  • My Star Wars Re-Watch...Please, Join in!

I rewatched IV and I with my kids, to get their takes. They loved them both, but are still waiting for BB-8 to show up. My own perspective on IV is largely unchanged. Lots of action, good world-building, lots of mystery. Some questionable things here and there, but the pacing of the movie is tight enough to keep it moving.

The Phantom Menace - Oh boy. It was worse than I remember. I'm not even trying to apply the adult lens that people are using on the new trilogy...I was trying to appreciate it from a kid's perspective. I tried to narrate the opening crawl. Don't every let anyone sell you the lie that this was written for kids. "The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute." Trying explaining that to a 5-8 year old. The first half of the movie, they were confused on who was a good guy and a bad guy. There are huge lulls in the movie. They loved the pod racing, but there is a lot of talking right before and right after those scenes. They watched a New Hope and had a few questions. They were constantly asking questions during Episode I. I couldn't really explain the Senate scenes easily. I still have no appropriate non-spoiler answer for "Where is Darth Vader?"

I do love the Darth Maul stuff. The end fight is by far my favorite lightsaber battle. I think there should be a fan cut of this movie that 1) eliminates most of Jar Jar's nonsense, 2) cuts down some of the trade talk, and 3) strips out 90% of Anakin's lines and makes it appear as if R2 is flying the ship alone in the final battle.

  • Star Wars Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker *SPOILER DISCUSSION*

@CretanBull - Following the thread with @jaimeT, it seems like that takes away the agency of the characters. I thought the point (as others had put it) is that Ren chose to be evil (by killing Han) as opposed to being corrupted by Snoke. In any case, I still think Luke's illusion deactivates his saber (even though.he'd be safe), mirroring Obi-Wan's last act. Kylo tries to kill him much like Vader kills Obi-Wan. If anything, the end result is the same, but the agency is different.

I agree that JJ undid some of the prequels and TLJ, but I think RJ tried to undo TFA. So balance there, I guess!!!

"She wasn't an amazing character in TLJ granted but she wasn't just another bum either." - @Aww_PHuuCk

    Let the past die!!

No, seriously, I see what you're saying. I just feel like she's not an asset in a fight and has no other function. If they had her on the Falcon to fix the ship, okay. Threepio and BB-8 had value. The characters you named have value in the fight...one even provided the "horses" for the ground assault. They didn't bring Dominic Monaghan along either bc no one needs a Hobbit in a Jedi assault!!

edit: that was tongue in cheek, but I prob shouldn't have bc of the racism underlying some (but not all) complaints about Rose. I just think she was a weak link anyway and not someone to lose sleep over.

Welp, at least Chewie got his medal.

All it took was for Luke, Han, and Leia to die.
Chewie should have tossed the medal over his shoulder.
