I agree, it answered a lot of questions, that we didn't need answering, and takes away from the sharpness of the show.

You didn't need to know that there were others out there, and that they can have different powers? You didn't need to know Eleven's origin? You didn't need proof that Terry Ives was right about having a baby that was taken away?

It wasn't the best episode of the season, but it doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting on the internet. It did so much to answer old questions and present new ones. Eleven meets Momma and deciphers her weird gibberish, learns her own origin, and gets info to find Kali. Eleven sees all the files on the similar missing persons cases which reinforces the idea that there are more test subjects. We get the explanation of Kali's different powers. El gets a power boost and some anger fuel from Kali.  Dr. Brenner might still be alive.  All this, plus actually leaving Hawkins, which is almost never done. You can't have a world-ending threat level and stay in a town made up of 90% pumpkin patches.

If the argument is that "It could have been spread out more", then that's a fine opinion. I disagree personally because it happened while the rest of the crew was in danger. It heightened the suspense. I feel that sprinkling this story in the other episodes could have detracted from the other character arcs. That's just me though.   :)
