Executing Lee, who was idolized by his troops and the South, would have created chaos and many in the Confederate armies would prob have fought to the death instead of surrendering. Lincoln wanted the South to be welcomed back into the United States with no punishment so the nation would heal...its the historical irony that he wanted a peaceful surrender and reconstruction but his death led to the government imposing harsh sanctions on the Confederate states that took decades to come back from. Also, after the War, Lee was not executed or imprisoned as a traitor. He went back to VA. and became the president of then Washington University. It was later renamed the Washington and Lee University.
At the time, I can see why that decision was made...but in historical retrospect it was probably a mistake.
I used to be a civil war reenactor and have spoken to many Northern reenactors who never looked on the South as traitors. The South saw themselves as doing the same thing that the colonies did to England, declaring independence to protect their rights and way of life. Yes, slavery was/is evil and was part of the reason they seceded from the Union. But it was also an argument over states rights and not wanting to give full control over to a federal govt (they looked at a president in Washington like a monarch in England)
9 out of 10 Confederate soldiers didn't even own slaves and when asked why they fought they would often say that they weren't fighting to for rich plantation owners to keep slaves...they were fighting to protect their rights.
Personally I think all these arguments over marble and bronze statues is dumb. If people want to add content/context to these memorials so future generations can understand better the war, slavery and what happened then that is better than completely removing these statues and memorials.
Also, some people are now asking for statues of Presidents who owned slaves to be removed (http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/13/us/kentucky-confederate-monuments/index.html) which seems even more dumb since we would need to removed any monument to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ulysses S Grant and 9 other presidents....as well as removing them from all US currency. Wouldn't it be better to have a conversation and have people be informed that trying to wipe out a part of our history?
