior numbers and superior weapons (crossbows, bows and arrows, spears, horses, etc.). What would stop them from just taking out this threat right here, right now?

Okay, Alpha has a shotgun. But still....

It was one dog at that point, running toward the door where the walker is pushed into the corridor. In a horror universe like this, the dog's death didn't seem unreasonable. It wasn't Dog, after all.
